[SLE] can I convert a dvd to mpeg, avi. . .

Is there anyway I can convert DVD's (movies) into something I can edit? Or is there a way of editing them as is? I can get them onto the hard drive disk and see them with Mplayer and I've tried Main Actor to edit them but I only get the first 2 seconds of the dvd. I've tried googling but got bogged down with the technicalities of the vocabulary people use. [SLE] CUPS and multiple enet ports

SuSE 10.0 and 10.1 I am having somewhat of a problem with CUPS. I have 3 enet ports. One is actually connected to a real network (local 10.10.10.xx) . On that network are various network printers configured for direct tcp printing. The other 2 ports are configured also with internal ip addresses like 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.20.1. They are not used for any network. Each are directly connected to an external piece of hardware and operate via software in promiscuous mode. The problem I'm having is that the cupsd is sending broadcast frames out on these other 2 cards. It is not a good thing because the piece of hardware on the other end of the cable does not know to throw those packets away. Looking at cupsd.conf I see the following: # # BrowseInterval: the time between browsing updates in seconds. Default # is 30 seconds. # # Note that browsing information is sent whenever a printer's state changes # as well, so this represents the maximum time between updates. # # Set this to 0 to disable outgoing broadcasts so your local printers are # not advertised but you can still see printers on other hosts. # #BrowseInterval 30 Setting this BrowseInterval to 0 stops all of it. Even on the enet card connected to the local network that I don't really want to mess with. What is the proper way to stop cupsd from sending broadcast packets out on these other 2 enet cards? [SLE] Garmin GPS Kernel Module Stability Problems?

I have a proprietary cable from garmin that is male serial on one end and the other end jacks into the weird socket on top of my handheld gps. So I bought a serial->usb cable from RS. It came with a driver for winbloze and it works fine with netstumbler. I'm having problems getting SUSE to see it though. I thought about buying a new cable since I read some posts on eham.com about ham operators having trouble with the RS usb->serial cable. But I don't want to give up on this cable yet, because I spent ~$40 on it and I think some people have been successful getting it to work in Linux. I know, I should have done my research first and found a converter that was known-good for Linux, but I'm an impatient padawan and have much to learn. And I'd rather figure this one out since I'll learn the inner-workings of SUSE/Linux that much better in the process. I've got plenty of time, but if anyone can chime in and help it would be much appreciated. [SLE] Files modified while copying from USB-card

Hello all! I have this script that copies all files from my digital camera into a new folder upon execution. But now and again (Not always) i get an error like: cp: skipping file `/media/usbdisk/dcim/100pentx/imgp0099.jpg', as it was replaced while being copied The card is automounted and not touched while the script is ran. So why is the filesystem on the card touched and (apparently) changed? I'm _trying_ to use my Garmin Etrex Venture with SUSE 10.1, but I bought a usb-serial cable from the shack and I haven't yet been able to figure out what I need to do to get that working. So far, I've tried booting up with the usb-serial attached and the gps powered on and ready to navigate, hoping SUSE would detect it and load the appropriate modules. No luck. I looked at usbview but it didn't show any devices. An error appears saying it can't open /proc/bus/usb/devices and to verify that usb is compiled into my kernel and that usb modules are loaded and that the usbdevfs is mounted. I was hoping that this would all be done already, but I guess I'll have to verify everything before I know for sure. I did try modprobe usbserial, to no apparant avail. I'm trying to get my gps working with gpsdrive, btw, and later with kismet and maybe some astronomy software. I haven't had much luck finding any helpful guides through google (regarding my specific usb-serial cable as pertains to configuration in Linux) so I'd appreciate any help if there are any gurus in this area on list. Until these past few days, this system has been extremely reliable and stable, so something appears to have happened, and the addition of this new hardware coincides with the onset of the symptoms. I'm running under SuSE 10.0 with the latest kernel (2.6.13-15.10-smp) on a Pentium 4-based Intel motherboard system. So I'm wondering if anyone else is using a device handled by the "garmin_gps" kernel module and if so, have they encountered any stability problems related to it? Thanks. [SLE] Always zmd timeout error during save after modify the installation source in yast2.

Hello, list, I am a little puzzle in this situations. I have three suse installations. Two are SuSE 10.1 One is SuSE 10.0 There are the same problem in the three installations. After i modify the installation sources then want to save it in yast, the saving processing will take more than ten minutes, then give me a "timeout" error. I could not remember the details error message, it maybe "failed to save zmd". The same problem on all the three installation. Each installation has some internet installation sources. Such as packman, lcoal ftp, etc.. I think it should be some problems in my side, but i really don't know what's wrong with my installations. [SLE] 9.3 Online Update to kernel 2.6.11.4-21.12 KDM problem???

Just did the latest online kernel update, and now KDM hangs on bootup. My second GRUB option of kernel -2.6.16.18 still launches KDM and onward without any problem. (I'm not config'd right for SuSE with this kernel, so I mainly by default use the SuSE issued kernel (2.6.11.4-21.11).) After reading the traffic re SuSE module issues in 10.1, was wondering if this was SuSE induced or perhaps just a defective download...??? YAST reported that it installed the kernel patches OK... Has anyone else experienced difficulty with the latest 9.3 Online Update? [SLE] Printing from Acrobat

I use Acrobat 7.0.1 under SuSE 10.0 I can't print figures or maps from the Acroread program. When I click on "print", the printer shows that it is collecting data and then just stops. I can't print anything else on that printer until I reboot! Is there some way I can make this work? -- Best regards, Dennis J. One showstopper down..... (10.1)

Damn... gotta find something else to bitch about. I've been complaining about not being able to find a copy of the slamr.ko module which is needed to drive the winmodem in my Thinkpad X30. Never did find one but I found a solution... much better too. Having spent two days on this project and googling at least 20 times for "slamr Suse" and such, I finally came across someone who tried a different approach, and although in what I read he still had a minor problem, I thought I would give it a go. The old solution was to: modprobe slamr slmodemd & where slamr was the module that access the hardware (low-level) and slmodemd is the piece that provides the high-level functions of the modem. The solution (at least for me?) modprobe snd-intel8x0m slmodemd -alsa -c USA hw:1 & which accomplishes the same thing and is used in the same fashion. Works like a charm. And I suspect it might work for winmodems from other vendors too if you first load the appropriate module for that vendors chipset and then run slmodemd. Can't prove that but it seems reasonable. In any event, this is a much better solution than the original. But I still think Novell pulled the plug too soon on a lot of people with similar or other problems with non-gpl code and with no notification of what was going to be happening. I've spent at least 5 full days shooting problems with 10.1. No one can tell me that it is a super, easy thing to install. It's been a lot of dog-work and sleuthing from someone who has 45 years of computing experience and it took far too much work to accomplish. So there..... BLEAH!!!!
