I never removed the DVD from the drive -- even after the installation was complete. It's so obvious. Well, I've taken it out now, and am deeply embarrassed. I can only apologize for bothering you and Rajko unnecessarily. Of course now the boot sequence is exactly what it should be. Tomorrow or the next day I'll do the necessarily retrieval of data that was not backed up. Then I'll install v10.3 over the failed upgrade, but with some changes in partitioning. I will alloacate 20GB for /root and the same amount for /home, so that user apps and data will not be affected by any future upgrading disaster. All the partitions are EXT3 (no more XFS). Therefore no need for special partitions in which to put GRUB -- I eventually learn lessons; it just takes more time than it used to. If it is true that OS/2 supports a EXT3 driver, I might instead do away with the maintenance partition, and rely on OS/2 (actually eCS v1.1) for emergency manipulation; I have to think about that. > The easiest solution for you might be to boot into OS/2 and reinstall > standard MBR code with DFSee or LVM.EXE, and at the same time verify that the > 0Ah partition is marked as the only active/startable partition in the master > partition table. [opensuse] 10.3 Installation Problem

Folks, I have installed OpenSuse 10.3 (from a downloaded ISO and from the retail package) on two of my computers without a problem. The third computer is giving me fits. It presently has v.10.2 loaded. When I boot from the DVD to install v.10.3 from the retail package, Yast comes up without any problems, but bombs out when it tries to load the repositories from the DVD. I have tried two separate DVD drives, the newest was a double layer drive. The double layer drive gives error message that no repositories were found. Running check media gives a message stating that the media is broke. The second DVD brings up Yast but fails to install the repositories and keeps asking to retry. Is there some setting I can use to ensure that the repositories are found on the DVD. This is the same DVD that I used to install 10.3 on the other computers. Any advice would be appreciated. There is a page on booting from usb in the wiki, http://en.opensuse.org/SuSE_install_from_USB_drive the name is partially misleading because you can simply boot and not only install, so I created a new page named http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=Boot_from_USB&redirect=no this is for now just a redirection, but may be changed soon when the two pages may diverge But before going further, I have a question: why is it necessary to abort install and search manually for iso image, and not boot directly in the image? [opensuse] CLI id3 tag editor with UTF-8 support

Is there a command-line id3 tag editor that supports UTF-8? I have tried python-eyeD3 and id3v2, neither seems to properly support UTF-8. To test I tried (among others): id3v2 -a ö test.mp3 eyeD3 -a ö test.mp3 eyeD3 --remove-all --set-encoding utf8 -a ö test.mp3 All of which set the artist field to "Ã¶" and not to "ö" as can be seen in konqueror/amarok. [opensuse] Can not login as an user but root

Hi, I use opensuse-10.2. After upgrading kernel-default-2.6.18.8-0.5 to kernel-default-2.6.18.8-0.7 - 0.7 is latest, I can not login as an user account in both KDE/Gnome. Only root account can login. When login as user, white window comes. it looks like frozen. I tried and figure it out below: 1. this trouble does not depend desktop environment: I tried KDE and Gnome. Both have same trouble. In KDE, initial window comes, but when clicking start menu, it opens white window. I can move mouse but nothing is activated. In Gnome, no initial window comes, but all the white display. 2. this trouble happens after kernel-default-2.6.18.8-0.7, I could login as user until kernel-2.6.18.8-0.5. 3. this trouble does not depend monitor driver: I tried dell flat panel monitor and panasonic monitor too. 4. I created new user account after upgrading but not fixed. Above symptom I guess this trouble depends on kernel version or x11 version with this latest kernel. Does someone know the same trouble or how to fix it?
