[opensuse] openSuSE 10.3 - Madwifi/Atheros Card Signal Strength Cut in Half

Listmates: With 10.3, my AR5212/5213 wireless card using the madwifi driver and wpa_supplicant I get only 50% of the signal strength that it did with 10.2. This Signal Strength Change Occurred Between openSuSE 10.2 and 10.3. Since the system is a dual boot system, I can confirm that signal strength is still 100% normal on the dark side of my laptop. With openSuSE 10.2 using madwifi and wpa_supplicant, signal strength was always 100% no matter where I was in my house or office. (Both have linksys WRT54G access points). The distances involved are 15 meters or less. The signal strength loss occurred when I upgraded my laptop from 10.2 to 10.3. The loss is present even if I put my laptop (Toshiba P35) right in front of the AP. (I have had the same wireless setup for over 2 years) Whatever changed in the latest 1 or 2 releases of madwifi or wpa has definitively caused changes to the ability of the driver to get good signal strength. I don't know what is causing it, but I can CONFIRM the problem with madwifi under openSuSE 10.3 with the Atheros AR5212/5213 driver on my Toshiba P35. athstats now shows crc errors that were not there before: [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # athstats 379 tx management frames 88 long on-chip tx retries 345 tx frames with no ack marked 10 tx frames with an alternate rate 299 rx failed due to bad CRC 28 PHY errors 28 CCK restart 1312 periodic calibrations 1 rfgain value change rssi of last rcv: 28 79 switched default/rx antenna Antenna profile: [1] tx 1188 rx 24964 [2] tx 176 rx 4211 [root Rankin-P35a/home/david] # athstats ath0 input output altrate short long xretry crcerr crypt phyerr rssi rate 30621 1592 10 0 88 0 312 0 28 30 0M Any thoughts? [opensuse] Wrong symlink /etc/alternatives/java after apply security updates (openSUSE 10.3)

Hi, I have installed (using rpms) in my openSUSE 10.3 Java 1.5 and Java 1.6. Yesterday I installed using openSUSE updater two security fixes for Java 1.5 and 1.6. Before doing this, symlink /etc/alternatives/java was pointing to the path of Java 1.6 but after applying the security updates it didn't point to the new version of Java 1.6, it still pointed to the old path. We've been discussing this in the spanish mailing list and seems that more people have the same problem. Is this a bug? [opensuse] Desktop craps out - switching XDMCP sessions

I frequently connect to other computers, using XDMCP on my home system. One problem I first noticed in SUSE 10.2 appears to be worse in 10.3. When switching back to the main system desktop, occasionally, I get just a black screen, with a hypen or underscore character in the top left corner. The keyboard is completely unresponsive. After several seconds, it then switches to the login screen and any apps that were running are gone. The other system is not affected. I have a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GS video card and am running 64 bit SUSE 10.3. I did in fact try it in two stages, updating the kernel, and then tried the array. no luck. I then thought it might be a problem with just raid5. I created a raid0 array, and that was successful. I then created a raid1 array, and that too was successful, although it took a while and it sounded like a hard drive was clicking. With the remaining space on the drives I then tried to create a raid 5 array. it immediately failed with a different error message, but now there was a message on the console. S.M.A.R.T. indicated /sdc was failing. I removed the 3rd drive and voila, YAST had no trouble creating a raid5 array. it was a hardware problem all along. I had SMART enabled the whole time and it kept saying the drives were fine. It was only after repeated attempts to create a raid 5 array that SMART finally indicated the drive was bad. Although time consuming, the exercise was helpful to me. From your YAST screen shot I realized that one didn't need to use the entire disk for an array, just equal size partitions. i had been under the impression you had to use the whole drive. Thus I will format things differently. Linux does the file serving, but we have one major application that must be run on a Windows server. I run it as a virtual machine using vmware. Since raid 0 is the fastest, I will create a raid0 array for virtual machines. Then two raid5 arrays for / and for /storage. I back up to storage and to an external usb drive. Thanks again for all your help. Sorry it was a hardware problem, but since SMART indicated no problem, i wasn't sure. There must be a way to test drives to make sure they are good before beginning aninstallation. Mike -- Michael A. [opensuse] http requests time out

After the latest security update all my http requests time out (10.2). I have a working internet connection, since mail and ssh work perfectly. It is not related to the firewall ( stopping the firewall makes no difference) and it is not related to the browser, because it happens in Firefox, Opera, Konqueror and also in Yast online update. Where should I look now? /var/log/messages shows nothing of interest. [opensuse] Applying desktop settings across the board

I've spent the last week and a half tinkering around and getting my setup just right (in Gnome). Chosen the preferred desktop theme, font sizes, panel placements, chosen applets, customized gnome-terminal settings, etc, etc, etc.... Is there a way to mirror this across my system? [opensuse] How to keep SuSE from tagging a new MAC as a different interface

Using VM's, the MAC address of the fake-nic gets changed often, and SuSE changes what should be eth0 to eth37, or whatever. This means I have to continuously delete the old nic and configure the new one. I'd Like SuSE to just eth0 for whatever it sees, and just use the existing configuration. Any ideas? [opensuse] Two 10.3 problems

When I shut down my 10.3 box with the panel shutdown applet. it does not go down every time, the desktop lets me change virtual desktops but nothing else works. After several minutes I go out to a virtual console login and execute an init 0 or init 6 whichever is appropriate and things happen. no log messages appear in /var/log/messages I am logged in as a non-privileged user. problem #2 My work network refuses to allow everybody 100mbit/full duplex so most ports are set to 10mbit/full and some of us special people get 100/full. but auto-negotiation is off, and so I have to use "ethtool eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off" This worked flawlessly with 10.2 but with 10.3 when I set this the network adapter just stops working altogether, no IP address etc. -- Todd Ness

[opensuse] HELP !! First sata drive changed. Can't boot system on second drive

Hi I have a BIG problem. I have a brand new Dell with 2 sata drive. I installed Opensuse 10.3 on /dev/sdb while WinXp was installed (factory) on dev/sda/ Everything went smoothly and I spent 2 days to install and recover data from my old PC (dead). However, after 2 days, S.M.A.R.T indicated that dev/sda was dying. (the drive with Windows and... grub on the MBR). Dell promptly send a new disk, and I replaced the faulty one. This drive has nothing on it. I thought that, booting on the SuSe 10.3 dvd and opening a root console to reinstall grub would do the trick. I did that once, when I upgraded a dual boot machine from win 2000 to win XP and had to restore the MBR. So i booted from the dvd, choosed installation,>more option, >boot existing system The installer found my / partition (dev/sdb1) but stop before allowing GUI. It asked for a root password. I gave it and had a prompt. then i typed : grub find /boot/grub/stage1 /// found (hd1,0) which is correct (dev /sdb1) root (hd1,0) setup (hd0) quit I rebooted and nothing !!! What did i missed ? Should i install grub ? ie grub-install hd0 ? I thought the previous command would do it ? Should I install windoz on dev/sda ? Should I install opensuse 10.3 on dev/sda and during installation choose /dev/sdb3 as home directory ? Should I install Opensuse 10.3 on dev/sda and then move all the data from /dev/sdb ? the two last seems to be great ideas, however, it means that I will have to start again all the installation !! How safe is the second one ? I really need to boot the installed system very quickly !!! Thank you for your help.
