hi in argentina, we can buy computer with linux without problem, in usa, canada it's harder.... dell, hp, compaq, nec, gateway sale all their computer for the public with linux... why company like novell, red hat, mandriva, lindows don't make pressure on their company to sale computer with linux? thank

Kernel 2.6.16.21-0.21 issues

I have a working SuSE 10.1 system running kernel version 2.6.16.21-0.13. Updating the kernel to 2.6.16.21-0.21 renders the system unbootable. My /boot is /dev/hda1, a resierfs file system on /dev/hda My / is /dev/system/system, a resiferfs file system on top of LVM. The above layout works fine when I boot the machine into the 2.6.16.21-0.13 kernel. However, booting into the 2.6.16.21-0.21 system makes the system complain about not finding device /dev/system/system, and then drops me to a shell prompt without / being mounted. The messages that come across are to the effect of "/dev/system/system does not exist" and "device-mapper: device does not appear to be in the device hash table". With my little knowledge of Linux, I gather this to be an issue with the initrd. I noticed that while booting with the new broken (broken at least for me) kernel, module dm_mod loaded successfully. I understand this to be something needed for lvm. My question at this point is how do I get kernel 2.6.16.21-0.21 to boot and run on this machine on which kernel 2.6.16.21-0.13 runs fine? Go through the archive and you'll find the first post of me to start this thread. I started it after discussion with nVidia; They HOST the packages on their server, but the package came by Novell! Why is everybody just pointing the ball around? Sure, it's easy to say: if the vendor doesn't create drivers, don't buy their hardware. Then PLEASE: What graphic card would you suggest at the moment to have full native 3D support? If this Opensource community is that strong, why is the nvidia driver not capable of 3D? Because they feel there is another driver from nVidia? But still they feel that this one does not suit the needs? That's just bul**** Don't forget: Linux needs the support from Hardware vendors to be successful on the desktop (as well as on the server, but there at least graphic is less an issue... YET). I agree, it's good to have the kernel drivers open, for security revious and development. There's no question in this. xinet.d ftp service .. anonymous access to /home/httpd/logs

I have searched and searched and read through countless pages of docs, but for whatever reason I cannot find how to: turn on anonymous ftp access and configure the default directory (in fact I want to limit it to being the ONLY directory) as /home/httpd/logs Is there a way to do this? Also ... it would be good if I could also limit the ip addresses that the FTP process server will accept connections from. Is there a way to do this? Peter

Grub and BIOS limitations

I think the weird grub behavior I've encountered really is related to BIOS limitations. Following the instructions in the grub manual, I built a boot diskette and booted from it, getting a grub prompt. I then issued the following commands, with these responses: root (hd0,7) Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS root (hd0,6) Filesystem type is Reiserfs, partition type is 0x83 root (hd0,7) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type is 0x83 I then issued the root (hd0,7) command repeatedly and about half the time I got the Error 18 and about half the time I got the filesystem type. As I mentioned earlier, my hard drive is a 200GB model and my motherboard is a Biostar P4M800-M7A, with an Award Bios v6.00PG. I'm now trying to update the BIOS, but I still don't know where to get information about the capacity of the current BIOS. I cannot find it anywhere in the BIOS configuration utility.
