[opensuse] network manager & vpn & vpn client (a bit long, as I'm confused)

Using SLED10, there is a nice-looking option in the network manager, a left click on the icon in the panel, and there is a "VPN Connections" option, you can configure vpn definitions, and then launch those that have been configured. If you choose to configure, there is a nice little wizard, and there is a choice to import a cisco PCF file. Awesome. But ... so far, I have not been able to get it to work. I constantly get the message: "could not start the vpn connection to "profile name" due to a connection error. Could not contact the VPN server" Hmm .. I know the "vpn server" is accessible, and I can connect to it using a cisco client. So, I went looking through the "Novell VPN Client for Linux" documentation. It describes a totally different VPN gui. It does not seem to have the nice little wizard, and does not reference specifically cisco compatible vpn connectivity, etc. Plus the "profile" that I had created in the network manager client, does not appear here. So ... are these two seperate VPN clients? Are they supposed to work together? The only documentation I can find about the network manager option is about a 1-paragraph description (ie not helpful). I would love for this to work, so that we do not have to install a cisco client. Anyone know the secret of the network manager vpn? Or how it relates to the "novell VPN client for Linux"? [opensuse] 10.2 drops USB nic after 3-min - wusb54g-v4

Hello Family, Well my wireless (usb) Linksys wusb54g, with the "ralink" chip, keeps getting dropped, meaning the link-light goes out, power light goes out, zilch... I reinstalled 9.3 - 10.0 - 10.1 and now back to 10.2 and I was convinced it was the USB unit itself till I rebooted into FreeBSD-6.2 and Win-2000. This laptop is triple booted so cross-testing is fairly accurate. It's been up for three(3) days now on FreeBSD-6.2 and the same when booted into Win-2k. My question is that I thought whether a (usb) NIC is supported or not, the power && link lights normally lite up, then it's time for the driver stuff... So, what on Earth would cause SuSE-10.2 to not only drop the connection but turn "OFF" the device too leaving me with "NO" power nor link light?. Is there some USB subsystem configuration files that are adjustable? [opensuse] problem with webcam labtec and kernel 2.6.18.2-34 x86_64

Hi Recently I`ve changed computer and have problem with webcam. [opensuse] Maximum tar file size

I need a simple system for regular backups. The easiest would be to make one big tar file out of my home directory and copy it to an external disk via scp. But is there a max size limit for tar files? Can I trust tar and make one big tar file, e.g. 25 GB of my entire home directory? [opensuse] Desktops and program behaviour

Hi all, I use OpenSUSE 10.1. Installed is also Firefox 2. I use several Desktops to organise my work environment. When I use a program like Evolution and click on a link that requires Firefox to open something, it opens the last Firefox I used. If i change my Desktop to another one, Firefox opens in the previous Desktop, which can be a nag, because I now have to search the Desktops to find the opened link. How can I ensure that only the present Desktop is used when opening a link, even if it means starting a new Firefox session. I do not want to disturb the other sessions on the other Desktops. Sorry for the non-threaded response, new spam filtering on the server and well, things didn't go well... :( I tried copying the info from the kmailrc file over to the new system, but it never took. Regardless of if I use the 'query tool' (which I assume you mean the 'Check What the Server Supports' command....It still comes back with the fact that it cannot connect. Fajar- Firewall is not running on the system I am trying to configure to read mail. Firewall is only running on my firewall/router system :) As far as pop3... I don't like pop and haven't used that since like 1997. I know there's the whole 'leave the mail on the server' thing, but that's not what I want to do. I need to be able to check ALL mail (included messages moved to sub folders) from several locations: office, laptop, and via the web. Now just for experiment sake, I added a new account as a pop3 and well...it sort worked. I get a "server certificate authenticity test failed" message. I accept and my mail shows up in a subfolder. This was a Plesk setup on the server, but it's no longer in use. I do not get this message when trying to add/check mail for the imap account. I think that is where my issue is. I'm trying to setup a simple ipsec tunnel between two 10.2 boxes and I'm running into problems. If I look at /var/log/messages I can see that my tunnel has been established. [opensuse] Wireless Card

Hi all, I have recently installed OpenSuse 10.2 and as I expected I have problem with my wireless card, however OpenSuse has act more efficient than Ubuntu so far. It actually detects my card but I can not connect to my wireless network. I use a HP Pavilion laptop which has a built-in wireless card. It also has a light which will be on if the card is active. This light is always off on OpenSuse. So I decided to install the Windows drivers using ndiswrapper, but it needs the kernel source. In OpenSuse the kernel folder exists but there is no include folder in it which is needed by ndiswrapper. Can anybody help? Hi Does anyone on the list Distro OpenSuSE, Apache2 and use cgi and not perl cgi. Know a good mailing list to create cgi script without perl. I have a task to pull data from our iptables file into a editable html thus able to make modifications and click on a button to restart iptables. I have got a dirty hack that restarts the iptables But my boss would like a editable html form. PS I have been looking at open function But having no joy. # now write (append) to the file open(INF,"firewall"); # opens firewall file for reading located in the cgi-bin dir. Hi all, an update: as promised, I kept searching and... I buied a Linux journal with an OpenSuse DVD. This time, that worked! I again cannot understand what changed; the only reason I can see is the different media type. How can I make sure about the new DVD having the same content of my other DVD not working? Cross-checking the MD5 of all files (!) ? By the way: I updated my Suse 9.3 with OpenSuse 10.2. It seems all worked well, with the exception of printer settings (and Samba still works :) ). [opensuse] limiting coredumps

