Agreed, this mailing list in particular is all about having a problem, hoping to find someone whom had a similar problem and fixed it. This is what makes Linux just that. We're open source, an operating system not based out of a corporate setting, but just average guys whom like computing. We hail from all over the globe and these mailing lists are meant for us to think together and come up with solutions to problems. If you ask a question, you'll get an answer hopefully. If not a direct one, you'll get a suggestion. If one fails to put up all the info, we'll ask you to check things. If I went to a mechanic and said my car won't start, they'd ask stuff like "when did you last check it", "how many miles since last oil change" "When did it start?". If I don't give it to him in the first place, he'll have to ask to get it. Otherwise, he really can't help me with that info. Now imagine the mechanic just giving advice, not actually touching the car, you'd have to give him a lot more info. You rarely get instant gratification on these mailing lists cause solving these problems is a process. I don't think you can expect to go to a mailing list such as this or any linux mailing list and expect an easy answer. When you get defensive about things, that only makes things worse. By asking a question here, you admit that you have no clue as to what's wrong and you are also acknowledging that anyone whom replies knows what they are talking about. It's not that we are trying to be egotistical, this is just how it is, you don't know, we do. One day, you may get in the position where you know something someone else doesn't. We are all here to help each other but you can't be helped if you won't listen to advice given. You also need to cooperate and realize this is a process and we need info and a lot of trial and error. This is Linux, that's how it works many times. You don't like it, go to Windows and enjoy your viruses. [opensuse] ZenUpdater/installer/Smart v. Opensuse Updater v. Yast

Ok so the "default" update/software mechanism in opensuse 10.2 is ZMD/Smart. So what is this thing I see in there called "opensuse updater"? Does it run off the same database as ZMD???? what about using Yast for software updates/installation? [opensuse] new issue in SuSE 10.2: "Down" and "End" key always bring up "computer" panel

I got this really disturbing problem after upgraded to SuSE 10.2: whenever I press the "down" arrow key or the "End" key, it always make SuSE pop up "Computer" panel (the panel that look like start menu in Windows). I hit "down" or "End" button once every 50 seconds, that means every hour I get annoyed by it more then 60 times, I am very close to throw this stupid damn computer out of window. I checked shortcut key configuration and it seems "Computer Panel" is defined as "Alt+F1", then I changed it to some other shortcut key, but still, hit 'down' or 'End' bring up this panel. The more stupid behavior is if I hit "Windows" key, which is used to bring up Start Menu on Windows, the "Computer Panel" do not pop up, so it looks SuSE think 'Down' and 'End' are actually two "Windows" bottons. But still, there is one place 'Down' button does work, that is when I have clicked a drop-down selection list (any drop-down selection list will do, e.g. Firefox's address bar's drop down menu, Evolution's drop-down menu, any application's menu bar's menu). I open gnome shotcut define dialog box, define a shortcut key for an item, and when asked to press a key, I press "Down" and it shows that the short cut key I defined is "Down", that means, gnome *knows well* I pressed *Down*, not the stupid windows key. [opensuse] SOAPpy doesnt compile on openSuse 10.2

[opensuse] OpenSUSE 10.2 Laptop runs hot after resume

After upgrading to OpenSUSE 10.2 my HP nx 6125 can finaly hibernate and resume. But I now notice that once I have resumed from a hibernate the machine runs very hot. Normally the CPU temperature is between 40 and 50 deg Celcius. After a resume, it ranges between 65 and 85, averaging around 70. THe machine is not doing any more work than before, the CPU usage is on average 5% If I reboot the machine then it runs at 40-50 again with same CPU usage. Does anybody have similar experience? Any ideas what could cause it? I'd like to thank all of you who have answered posts of mine to this mailing list (before it renamed). For the record i was waiting 10.2 and then bang Novell did a sco like licensing deal with the evil borg persons. Linux does not mean 'i support microsoft with money' So I'm moving to new distro. Whether suse/novell consider us a hobby user is not important but supporting microsoft is not the deal i signed on with Suse before Novell bought it. While i may not be supporting the ms deal if say i bought disks for 10, it's the thought that my loyalty is misplaced now. I can do better and mod perl 2 excites me. [opensuse] Upgrade experiences 10.0 -> 10.2 ?

I've seen only a few posts on successful upgrades from 10.0 to opensuse 10.2, anyone have any further experiences/words of wisdom before I "take the plunge"? Hey, so I just joined into this convo and you know what, I am all for OpenSUSE. I am not sure what's up with Novell and Microsoft and how that will effect us, but I feel as if it'll help. Let's face it, there are a lot of things that don't work well with Linux especially in a corporate setting. I want to see Linux and Windows be able to work (of course, I'll use Linux). I am not an MS fan but I don't like the fact that my OpenOffice can't open the MS .docx yet. I also hate having to get third party software to make Linux and Windows servers and management work. As for your music, it's the same problem with Ubuntu. In Dapper and Edgy, you have to download extra xine codecs off of their multiverse repository. You can't just get mp3 support out of the box. I think there is something larger than Microsoft and Novell going on with these formats and patents. I don't think it's rational to get mad at Novell over our misfortunes. It's just a Linux thing, not a Novell thing. We all need to work together if we want to see Linux blow up onto the mainstream map. Once that happens, we'll see more Linux drivers and apps.
