[SLE] can I convert a dvd to mpeg, avi. . .
Is there anyway I can convert DVD's (movies) into something I can edit? Or is there a way of editing them as is? I can get them onto the hard drive disk and see them with Mplayer and I've tried Main Actor to edit them but I only get the first 2 seconds of the dvd. I've tried googling but got bogged down with the technicalities of the vocabulary people use. I usually use avidemux2 for editing video files. Be sure to install all available codecs. Add Packmans repository in order to accomplish this.

Both MPlayer and Kaffeine work with unencrypted DVD's. For the encrypted ones, be sure to install libdvdcss.

Hi Rui Excellent advice. Thanks. Packman selected various other files to install when I chose avidemux including a codec rpm. Are these the codecs you mention? Or are there others I'd need? Basically, all I want to do is take the mini dvd out of my Sony Handycam and 1. Cut clips from it and 2. turn the clips into something I can put on the 'net for download. I'm slowly wading through the docs but do you know of a step by step which will help me get started with this? Probably yes. But you can always search and, if it is a codec, install it. If what you need is mpeg to mpeg than definitely yes.

Try http://www.doom9.org/ . Also try avidemux2 home page. http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ Both of them have nice tutorials.
TIA Steve.

How do you transfer the files? If these are commercial (encrypted) dvds, you will need libdvdcss2. Use mplayer's --dumpstream option, this produces a large streem.dump file, which is actually the mpeg program stream from the dvd. You can rename it and use whatever program you like to edit it. I prefer avidemux2.