Hi, more of a general Unix question than a specific openSUSE question: My meachines run BASH, if I log in and run a program it'll run under that shell, I can set the ulimit for core dumps in the BASH config. If I have a script that runs under '/bin/sh' I can add 'ulimit -H -c 0' to that script to set the max core dump size to zero. I can do similar things for every different shell on my systems. However if I call a program from Cron or did 'ssh user@server command' then it won't run in a shell so how do I limit the size of core dumps should a program seg fault n crash? Hi all, I need to print to PDF from FireFox2. When print is selected, only the "Print to file PostScript/default" option is available besides the normal printers. OpenOffice Writer produces PDF's flawlessly. I have also read that Ghostscript 5.10 upwards installs ps2pdf. I have an Installed SUSE 10.1 with ghostscript 8.15.3-18.2 library & ghostscript-x11 V 8.15.2rc1-20. Print to PDF of web page contents is possible in Konqueror, but delivers this error message. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A print error occurred. I set up a machine under SuSE 10.2. during the setup I created a user and selected that the user receive any system mail. I now want to stop that so that root receives system mail. Does anyone have 10.2 on HP nx7400? Does it boot every time? I've seen a problem on two of these laptops where they would frequently stop at boot on "Activating device mapper". I have filed a bug. Hello- On my 10.2 box, I'm trying to add my various IMAP email accounts in Kontact, but everytime I go to 'Check What the Server Supports' in the 'Security' tab, I get the following error: Connect to most xxxx.xxxx.xxxx is broken I currently use a suse 9.2 box for mail with Kontact, and all is configured the same. It works on the 9.2 box and has for years. Even on ly laptop running 10.0 is fine. I've typed in the right username, passwd, mailhost, and port. The server is up and running and I can check mail with other mail clients. If I try to check email, I get an Error popup saying "The connection to server [named connection] was unexpectedly closed or timed out. [opensuse] Would like explanation from networking guru

I have a Dell D820 running Suse 10.2 with WinXP underparalles. I have WinXP logged on to the corporate network and can access the network with no problems. I have Linux using the Wireless network, and it wroks fine, other than the network dying now and then. I can access the internett fine. We have a Suse Linux 10.1 server on the corporate network running smb share, postgres database, and local http apache server. Since this is not on the windows domain, but on the same subnet, we have to access it using the ip address. This is no problem. The networks are different networks, 10;18.xx.xx and 192.168.xx.xx and not even connected via the internet as the corporate network is via a proxy server and vpn. Both network cards show up with ifconfig and I changed the default route from the windows network gateway to the wireless network gateway. What I don't understand and would like an explanation for, is that I can also access the linux server on the windows network, (file server and postgres and http) from linux on my laptop which is on a different network. How does this work? I did not even think it was possible, however I discovered it accidently when accessing the http, I thought it from Winxp & firefox, but it was firefox in Linux. Hi all, I'm trying to install the Citrix client on my box (OpenSuSe 10.2, x86_64) and have a problem. The Citrix docs say it requires OpenMotif2.2 or better. I've installed several (perhaps that's part of the problem?) and now have: openmotif-libs-32bit-2.3.0beta2-32 openmotif-2.3.0beta2-32 openmotif-libs-2.3.0beta2-32 all reported by an rpm query. However, when I try to install this thing the rpm installer claims: Unresolved dependencies: Installing ICAClient-9.0-1.i386[Local packages] There are no installable providers of libXm.so.3 for ICAClient-9.0-1.i386[Local packages] How do I know where to get libXm.so.3 (I'm assuming that it's not in the openmotif package after all?) hi susers! At last ! The virtualization revolution in Linux happens ! Until now, Linux had no quality virtualization available. At least no OSS solution existed, that is also user-friendly. Yesterday the world changed with the introduction of Innotek's VirtualBox (dual-licensed under GPL and proprietary license). This solution feels like professional VirtualPC/VMware Workstation: allows full integration of guest OSes (mouse pointer, etc...), works with Linux and Windows 2000/XP guests and hosts, and has a nice Qt3-based GUI. And it's Free ! Unfortunately AMD64 arch and Win9x OS are not supported at all. Not host and not guest. This solution is *much* more stable than Qemu/Xen/Bochs whatever the OSS world has today. (through it's still less stable than MS Virtual PC 2004) It is also *very* fast: Windows 2000 Guest installed & run faster than under VMware/VirtualPC. So please try it, if you like VMware and emulators in general. I seriously want this solution to be included in the main repository for openSUSE 10.3. Such high-quality OSS software, developed by a commercial company is a real rarity and a big asset for our community. [opensuse] Disappearing KDE panel after installing patches

Yesterday after installing some patches via Zen, my KDE panel disappeared. I've had this occur before after a KDE patch was installed, and normally I restart the window and display managers (ctrl-alt-backspace, init 3, or logout) and things usually com back. This did not work, so I deleted by ~/.kde. Once I logged back in through the session manager, the panel returned, and I configured it the way I wanted, set up my 4 desktops with separate backgrounds, and loaded my applications that I normally keep running in my desktops. While I'm not 100% sure of what is killing the panel, I was just wondering if anyone else had seen this. I don't have time to debug it until the weekend, but I will try to configure the desktops and panels, but not run the applications, then go step by step. By default, kde tries to load what was previously loaded, but the first step would be to set up an empty home session.
