Why "Xntp" and not just "ntp" package name?

Was curious, anyone know why the ntp package is named xntp under SuSE? I know its been that way since the 7.x days, and now it's likely for the easy compatibility during upgrades, but how did it get the "x" in the first place? Just curious... tnx, Linda

does Suse support nvidia (nforce 410 & geforce 6100) ?

Hi I'm thinking on buying a XPC system (Shuttle /G5 2100) which I've been told contains:/ - NorthBridge: NVIDIA GeForce 6100 GPU - SouthBridge: NVIDIA nForce 410 MCP I like the looks of the XPC but I want to use Suse's linux. *Can anyone tell me if Suse works on this platform ? Is there a specific fora for Suse & nvidia stuff ? *I've been trying to find out on my own but haven't found a conclusive statement. I've found that 10.0 supported on this page http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.11.html but then this other page http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#4 talks about recompiling and I'm too knew to Linux to get into that every time there is an updated kernel. Then this other page http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA#Legacy_chipset_support says that recompiling no longer works and that a patch must be used. Things are getting worse ! *Will all these lead to a degraded performance ?* By the way, what does "legacy chip set" mean ? thanks / Eduardo

Switched Linux distros to Suse 10.1; outboard hard drive no longer accessible

Folks, I've just switched from Ubuntu to Suse 10.1. An outboard USB hard drive (Maxtor 300 GB) no longer seems to respond to mount/umount commands (as root), although it did under Ubuntu. I'm trying to find a way to recover it without losing the data on board (it's my backup). Suse 10.0 Getting more screensavers in Gnome (OpenGL)

Hi. I´m pretty new to Suse Linux. Is there any one that can tell me where to get good OpenGL screensavers for the Gnome Desktop. A couple of years ago I ran RedHat Linux and already at that time I had much nicer screensavers than I have in my Suse 10.0 Distro. Except for the poor screensavers I realy enjoy Suse 10 so far. Postfix local delivery for certain address, relay for rest?

I have the following situation. The company have a few offices all over the country. They have one hosted email service provider that host thier domain for all offices. Now we have a caching mail server at the largest office, running postfix. IT use fetchmail to download the mail for the people at the office and drop it in local mailboxes. The people then read it from that server via pop3/IMAP. THe email clients also use the caching server to send mail. So local mail is delivered directly and only external mail is relayed outside. The problem now is that mail destined for someone at one of the other branches are bounced by the caching server as no local mailbox exist. (Same domian, so postfix try local delivery) How can I configure postfix to relay mail for those adresses via the external (hosted) mail server? I have been googling and reading posfix docs and so far I have only seen the fallback_relay option, but I set this to the external server, but it still bouces the mails. Any ideas, links, examples please? Latest alsa-packages from packman are broken

Hello! Yesterday packman offered alsa-packages: Update Version: 1.0.12-0.pm.0. These break the sound at least for snd_intel8x0 and via82xx. seq_hw.c:457:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such file or directory So those that feel lucky can try. Those who already updated can revert back using YaST's software-management. I think that zmd-guis do not support any refresh or reverting, just plain install/remove/update. Sven

This is a bit off topic, so feel free to tap Delete now, but i think everyone who uses and writes Free/Open Source Software should take a look at this: http://64.71.152.24/index.html i post it here mainly because of the number of "why won't you answer my question!?!?!" posts, and related immature and unappreciative behaviour which so often pops up here on this list. Reading that page, and the "background" page for that page: http://64.71.152.24/original.html might imbue some appreciation from the non-developers out there who so often DEMAND, without so much as a please or thank you, that FOSS developers solve the users' problems. Bug 199474 - Unable to build a (any) kernel rpm on SuSE-10.1

Because of problems with SuSe's 10.1 rpm package, building any kernel rpm is not possible on SuSE 10.1. Here is microsofts, opps I meant SuSE's, opps I meant NOVELS, response to the problem. hmm .. i just talked with one of our kernel maintainers, make rpm is not supported. but maybe it would be smart to say it when call make rpm and exit ... Mark

What are .ko files

What exactly are .ko files? They seem to be related to modules but aren't actually modules since insmod won't load them. The question arose because I'm trying to get a PCTel internal modem to work. I have two files, pctel.ko and ptserial.ko, in my /lib/modules directory (a couple of levels down). I would guess that those files contain the modules I need, but how do I get the modules loaded? I did lsmod | grep pctel and it came up with nothing, so the modules apparently aren't there yet. Paul
