I mean, _you_ know that: a) those 7 steps are 1) necessary and 2) sufficient and that b) you can do all those things safely, and be back exactly where you left, with no other introduced problems or omissions affecting your ability to continue doing the primary purpose of the computer. Less knowledgeable and practiced people don't. Those of us who aren't doing software and system config for a living, or as our major hobby, likely have just one Linux box that is also our main/only computer. So, we may tinker a bit, but any given problem is researched and solved just one time. We don't get to repeat and test and refine the fix, and toss away all our mistakes and dead-ends that we encountered while getting there, cuz at that point, we're done. There's no second, third, and twenty-fourth computer on which to consolidate our grasp and pile up some experience. After the next SUSE version is installed, that problem is gone, or if it's back it's back with a new cause. Many people actually need to do a thing more than once to learn it and retain it. For example, I had to learn to calculate mode-lines and such, to get my video working properly in SuSE 7.point.something. You'd expect me to know how to do that (and why and where and...) today. But I couldn't. I'd have to research it again. I'd have a small advantage of having an idea where to start, or some search terms to use ... but there's the disadvantage of five million additional pages on the web, on roughly that topic, since the last time. After I finally fixed the problem once, I stopped, because that was my only computer. Having stopped, I did not re-inforce my learning. I definitely did not streamline it and clean out all the hundreds of false starts and dead-ends that made the first time take a month. So those wrong approaches are all still there, waiting to trip me, and undermining any confidence if I had to tackle another video config problem today. Not interesting, but just one explanation of why not everybody knows what to do to gather just the right bug-diagnosing info, and why they don't have the confidence to do it... if they're working on a computer that needs to stay available for their real work or their real hobby. Yes, I know you get over that kind of trepidation real quick if you land in a job where you configure ten computers a day, every day, while debugging networks, recovering databases, etc... but then, you don't land in a job like that if you aren't suited to it. [opensuse] Adding trusted keys for ZYPP repos

Dear SUSE types, How, using the command line, can I add a trusted key that rug/yast will use to verify signed ZYPP repositories? I am trying to add ZYPP repositories in an autoinstall script. (I can do it manually using YaST 'Installation Sources' and it asks me if I want to trust the key used to sign the repository. But I don't want to have to do this manually on every machine.) The repository is one I have created myself using createrepo and signed as described here: http://en.opensuse.org/Secure_Installation_Sources#The_.22repomd.22_or_.22Y… To sign the repository I 'cd' to the top-level directory and ran gpg -a -u rpm-packager --detach-sign repodata/repomd.xml gpg -a --export rpm-packager > repodata/repomd.xml.key So I have the key in repodata/repomd.xml.key On the new machine (in an autoyast post-init script) I want to add the key to the rug keyring. I have tried gpg --homedir /root/.gnupg \ --import repodata/repomd.xml.key to add it to root's keyring, and I have tried adding the key to the zmd whitelist using rug ka packager 68C0D40964D6D632 "6E55 E6C6 8A0D 5557 C10D 571B 68C0 D409 64D6 D632" But neither work. When I run rug --quiet sa -t zypp \ nfs://repo.host/path/suse-10.1/extras \ SUSE-10.1-extras I get an error 'parsing metadata: Untrusted key rpm-packager ... (I am paraphrasing, I don't have a copy of the message and can't reproduce it without re-installing.) However, if I delete an installation source added using YaST 'Installation Source' graphical tool and then run the above 'rug sa' command it works, presumably because the key has been kept. Anyone got any good ideas? Memory demands of new update technology

Hi, When 10.1 came out, it was mentioned that the new update methodology needed 256 MB to run properly. -- Is this still the case, with the fixes? -- If yes: Can anybody in the know tell if that will change with 10.2? Background: I need to upgrade the SUSE installation on my firewall which has only 128 MB memory. I would like to know if SUSE remains a long-term option for these kind of low-powered machines or if I need to switch distributions there. Dialup problem

gnome panel not responding

Have now experienced similar problems with three different systems (two 10.0, one 10.1). I'm surprised that my quick look around has found no solutions - I doubt that I am the only one seeing this. I'm somebody who normally downloads new versions as soon as they become available in often-subscribed-to repositories (e.g., gnome). When I first installed my systems, I did not have a problem. Chances are that the "panel not responding" problem arose from an upgrade somewhere - but I don't know which, nor whether the recent kernel upgrade I did has made things worse. Symptom: Clicking the mouse while the cursor is anywhere on the gnome panel does not cause anything to happen. (Where I've defined both a top and a bottom panel, the same lack of response happens with either.) 'killall gnome-panel' redraws the panel(s), but does not affect the non-responsiveness. On a panel where I had previously specified a clock, the clock is not being shown. [The main menu, and the workplace shifter, are shown - but do not respond.] Looked in .xsession-errors. Mostly ALSA problems (I do not even use ALSA for anything!). Also some asserts that mean nothing to me, e.g.: (gnome-panel:4540): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion `dest_width > 0' failed (gnome-panel:4540): Wnck-CRITICAL **: wnck_screen_get_windows: assertion `WNCK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed (gnome-panel:4540): libgnomevfs-CRITICAL **: gnome_vfs_uri_new_private: assertion `text_uri != NULL' failed I've tried deleting everything in the user's home directory that begins with '.g*' - that removes icons from the panel, but does not fix the problem. On at least one system, whether after a reboot I even get to see a panel seems to be random - sometimes when I log on I see the unresponsive panel, but at other times I get an error message something like "I've detected a panel already running - will exit now" -- result is a screen with _no_ panels shown.] Would like to get the gnome panel functioning. (Reposting this email with different subject as I fear it was sorted into the junk mail folder of most people on this list.) Hi I wondered if anyone here has a take on how to best setup a SUSE 10.1 server to fight incomming unwanted emails for 10-100 clients. We are situated in Norway so most english language mails are unwanted. Most articles I found on google are old and outdated. So I was wondering if anyone has something fresh... Suse 9.3 and DGE-528T gigabit card

Hi, What should I do to enable gigabit speed on my DGE-528T gigabit card? My LAN car works, but speed is not gigabit. Cables are Cat5e, switch is gigabit. I think I have problem with driver here, am I? Zoran

[opensuse] How long does it usually take for a reply on Bugzilla entries

Hi, How long does it usually take for a first reply on Bugzilla entries? Be it a status change or anything that shows me, that my work reached some people? I mean: Back in August I created three tickets (202492, 202622 & 202692) and none of them seems to have a single entry. All of them are considered new without any comments. I'm wondering if it's of any use to post comments on Bugzilla or if this sort of entries is not requested at all. Any light on this? Dominique

Hi, I've been seeing that since TB 1.5.0.2: The SuSE version of thunderbird is unable to use the "-remote" command when there is a blank in the subject (as it happens frequently when you use the "send link by email" feature of Firefox): galois [8:51] fst 1002) thunderbird -remote "mailto(bla@bla?subject=test\ me)" Error: Failed to send command: 500 command not parseable No matter how you quote the blank. This error occurs only with the SuSE rpm, not with the thunderbird binary you can download from mozilla.org.
