[opensuse] NFS network install

I'm trying to install 10.1 using NFS install. After mounting the DVD iso, (also tried with CD isos), and chooseng F3/F4 NFS install, and setting up server and mount-point, and verifying the mount worked etc, I still get "Cannot find the image" error message. I tried the same but booting from the SLES10 boot CD, and it actually worked fine - and installed the 10.1. So it seems there's a bug in the 10.1 boot CD (at least the x86_64 version). Any way to get that bug worked-around? [opensuse] afs under suse 10.1 kernel 2.6.16.21-0.13-default

I tried in several steps (rpm, compiling sources, but no kernel compiling) to install afs-client under suse 10.1 kernel 2.6.16.21-0.13-default, but failed in need to have the kernel-modul libafs.ko for the named kernel. Could anyone tell me if it's possible to install and run afs-client without kernel-compiling?

using Remote Cups printer

Hi, On my 10.1 laptop I'm trying to 'install' a printer that's connected to another linux-box (suse 9.3) at the office. It's driven by Cups. My desktop PC (10.0) can use the printer, AFAIK I had to do nothing to install it, as stated in the Cups-documents. On my laptop I can't use it, local Cups does only see the network printer I installed at home. I tried to install it via Yast : Hardware/Printer Network printer Printing via Cups network server Cups with broadcasting (also tried Cups-client) Listen to IPP-broadcast : Deny/Accept refuse from all accept from 192.168.0.0/24 (is my local subnet) accept from @ local Ports in firewall open : all my network cards (wired and wireless) This results in an unknown printer. When I modify this to my printer (HP Laserjet 4050 series) that seems OK (but there is no device name, the other printer is /printer:9100). The last OK says : printer cannot be installed because spool is not supported (is this missing devicename ?) Tried with or without firewall running, firewall running with IPP_client active, no result. I'm stuck. Any suggestions ? What is the JBD error about and how to fix it?

Recently I was exposed to the fsck hell run and immediately after fsck was run, there was an error about JBD ie # JBD: barrier-based sync failed on hda1 - disabling barriers # I looked at http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=suse-linux-e&r=1&w=2 and didn't find out what might be causing it. I would assume it has something to do with journalling ie JournalBackupData but why or how to fix escapes me. What is it and where/what can I do to stop it? Nomachine's Solaris NX client doesn't work with SUSE 10.1 NX server

Hi, I cannot connect to the SUSE 10.1 NX server with the Nomachine's Solaris NX client (http://www.nomachine.com/) running on SPARC Solaris 9. Has anybody got it working? Any ideas how to fix it? I used knx to connect from a 400 MHz Celeron PC to a 2.8 GHz Pentium4 PC (both running SUSE 10.1) via knx over a 10 Mb/s Ethernet and I was pleasantly surprised with the speed. So I would like to use NX on a Solaris client too. More info: SUSE firewall is switched off on the server. Knx sessions from from the server to the server work OK. shell command to mount a cdrom or dvd?

Hi, I just installed suse 10.1 on my pc. The install went smoothly. I'd like to mount a dvd using a simple shell command. On my FreeBSD box it's easy to figure out since the installation put an entry for the dvd into /etc/fstab. I'm not sure what the device would be for Suse. thanks, -Dan

Patch Mirrors

Where has the list of patch mirrors gone in 10.1? Up to 10.0, YOU would give a list of update servers to use, now one is automatically being set. A friend is having problems with the auto-selected mirror giving errors with the Kernel update and timing out on other packages. There doesn't seem to be a way to select anoter patch mirror from YOU, and searching the Wiki, I can't find any patch servers... Do we now just choose another internet install server and the patches get stuck in there? I can find mirror lists for upgraded version, enhanced version, packman, guru etc. but doing a search doesn't list any patch servers... -- David Wright "I got to go figure," the tenant said. [SLE] Installing software off the DVD?

Hi, I just installed Suse 10.1 on my pc. During the install, I asked it to install as little as possible so I'd know soon if I had any problems with the PC. The install went smooth. Now I need to install more software. Things like emacs, X-windows, Libraries for oracle... I think I have 2 choices: 1. wipe the box clean and go through another install which adds a lot more software. Or... 2. add software to my current bare bones setup. I like 2 because I want to get handy at installing software on my Suse box. I'm not sure about the proper way to add software from the 10.1 DVD into the box. Do I use rpm? apt-get? or something specific to Suse? Most of my software installation experience is on Solaris and FreeBSD. There, I use pkg_add, ports, and plain-old make. Help anyone? -Dan

a NERO user familiar with backing up data on multisession CDR, how do I do it in Linux too?

Hello. I was a happy user of Nero on Windows, though I am not a happy Windows user and now switched to Linux. My problem is I cannot backup using my favorite way anymore: I used to back up our project files (devided into 8 categories, each category have about 200MB files) on daily basis. This is how I do it on Windows. 1. on monday, prepare 8 empty CDR, one for each category, back up everything (each CDR take 200MB with 400MB free space); 2. on the following days, launch Nero and select continue multi-session, it will AUTOMATICALLY add every file added in that day or replaced in that day, removing every file removed that day, and create another session for only the changed documents. Every day around 30MB files are changed in each category, every CDR is filled with an 30MB session. 3. repeat this for one week, on the weekend, store these CDR backups and prepare new blank CDR for the next week. This is actually very convenient for me, each CDR is labeled with week number and project category name. If the manager ask for files on Jan 12th in the training project, I go to find the CDR in training project backup CDs, find that week's backup, figure out 12th is a Thursday, thus mount the 4th session. I actually have been doing this for years. Now I switched to SuSE linux and no longer know how to do the same operation. k3b doesn't automatically replace old files when I continue multi-session disc, besides, there seems to be no way to remove a file from a previous session, right click a file in an imported session in k3b, there is no option to remove it. I am not afraid of commandline, thus if it is possible at all to do the backup the same mechanism I did on Windows, I would love to sit down and write some backup scripts with mkisofs/cdrecord. However as I read through the manual of both mkisofs and cdrecord, there are no clear instructions on how to modify the directory structure of previous session and apply it to current session. E.g. in mkisofs -C and -M can be used to import previous session, but there are no written instruction on how to remove a file after imported previous session. Can you please let me know if it is possible at all to manipulate the backup operation in Linux? If possible, where can I look for docs on how to generate proper iso image with mkisofs for a session modified from previous session (more specifically, how to delete a file from previous session)? Thank you in advance! P.S. I also tried nero Linux version, for two reasons I cannot use it yet: first it doesn't install at all (some errors), second, it seems not able to operate through SSH, since after switched to Linux we separated file server to the server room 50m from my office, I would prefer to sit in the office to do the backup by using scripts and ssh. P.S. Please redirect me to another proper mailing list if you think I'd better post questions there. I am a bit afraid this question is pretty into the depth of mkisofs and should go to some other groups. P.S.
