[opensuse] Downgrade to Vista

Okay, this blows. (Sorry for the California term, but it is all I can think of.) After several hours of installing 10.3 on my laptop followed by terrible frustration and then several hours of installing 10.2 on my laptop, I've decided I need to downgrade to Vista. Unfortunately, the laptop must be encrypted. There is no other option, since it is a business laptop. >From what I can tell - I had a perfectly working laptop on Thursday. Yesterday I took it upon myself to upgrade to 10.3 and encrypt the home partition. Doing so caused numerous issues, mostly with locking up the screen and/or system randomly. I decided today to do a fresh install of 10.2 - which was working fine - on the system with an encrypted home partition. Same issues. System will lock up unexpectedly after either a few minutes or after an hour. I can only guess that the encryption is causing the issue. Unless anyone has further suggestions, it appears I need to downgrade to Vista (which came with the laptop) and bite the bullet. [opensuse] Laptop recomendations

I'm going to have to replace my old (6+ years) Toshiba that has a amd 450Mhz processor and a whopping 20GB disk. I'm looking for recommendations for a mid range ($1k - 1.5k) laptop that is compatible with Opensuse 10.3. Please, no flamefests!! Hi, I'm new with Yast2-metapackage-handler.... I already download the package, but when I try to use it I get an error.... I'm trying to install Tilda... Package Description: Tilda is a Linux terminal taking after the likeness of many classic terminals from first person shooter games, Quake, Doom and Half-Life (to name a few), where the terminal has no border and is hidden from the desktop until a key is pressed. After the installation Process I get this error.... Software installation Unfortunately the installation has failed, see the log file at /var/log/YaST2/y2log for more information. [opensuse] openSUSE 10.3 system freeze when reading secondary IDE channel

After upgrading from SUSE 10.1 to openSUSE 10.3 I'm experiencing system freezes when reading data from the secondary IDE channel. I've got two drives both a hard disk and a optical drive on both the primary and the secondary channel. This problem seems to appear only when using the mouse while reading data with high transfer rates from the secondary IDE channel. These freezes didn't happen under SUSE 10.1 (Kernel version 2.6.16) and don't happen under Knoppix 5.0.1 (Kernel version 2.6.17). They also happen when I'm using the openSUSE 10.3 Live CD KDE. No freeze occurs while writing data. While reading, the higher the data transfer rates the sooner the freeze will happen. In most cases first the mouse freezes followed by the keyboard. Sometimes I can still trigger an Emergency Sync by pressing ALT+SysRq+S but I cannot control the KDE desktop or switch to a console with the keyboard. Often I can shutdown the computer properly by pressing the power button of my PC but sometimes even this won't work and I have to reset the computer. Maybe I should also mention that since the upgrade I'm encountering occasionally sporadic freezes of the whole computer, mostly with blinking LEDs on the keyboard. [opensuse] ffmpeg - convert flac to mp3, keep tags

OK I've got the basics of ffmpeg, I can convert a FLAC file into MP3, but the catch is that the new MP3 has no ID3 tags. Now, I don't know too much about FLAC, but these files seem to have Artist, Title, etc. "tags" in them (at least they show up in Kaffeine), is there any way for ffmpeg to copy them over, or must I really create the tags by hand? [opensuse] nvidia & ralink conflict

Hi this is mostly a thanks for yast mostly sorting out my problem. I was running my 2.6.24-rc2-4 kernel again which I knew did not work with my legacy nvidia GeForce2 MX 200 card due to advice I found after reading mails about other people's problems installing ralink wireless cards. In fact after recompiling with my version of gcc ( above kernel was compiled with 4.3 ) and enabling the ralink drivers it worked perfectly but my desktop slowed due to nvidia being gone. Then I started yast sw_single and did a reset ignored dependency conflicts and verify system yast suddenly wanted to downgrade my kernel, install ralink drivers and install nvidia drivers again. I decided to go along and included kernel sources for said downgrade (upgrade for my old 2.6.22.9-0.4 ) and downloaded the whole kernel-default-2.6.22.13-0.3.i586.rpm and source and syms (remember I once said I wanted yast to keep copies once and smart package manager doesn't work properly yet) . I then rebooted and as usual my x server didn't start. I was ready for this. I logged in as root and ran NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.01-pkg1.run and it fixed my nvidia problem. My main problem is why did I have to do that, why couldn't my desktop come up immediately. I have noticed various other people with, what seems to be, the same problem. The suse nvidia legacy drivers have a problem that the nvidia ones don't and I think it's just a configuration one, sax doesn't work anymore, is this something to do with politics? I emailed nvidia about their legacy driver and 2.6.24-rc2-4 kernel by the way, I prefer the nvidia x server configuration from nvidia. Why can't suse use that one. [opensuse] Window Activation Options?

Somewhere or another, in all the possible configuration areas, there's an option that activates windows when the mouse passes over them. (I'm using KDE.) I must have thought it would be a good option to try, and I vaguely remember turning it on, but now it's driving me mad. After clicking where I want to insert text into an email message or an editor, for example, I habitually move the mouse cursor away from there, so it isn't included in the text I'm looking at. If I accidentally move the mouse off the message and onto the Thunderbird window behind it, say, then the main Thunderbird window is activated, the message is deactivated, and I can't enter text until I move the cursor back onto the message window. A similar thing happens if I move the mouse cursor off the gedit window I'm using. Mere words can't express how annoying that is, and turning that option off would be far preferable than forming new editing habits. Trouble is, I can't find it again. I've looked everywhere I can think of, and can't find any such option anywhere. [opensuse] USB storage - kde3 and camera

Hey Group; I have a Olympus SP-550UZ digital camera which is to be a remote file system similar to a USB hard drive filesystem. It works only if I have it hooked up at boot time on SuSE 10.3 GM. "lsusb", "hwinfo --usb" and KDE3 pops up a selection menu. if done at boot time even "I hate to say it" -> My Computer will not show the files until I "mount" it "mount /dev/sdd1 /media/camera" At that point all of the fils.jpg show up. Also "modprobe vfat" seems to be automatic However, if I connect the camera after a full bootup "lsusb" sees it. KDE3 sees it.
