[opensuse] Start http at boot time

Hi there, I have a problem with the initialization at boot time of my http daemon. I put on the: /etc/init.d/rc5.d/S10httpd -> /opt/http-2.2.4/bin/apachectl The S10httpd is dinamically link to the apachectl. The problem is that it doesn't start the http daemon when I do a restart of the Linux box. Any help would be apretiated. [opensuse] Partition Resizing

I've been running OpenSuse 10.1 and subsequently 10.2 on a dual boot machine for some time now quite successfully. I'd like to ditch the Windows partition(s) altogether given that it hasn't been used for over 6 months and I can do everything I need to on OpenSuse. Is it possible to simply remove the Window partitions and reallocate to OpenSuse? Partition info: /dev/hda Disk 37.2G /dev/hda1 HPFS/NTFS 35G 18G 18G 50% /windows/C /dev/hdb Disk 74.5G /dev/hdb1 HPFS/NTFS 29G 25G 3.5G 88% /windows/D /dev/hdb2 Extended 33.3G /dev/hdb6 Linux Native 13G 8.6G 4.2G 68% / /dev/hdb7 Linux Native 19G 17G 2.3G 89% /home Ideally I would like to reallocate /dev/hdb1 to /dev/hdb2 then /dev/hdb7 Is this possible to do without loosing my / and /home data and if so which would be the most suitable tool. The Yast2 partition tool will not for example allow me to edit /dev/hdb2.

Not sure if that would help really. Have you >tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it? I don't see KNetworkManager as a selection in the drop down menu as a command. How do I uninstall the driver? I know how to install it. [opensuse] Problem with CD Creator

Hi all, Well, I've revisited my auto-install CD and I'm having more difficulties. I've created a control file using the auto install tool in yast2. I've configured a local installation source. Now I'm trying to use the CD Creator tool to create a disk image. Once I get through all of the configuration choices, (install source, profile, etc.) I get a screen entitled "Saving CD Creator Configuration." Followed by "=> Write the settings" as the progress indication. Then I get a box that says: Errror Error while writing settings. Once again, the error message is worthless and there doesn't seem to be a log file to be had anywhere... Any ideas about how to proceede? This is getting very frustrating! Although it has bee working like a charm for the past few months, a couple of days ago it could no longer see wireless networks. The Power LED is lit on the card, however the Link LED doesn't flicker periodically as though there is no TCP traffic or even a 'heart beat' flicker. 'ifconfig shows the MAC address of the card and ndiswrapper -l shows, 'lstinds driver present, hardware present'. Any ideas on how I can fix this? [opensuse] Adventures with pam_tally

Folks: For some reason pam_tally is turning into more of a bear that I thought - One SLES10 I added the following two lines to the beginning of /etc/pam.d/sshd: auth required pam_tally.so onerr=fail no_magic_root account required pam_tally.so deny=3 no_magic_root unlock_time=90 reset all else remained the same.............(file at bottom of post) Anyway when I test it out with faillog it records the attempts but doesn't block after 3 tries. You can try a dozen time but when you put in the right password it still logs you in! All I want it to do is lock the account after 3 attempts and I can't figure out how - Know this list is about OpenSuse but I need help - it will be appreciated! [opensuse] USB stick not mounted with "sync" option

Hi all, in OpenSUSE 10.1, my removable USB flash memory would be mounted by the hotplug subsystem with the sync option so I could yank it if it weren't flashing. However now that I've gone to 10.2, all my systems mount it without the sync option and I have experienced data loss without realising this. A workaround is to run "sync" as root before yanking, or unmount. Is this a bug or a deliberate change? How can I configure my preferred behaviour? There may be some developers out there who wore tye-dye t-shirts, travel in Winnebago vans, and had a taste for the tree, but there were just as many buttoned up developers that have never listened to the Grateful Dead once. And I love this line from that article: Hilf said that the Linux phenomenon had nothing to do with Linux, but rather it had a lot to do with Apache, MySQL and PHP. I just checked out IT guy setting up routes and firewall rules on its Win2003 servers - really have come a long way - nice GUI with click, dropdown of machines/people/groups (ala ActiveDir). Dont get me wrong, I never touch the stuff, but its getting really difficult to argue Linux firewall, routing, print and file servers to the Win IT guy - there is just not anything (that I know of) that comes close to the ease of use (setting up routes and firewall rules especially). Can someone point me to something? At the moment all ammo I have is that Win is expensive and locks you into the Win platform (which is a point at out shop, seeing everything is already win based). [opensuse] ndiswrapper Help Appreciated

