[opensuse] what are the pro/cons of installing the nforce nvidia drivers with opensuse 10.1

Greetings, is there any experience out there on installing the nvidia nforce 4 drivers on opensuse 10.1? would that bring complications with device management? would that bring complications with the kernel upgrade? would zen be able to note that the propriatary drivers are isntalled? all input is appreciated! my system is an msi k8n n4 diamond 3500 64bit mono core. 1gb ram 2x ide 60gb drives 4x sata 160gb drives dvd combo dds (20gb) tape drive adaptec scsi (for take drive) intel network cards. -- Regards -RP- ___________________________ If computers were made in heaven, would they be perfect? ___________________________

Unable to boot after fresh install, can boot from installation media, SLES8.

G'day, I have a problem where a new SLES8 installation fails to boot and hangs just prior to either the grub boot loader prompt, during the prompt or at the Grub loading stage 2 prompt. I did initially manage to install the O/S and run YOU all without fault however I decided to reboot before installing the required app' and this is when the problem first appeared. I am trying to install SLES8 on an HP DL380 with a SMART Array Controller. I have since blown away and reconfigured the array controller configuration several times, including after a firmware upgrade. I have performed several clean installations of SLES8 and have still not been able to boot normally. As I use the array controller I have found that I have to use the SP4 CD to start the installation to see the disks and I can easily boot to the installed O/S using the same media. We have another server of identical hardware running SLES 8 in a full production capacity without fault. I have searched forums, knowledge bases, etc and have not found anything that has provided a remedy. Thanks in advance for any assistance provided. Partition suddenly going into read-only status

I recently had my SuSE 10.0 installation have its root partition go into read-only mode - It was proposed that my disk is going bad. I rebooted and everything is fine after the reboot. No, nothing changed. It just suddenly went into read-only mode. Any ideas? Thanks, LDB

[opensuse] VA721 Monitor

I'm trying to set up my monitor with opensuse 10.1. I'm having a little problem with my monitor. I have the ViewSonic VA721 monitor. When i run Yast to configure my monitor does not matter what setting i do i get the following error out of range. If i change it to another view sonic drive the screen mostly on the left and i cannot move my mouse to the left. is there something I'm doing wrong when trying to set up my monitor. I've attached the hwinfo and a screen capture of the settings for my card. -- Bill Nash

After subscribing to this list a few weeks ago I have noticed several things interesting about it: * It generates more messages by far that any other list. Thank God I have a decent email client. * It serves to remind me daily of the nature of puter geeks (I have been one since 1979), which is to always tell someone how to build a watch when they ask for the time. * Along that line is the generation of massive amounts of chaff which has to be sifted through to get to the answer, sort of like picking fly shit out of pepper. * I view all this as some kind of late-in-life penance for the sins of my youth. * In spite of all the above, I am slowly amassing a filtered list of worthwhile reference data that is actually useful and I just want to say "Thank you" to all of you who are helping in the effort. Daylight Saving time change?

Hi all, This seems really silly, but Daylight Saving time is ended, and I can't work out how to get my computer to notice. I thought it would have just known, as has happened in the past, but it's still concienciously showing MDT time rather than MST. I tried to use Yast to correct this, and the only thing on offer to me are other major timezones, nothing for Daylight saving. It might be part of the puzzle, though I don't quite see how, that I run an ntp client (because my laptop's clock is dreadfully inaccurate--I suspect a failing CMOS support battery or something). Apache error pages

SuSE 10.0 Apache 2.0.54 I'm trying to adapt the existing error pages so that they conform to my 'house style'. To do this, I have incorporated the css references and want to include a couple of php files. My server already hosts php scripts in their own right. Into the bottom.html file (/usr/share/apache2/error/include), I've added these two lines, both pointing to existing, but trivial (for testing) files: <p>htm: </p> <p>php: </p> htm works but php gives the error '[an error occurred while processing this directive]'. I've tried adding the following into /etc/apache2/mod_mime-defaults.conf but this does not seem to do anything: AddType text/html php AddOutputFilter INCLUDES php AddHandler type-map php Am I thinking along the right lines for adding the php files and in which file should I add these (or similar) lines? BTW: I looked at re-writing the error pages completely, but decided that it would be better, because of the multi-lingual capability, to adapt the existing pages to fit with my main site. TIA John
