[opensuse] HELP !! First sata drive changed. Can't boot system on second drive
Hi I have a BIG problem. I have a brand new Dell with 2 sata drive. I installed Opensuse 10.3 on /dev/sdb while WinXp was installed (factory) on dev/sda/ Everything went smoothly and I spent 2 days to install and recover data from my old PC (dead). However, after 2 days, S.M.A.R.T indicated that dev/sda was dying. (the drive with Windows and... grub on the MBR). Dell promptly send a new disk, and I replaced the faulty one. This drive has nothing on it. I thought that, booting on the SuSe 10.3 dvd and opening a root console to reinstall grub would do the trick. I did that once, when I upgraded a dual boot machine from win 2000 to win XP and had to restore the MBR. So i booted from the dvd, choosed installation,>more option, >boot existing system The installer found my / partition (dev/sdb1) but stop before allowing GUI. It asked for a root password. I gave it and had a prompt. then i typed : grub find /boot/grub/stage1 /// found (hd1,0) which is correct (dev /sdb1) root (hd1,0) setup (hd0) quit I rebooted and nothing !!! What did i missed ? Should i install grub ? ie grub-install hd0 ? I thought the previous command would do it ? Should I install windoz on dev/sda ? Should I install opensuse 10.3 on dev/sda and during installation choose /dev/sdb3 as home directory ? Should I install Opensuse 10.3 on dev/sda and then move all the data from /dev/sdb ? the two last seems to be great ideas, however, it means that I will have to start again all the installation !! How safe is the second one ? I really need to boot the installed system very quickly !!! Thank you for your help. Hi fazer,
Thank you for the reply,
But i probably didn't explain my problem correctly. When I boot from
the DVD and choose other then boot installed system, the system starts
and stop in the middle with a prompt for root password.
I can see everything in my / partition but I can't go to /home
(separate partition).
Any idea ?
Thank you

I found and solved the problem. To anyone who this could happen, and who is under too much stress to properly think (like I was), here is the solution: After booting the installed system from /dev/sdb1, the system stopped, asked for a root prompt. This is because the NEW SATA drive do not has the same disk ID has the previous one and that no partitions are present, thus my fstab was WRONG. Under the rescue console, I just deleted the lines corresponding to the previous partitions on the faulty SATA drive (was /dev/sda), rebooted and VOILA !! I should have thought at that before !!!! I now created new ext3 partitions on the new /dev/sda drive and i will change my fstab. Sorry for the inconvenience (and for the unsigned previous messages, I was using the webmail which I never use) Good Week End to all of you PS: thank you fazer for your reply. Thanks Patrick, That's what I have done, and noticed the changed in fstab :-) PS: By the way, do you know how to change the disk labels on the My computer (sysinfo) ? They all appears as 88Go media...120Go media or something, though they are correctly mounted on mountpoints I have created with the YaST partitioner (qtparted i guess ?) ie Data1, Backup.... When I right click on it, select properties, and change the names, the changes are not made. PPS: I may recall wrongly, but didn't you created customized rkhunter rpms for suse a while ago ? I am asking because, i installed it (1.2.8) using YaST, and during the checks, it complains about unknown system and thus skipped the md5 checks. Do you know where we can find a rkhunter that is aware of the md5 hashes of Opensuse 10.3 (for both i386 and x86_64 architecture), or how to create the rpms like you did ? YaST partitioner will allow you to assign lables, but I do not know if sysinfo uses them :^( I do not recall the procedure, but it may be necessary to assign the names/labels via hal, iirc. I do not have that info handy, someone will perhaps chime in or it s/b available in the list archives (have fun searching thru the off-list-topics/?spam?).
When I right click on it, select properties, and change the names, the changes are not made.
define "it", pls

yes

the original author has left rkhunter, but another has assumed development. The original author was aware that there were problems or differences of opinion relating to the "SuSE way", specifically in relation to application version numbers and patching applications. I do not know if this has been resolved as I ceased using rkhunter.
Many thanks for your help
