I finally have my system back. I wiped out all the partitions (except for Windows) and recreated them with a small boot partition at the front. I also reseated my hard drive cable. I don't know which of these steps did the trick and which were actually unnecessary, but the end result was that I now have 10.0 up and running on that machine. Paul

They would call, all excited, yelling about their system being broke, I would show up, grab the console to start the shutdown sequence and then the dba would start screaming about how I couldn't take an in-service system off line without release authorization, to which I would say, you said it was broke. Call me when it is. At those times when I did get the system out of service, I would always be asked how long it would be down, to which I would always reply, Until it is fixed. A side note: That was when I observed that once you could type more than 25 wpm you could no longer be trusted to repair hardware. The only path open then was to become a DBA, for the same reason. =============

Thanks again to all for helping me get running again. I have been putting it to good use, and it seems to be running better than before the problem with the update. Of course that's what an update is supposed to do. Just curious though, about the other subjects concerning the kernel update 2.6.16.21-0.21 (the one this subject line was supposed to be listed as). Does anyone know yet if the cause of my trouble was connected in any way with these others? --ED--

Sony IC Recorder with Suse 10

I want to somehow get the digital recordings taken with my Sony IC Recorder onto my SuSE 10 machine, but the device is not recognized by SuSE. Recommendations? -- Cheers, wmeler

What happened to my Samba?

Dear list, I setup samba and i could open shared folder. And then i don't know why (as i didn't change the smb.conf), i can't login whenever login prompt shows up. It happens as if my password is wrong. I checked the log.smbd nothing's changed. Xen machines with NFS roots [SUSE 10.1]

Hey, all -- I'm trying to set up Xen machines with NFS root filesystems. The host machine (Dom0) is running SUSE 10.1, fully updated. I'm trying to install SUSE 10.1 onto the guest machines, via an NFS share. The YaST installer module looks like it doesn't handle this type of install properly, so I'm having to do a largely manual process. However, I'm having troubles -- the NFS filesystem isn't being imported. Has anyone run into this, who might be able to offer some help? Here's my machine config: #disk = [ 'phy:/dev/xenmachines/master-boot,hda1,w' ] memory = 256 vcpus = 1 builder = 'linux' kernel = '/tmp/installsystem/vmlinuz-2.6.16.13-4-xen' ramdisk = '/tmp/installsystem/inst-initrd' name = 'master' vif = [ 'mac=00:16:3e:6f:c2:0d' ] dhcp = 'static' ip = '192.168.1.26' netmask = '255.255.255.0' gateway = '192.168.1.253' hostname = 'rt' root = '/dev/nfs' nfs_server = '192.168.1.50' nfs_root = '/space/XenMachines/master-32' localtime = 0 on_poweroff = 'destroy' on_reboot = 'destroy' on_crash = 'destroy' extra = 'install=nfs://192.168.1.50/space/LinuxDistros/suse/10.1/inst-source TERM=xterm textmode=1' When I do `xm create -c master`, I end up in the YaST installation system. However, just after the license agreement a popup appears that says "No hard disks and no hard disk controllers were found for the installation. Check your hardware." Probably also relevant are the following two lines that appear as part of the boot messages, just before YaST starts up: Sending DHCP request to eth0... lockd: failed to open /var/lib/nfs/state: err=-2

I tried reformatting all partitions and doing a complete reinstall. And I still got the read error! But now I have a hunch of what is going on, yet to be verified. You might remember that I commented that the problems started after I had moved the guts of the machine (motherboard and drives) to a new case. That didn't seem relevant at the time. I also noted that the results of root (hd0,6) were inconsistent, which strongly suggests that hardware is involved. Putting all of this together, the most likely cause is that the hard drive cable is not well seated in the connectors. I haven't yet opened up the box to reseat the IDE cable (it really is an 80-pin one) but I shall do so shortly. One intermittent connection and one missing connection could well account for everything I have seen. I've checked out the drive itself quite thoroughly -- but I don't know how to check out the cable other than inspecting it visually. Any ideas? I'll report back if I have more success once I've tried reseating the cable. Paul
