I run a small(ish) business myself, and for installations, booting off the USB-stick is all we need. It's easy and requires no CDROM. Even some (in business terms) quite ancient systems - 3-4 years old - will boot off USB. But you probably meant an installation option that would allow workstations to boot off a central server? With an NFS-mounted root filesystem? Where your workstations would boot with PXE or perhaps off a floppy or USB-stick. We have a 16-node cluster that works like that. For a few ordinary workstations, I think it is overkill, especially in a small business. The overhead in management and setup is too much, plus you'd need to keep the right sort of IT skills around. > Large businesses can take the time to use the current systems, but > smaller can not. There is no big-brother IT-dept to dictate that all workstations must be the same colour, and run the same software. USB printer touble

I have an HP psc 2355 Multifunction printer attached to a SuSE10 box. Installation from Yast works fine but then after a while the printer stops responding. What seems to happen is that SuSE discovers the same printer again and it appears as "not configured". Then when the same printer occurs twice in Yast SuSE seems to be confused and the printer doesn't work. I use cups for printing. What can I do to have my printer keep working?

cron not recognizing changes to /etc/cron.d files

I'm running SUSE 9.3 on two machines, a 64 bit installation at home and a 32 bit installation at work. Both machines are up to date with all YOU updates and are configured similarly. The work machine doesn't seem to be recognizing changes made to cron files in /etc/cron.d, that is, a RELOAD of the changed file never happens and doesn't show in the log. I basically have to rccron restart to get the cron daemon to use the new file. The home machine does recognize changes, a RELOAD will take place within a minute or so after saving the changed file back to /etc/cron.d I've checked ownership (root) and permissions (600) on both boxes, they are the same, so I'm looking for ideas on where to look next to figure out what is causing the work machine to not see the changes made to /etc/cron.d files. Any ideas will be appreciated, I'm pretty much stumped right now. du with head command not returning results as expected

Hello, Using "du -cks * |sort -rn |head -20" to get a list of the top 20 directories with the most amount of bloat. This has always worked well in the past, but now I get a listing saying certain directories don't exist, which is completely false. <snip> du: `User10': No such file or directory du: `User11': No such file or directory du: `User12': No such file or directory du: `User14': No such file or directory du: `User15': No such file or directory du: `User16': No such file or directory du: `User17': No such file or directory 1802956 total 1802956 User1 If I remove the head command a listing of all the directories appear as expected. Using Suse 9.3, kernel 2.6.11.4-21.11-smp. Is the 'head' command corrupt? I get he same results using another 9.3 server. Many thanks in advance. James

WIRELESS CARD SET UP

My laptop has got the following wire and wireless cards: CLEVO/KAPOK RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet Configured with DHCP. Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG MiniPCI Adapter Configured with DHCP. We could successfully connect to the wire network although we were not successful with the wireless connection here at FNAL. Since all laptops running Windows can easily use the wireless network in here, we are wondering whether we are missing some parameters setup in the card configuration procedure. Please, can someone help with that ? Thank you in advance. Maura

bug report : save problem with OpenOffice.org

hi, I have a problem with the version of OpenOffice.org that comes with Suse Linux 10.1. The problem is with the save as dialog - if you accidently select a file that exists, it doesn't prompt you if you want to over write the file or not. This appears to be a problem with the KDE file dialog integration of OpenOffice.org. Where would I post that problem? I know that a bug should be filed for the KDE integration of OpenOffice.org, but what about making sure that the fix gets included with OpenSuse 10.1 final release? Thanks, Tim

Updating stand alone system without an Internet cnx

Hi all, How does Linux determine what updates are available for a system, does it check the installed software and patches, or is this unique key generated and stored on the system? I illustrate with an example below: PC 1 = no internet connection, unable to be networked PC 2 = internet connection enabled, able to be networked All installed systems need to get updates from the internet, whether they be program or security updates. Is there a system value that is generated by PC 1 that would be unique to it? Could this value then be retrieved and put into a web page on PC 2 and all the updates for PC 1 could be downloaded and burnt to a CD. I would then like to use this burnt CD to update PC 1, as though it was connected to the internet. This update CD would include all the software and security patches that PC 1 requires. This CD would then update the system from its initial install or from the last time an update CD was used. Folks, I've had to reinstall SuSE 10.0 on my Toshiba Satellite 1905-303S. Previously, the machine automatically picked up either the USB drive (Maxtor One Touch II 300 gb) or my iRiver mp3 player via usb without any prompting from me. Now, however, when I plug either in, SuSE doesn't see it. When I do an fdisk -l /de/sda, it returns: /dev/sda doesn't have a valid partition table. When I "hotplug" the drive and run dmesg, SuSE clearly registers the drive, but, again it shows an "unknown partition table," then some interesting entries: FAT: bogus logical sector size 48 VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev sda. VFS: Can't find an ext2 filesystem on dev sda. VFS: Can't find a Minix or Minix V2 filesystem on device sda. I used the Yast2 partitioner to see what it could tell me about what already may be existing on the two drives. When I aimed it at the Maxtor, the entire disk read, gulp, "free." The iRiver, by contrast, shows an existing FAT32. Why do I think I can guess the answer to this already? :-/ If I've inadvertantly trashed the Maxtor, any recommendations on the best file format to use to partition it? Sigh... date problem

I tried to send a message from my Linux machine, but it may have been rejected because of the date problem. The machine seems to want to live in the future. A couple of months ago, it thought it was 2010. Now it thinks it's 2012. Someone told me then how to reset the date, but I've forgotten, and the man page did not set me straight.
