RANT: Advantages of Dual Core

I've been a bit amazed over the years, of the intense "updates" that usually are run in the cron, during the night times. Several times, I've been playing games, or just browsing the net on my desktop, during early morning hours, when my computer has gone to sleep when running the cron update. Usually this is a period, of a whole hour, and sometimes more. I've often mentioned it, and despite that this function is reduntant function from the old batch time hours of Unix, nobody has bothered removing it from the desktop linux environment. However, now when I write this, my machine is doing this horrible update of all manuals, which nobody reads anymore. And rebuilding the structure of the entire files system (exageration, running several recursive finds), for what purpose only geniuses can figure. But I've finally been able to work on my machine while it was doing this. On all other occasions, even with a AMD64 3000+, my machine went to sleep ... and I could hardly browse the desktop during this hour of nonsense. But now, yes now I CAN ... but it took a desktop with a dual core CPU to do it. Go figure :-) AMEN!

lol, next time you buy (sic!) something which doesn't work properly (lets say you can use 3 of 5 gears in a car only), keep in mind, moaning is useless, it'll be fixed...somehow...somewhen. beati pauperes spiritu eh?! Don't get me wrong, I like 10.1, the more I use it, the more I like it, but it certainly cannot be called final release. Sudden Breakdown in Gnumeric

Hi, I use a Gnumeric spreadsheet to log my bicycle training. Two days ago (Saturday) I made an entry, the latest in a long series. Yesterday (Sunday) when I launched Gnumeric to make another entry it hung. The window displayed, but was mostly blank. The placement of various GUI elements can be discerned by different colors, though no text or other drawing was present, and the row and column headers regions were "transparent" (the desktop shows through). There is neither CPU usage nor memory size accumulation. I'm looking for one of two things: 1) A clue about this specific problem from someone who's encountered it already 2) Techniques to use in diagnosing the problem. I did update a few packages between the last successful invocation of Gnumeric and the one that failed, but they were just routine updates of packages posted to Guru's RPM or Packman (via YaST Software Management), and I don't recall which packages were affected. Is there some way to see a chronologically ordered and / or annotated listing of package installations and updates via YaST? I ran "rpm -V -a" but nothing in the output stands out. However, I must admit that I'm not very familiar with everything it's trying to tell me. I'm running SuSE 10.0 on an late-model HT Pentium CPU. I've applied all the YOU-provided updates except the latest kernel update, which I need to hold until it's convenient for me to reboot, do some hardware maintenance and rebuild my VMware setup, as is required whenever a new kernel is released. Did you sync first? Is the gear in question ATA/SATA/RAID in any way? How did you do your partitions? maybe you are doing a reset right at the wrong time? I been seeing quite a few reiserfsck on this end. I am running 10.0 on an athlon 64 laptop in 32 bit, use a 60G and had Yast barf on me twice. The rpm tables got corrupted. Had reiserfs errors, then had to do a rpm -rebuilddb. Got two good saves but I may yet lose my data. I kill my laptop with LimeWire and the dvd players. Oh well. SuSE 9.3 2.6.11.4-21.11-smp & SMBFS

I just updated the kernel using YaST2 in SuSE 9.3 2.6.11.4-21.11-smp and am no longer able to using mount -t smbfs commands. Is there an easier way to recompile the kernel to include this support or am I going to have to get the src and do it manually? Suse 10 : Bug in ypcat ?

Hello, I am having a wrong output using "ypcat passwd | wc -l" on Suse 10.0 I got "248" entries. But in fact I got more than that. On Solaris 9, or Mandriva 2006 no problem. Even with Suse8.2 I got no problems. Is this a bug ? Is there a config file that could limit the number of results of ypcat on Suse 10 ? I got the good answer using "getent". Wow, nice (official?) attitude. Anyhow, I can't understand his frustration. What are constructive contributions? I daresay anything but code snippets is to be considered non-constructive. The everlasting "stop moaning" comments aren't that helpful either, are they? Many months ago, I sent Linksys support an e-mail request concerning Model BEFSX41 dropping UDP data grams. They sent a firmware upgrade called "BEFSX41_v1.52.4_beta1_002_code". I'm sure this has been brought up once or twice - but nevertheless. I've been sort of getting used to working with rug, but it is INCREDIBLY slow, bordering on useless.
