SUSE is prone to the same issues (as are all OSs in my experience). Generally speaking, you can get away with minor upgrades.. 10.0 to 10.1 for example, but it's hit and miss. Successful for some and a disaster for others. I usually format / with each new release, and format /home with each major release (eg from 9.x to 10.x) That has worked fairly well..... as long as I haven't gone too crazy with bleeding edge apps :-) BTW, this list has a quirk in that if you simply reply, you do not reply to the list.. instead you send an offlist private email... in case you wonder why.. well it's been hashed and flogged to death here.. and the end of it is... that's the way this list is managed (reasons given include the infinte loop situation where people have vacation responders enabled). So the solution is to either do a reply all and remove the private email address, or use a mail client that is mailing list friendly (eg KMail). GIMP will not start...

Greetings, SUSE Linux 10.0 on an old pentium 400Mhz After the initial setup dialogs on first run, nothing happens. Subsequent starting attempts simply does nothing at all. [SLE] Problem listing directory with vsftpd in suse 10.0

Hi All, I just setup a webserver with ftp support. Right now i can from localhost, i can connect and list directory using FTP. Then when i try to connect from remote site with FTP, i can go thru, but i can't list directory using 'ls'. It always show this : ftp> ls 229 Entering Extended Passive Mode (|||15227|) and got no response whatsoever.. I have open 'ftp ftp-data' in FW_SERVICES_EXT_TCP="80 ftp https ssh ftp-data" This is my /etc/vsftpd.conf write_enable=YES dirmessage_enable=YES ftpd_banner="Welcome to foo FTP service." ls_recurse_enable=YES local_enable=YES anonymous_enable=YES anon_world_readable_only=YES syslog_enable=YES connect_from_port_20=YES ascii_upload_enable=YES ascii_download_enable=YES pasv_enable=YES pam_service_name=vsftpd Why does this happen ? [SLE] Screen Saver Problem

Ever since I upgraded to 10.1, my screen saver has not worked. I don't know why I have taken this long to address the problem, but, anyway, I'd like to get it working again. As far as I can tell, everything is still set up the same as it was in 10.0. If I test it, it works fine, but it just never comes on. Anyone else experienced this problem since migrating to 10.1? [SLE] SuSE 10.1 / hp-toolbox / network printer / cups configuration

Can somebody explain how to make hp-toolbox able to see my network printer, which is an HP 6980 with a built in 802.11 wireless interface, listening on direct printing port 9100? It works fine for printing, and appears in the cups printers list on localhost:631, but hp-toolbox doesn't see it. I think there's a tweak required to the cups configuration to allow hp-toolbox to see the printer, but I can't remember what it is. [SLE] SPAM: Problems with an offline box and 10.1

We have an older computer without net access, on which we had installed 10.0 without too much trouble. Now, we have installed 10.1, and are having no end of trouble. I'd like to try some updates, but I only know how to do it with zen via my broadband net access. What I'd like to do is download the updates onto my net-connected machine, copy them onto CD's, and update the other computer that way (one of the motives is to hopefully get a driver for the ancient winmodem in that machine). Is this possible, and how could I do it? Neither of us is expert enough to handle this independently; we need zen, or smart, or ... [SLE] Cannot get wireless EVDO card (Merlin S620) to work in SUSE 10.1

I have a Sprint broadband PCMCIA card (Merlin S620), and I am running SUSE 10.1. I have seen some web notes about using modprobe and ppp to get it to work, but these procedures don't work on SUSE 10.1. I have registered the card and it does work under Windows. I tried using ndiswrapper. It did not work. I found two .inf files from WinXp install CD: nwusbmdm.inf nwusbser.inf. The ndiswrapper command ran without errors, but did not show "hardware present". Also, when I insert the card, it does not cause any new entries in the "lspci" output. However, I still get the kernel message: pccard: CardBus card inserted into slot 0 The lsusb command does not show any new entries after the card is inserted. I have tried the recommended "modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1410 product=0x1110". It has no effect. Some directions suggest looking at /proc/bus/usb/devices, but in suse 10.1, that file does not exist. Any ideas on how to get 10.1 to see this device? Thanks!!