I'm fairly new to Linux, but not quite a total novice. I've set up a little Linux machine for my wife, using ndiswrapper to install a LinkSys wireless NIC. I had very little trouble with that, and her machine connects to our network without a problem. However, trying to do the same for my Toshiba Satellite P-35 laptop has turned out to be quite an adventure. Although ndiswrapper confirms that the driver has been installed correctly, and that the right hardware is present, I haven't been able to connect to our WAP at all. The NetworkManager icon (SuSE 10.2) just continues saying "no connection." If it's simply impossible to use ndiswrapper with this Atheros wireless card, it would save me a lot of trouble to know that. On the other hand, if anyone here has actually gotten one of these set up and working, I'd sure like to have a chat with you! [opensuse] Install SuSE 102 along side 10.1 - What happens?

Hello: I'm writing in an attempt to understand how the SuSE installer will accommodate my existing installation. Background: (1) I have SuSE 10.1 successfully installed. (2) I have three hard drives connected: - /dev/sda : the "main" hard drive with SuSE 10.1 and swap - /dev/sdb : a new drive that is blank - /dev/sdc : data (3) I want to leave my SuSE 10.1 intact (untouched) on sda and want to install SuSE 10.2 on sdb. OK, the easy part. I can boot from the SuSE 10.2 DVD and install on sdb. This should be a piece of cake. Presumably an install of SuSE 10.2 on sdb will not touch sda or sdc. Now, the question -- what happens to the boot sequence?? For my setup today (if I understand this properly), I'll boot from sda. Upon boot the master boot record (MBR) will be read from sda and will launch grub on /dev/sda2/boot. The menu.lst file will define the "presets" and default that I have. What happens when I install SuSE 10.2 on sdb? - Will the machine still load the MBR from sda? [I think this is a hardware/BIOS issue?] - Will the machine still load grub from /dev/sda2/boot? - What will happen to my existing menu.lst file? Will it be overwritten (to only contain a 10.2 option) or will it be modified/appended (10.1 and 10.2 options)? The bottom line is that I don't much care, but I do want the option to boot into my working/existing 10.1 versus my experimental 10.2 setup. Will the install program handle this for me? Will I need to make some manual configuration changes after the SuSE 10.2 install? Thank you. Hello SuSE people, Not really a SuSE question but IS a part of my OS. My wife loves Pysol. However, while it is playing it makes god-awful buzzing sound while it is running. It surely is that I have not installed Pysol-sound-server, not that I haven't tried by compiling the tar package. Anyway, I don't care about Pysol playing music/sounds while it is running. She prefers classical streaming music from the web using Amarok anyway. So, the question is: Can anyone tell me how to disable sound in Pysol? I've been following the thread about interfacing with a mail program (specifically Eudora). So I went over to Eudora and looked up Penelope. http://wiki.mozilla.org/Penelope I'm rather dense, so I can't exactly understand what in the world are they planning to do. They say they don't want to compete with Thunderbird; they just want to "compliment" it. What exactly does that mean? Is Thunderbird going to end up looking more like Eudora? I made the system to boot with first CD and tried to select nfs type of installation,but it showed "network driver not loaded, please load n/w driver and proceed" , But I am not sure which driver its not able to load. its already loaded e100, eepro100 , even its not installing...........Can any body help me out. [opensuse] 32-bit vs 64-bit

I've been reading with interest the recent threads about 64-bit installations. I'm in the process of building a new computer, strictly to play with Linux on something other than a clapped-out old beater. (All the parts will arrive tomorrow from NewEgg.com, so today seems a little like Christmas eve to me.) It's not needed for work, or any other purpose other than having fun and learning more about Linux. (I work all day writing commercial Windows business software.) I'll be using an Athlon dual-core 64-bit chip, 2 GB of dual-channel RAM, and at least until the recent conversations, I had been planning on installing the current "stable" 64-bit OpenSuSE distro. Given the circumstances I've described, would that (a) be a worthwhile learning experience, (b) appear no different than a 32-bit installation, (c) be nothing but trouble, or (d) something else? If (a), I'm looking forward to using my first ever 64-bit computer. Otherwise, I'll just install the 32-bit distro, and continue my Linux education on that. Thanks in advance for your comments. Hi. I have a blown Nvidia FX5200 card on my openSuSE 10.2 install. The computer is set up to use Nvidia per the info found in opensuse. I put in another graohics card marked: MVGA-NVTNT2MAL 16MB Even if I think, that the letters can indicate that it's also an Nividia card, the 10.2 cannot start up the x-server.
