SuSE 10.1 32bit and 4GB RAM, seen are 3.5GB

Hi, I'm struggeling with the following: My computer, a Dell Optiplex 620 has a Intel P4 XEON HT with 4x 1GB RAM. The kernel sees 3.5 GB only. By default the kernel has HIGHMEM enabled and is set to 64GB. I recompiled the kernel so that it is compiled for 4GB highmem only. Same result. I enabled the hidden CONFIG_EMBEDDED and selected the 3GB/1GB memory split. Same result. It seems, no matter what I do, all I get are the 3.5GB. The funny thing is, a slackware edition was run before on the same machine, and it detected the 4GB. What could I do? (not too keen about installing slackware....) Thanks! Regards, Martin

Catalog not found while installing from CDs

Greetings, Has anybody encountered any sort of problem while installing using CDs. I have the DVD but this old laptop has a cd drive. What happens is that it cannot find the catalog, so I cannot go further... Cheers, Jimmy www.nui.fr

ACPI/thermal problem

HI all, I am running SUSE 10.0 and the following messages appear repeatedly in /var/log/messages: ... I traced this to the fact that acpi thinks the machine is running too hot and is trying to turn on the fan: $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature temperature: 72 C $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/trip_points critical (S5): 100 C passive: 50 C: tc1=4 tc2=3 tsp=60 devices=0xc189f7c0 active[0]: 50 C: devices=0xdffe9cc0 $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/state state: passive However, there is no way that the machine is really at 72 deg. C. There is ample cooling and while running in BIOS setup, it shows less than 40C CPU temp and less than 35C motherboard temp. Clearly the ACPI subsystem is confused about the actual temperature. The machine is a AOpen XC-cube model EZ661-T with a 2.6GHz Pentium 4 and 1GB of memory: http://xc.aopen.com.tw/CubeProduct_01.aspx?Auno=12&mdstyl=25 I _could_ unload the "thermal" kernel module and get around this problem but ideally I'd like to have the proper temperature reading from acpi as well as from lm-sensors. You can see Google did a tremendos job with picasa - which they ported using an embedded wine platforme. Also opera wrote their browser so it could easily be ported to whatever OS and even handhelds. Trouble installing Smart package manager

Hi, My YAST software manager is not responding and hence I was advised to install smart package manager. I am running SUSE 10.1 KDE on a R52 IBM Thinkpad Initially there were 11 packages that were to be installed. 7 were installed and 4 remain. I have even refreshed the source.. but nothing happends Please guide.. YUM to update to KDE 3.5.4 fails

Hi all, I read on the KDE website that's possible to use YUM for updating to version 3.5.4. (YaST gives me even more headaches for this task). It's my first attempt using this package manager but with help of Kyum everything was looking fine... until some dependancies showed up... YUM/Kyum was not able to auto-resolve them, so I went one by one using apt-get ... so far so good. Now I still keep on seeing this error message on YUM/Kyum: *** Error: Missing Dependency: qt3-devel = 3.3.4 is needed by package qt3-devel-32bit but according to the system, it is also OK: # rpm -q qt3-devel qt3-devel-3.3.4-28 So, what am I doing wrong? Hi Michael, I see your points. But, I still have some questions: 1. Currently my concern is implementing Suse for desktop use. Based from your experience, is there any cost for upgrading to a newer version of SLED? Let's say now I use SLED 10. Then SLED 10.1 comes out, is there any upgrading cost? 2. Regarding the Enterprise version of openoffice. I read that it supports Macros from MS Office. If there is a macro virus in the MS Office file, will SLED be infected by it? SuSE 10.0 and Gnome

Hi, I've installed SuSE 10.0 on intel hardware with the defaults. So, I have KDE. I'd like to try Gnome, but I can't figure out how to log into it as a desktop. On my logon screen, it is not one of the choices for an environment. Shouldn't the default install have put it there? If not, how can I install it and try it out? tia, Matt
