One command I miss from my old Unix days is the ability to add swap dynamically. That is swap to a file. Some of the Unix's have a swap command and you can name a file and the size you wish and swap will start using it. This can be pretty handy for someone who doubles their RAM after and OS has been installed and wants swap to follow the yellow brick road even if the machine never swaps. I did a man on swap but nothing came back!

Update Problem

Just reinstalled Suse 10.1 because Xen 3.0.3 compile screwed up my machine, now, suse updater or Yast online update come up with error: Transaction failed: Need media 1: File ./rpm/x86_64/binutils-2.16.91.0.5-23.5.x86_64.rpm not found on media: http://ftp.kddilabs.jp/Linux/packages/SuSE/suse/update/10.1 I checked the website and sure enough, there are no rpms for X86_64. Running the online update setup again, still comes up with the same error. Where is the file I can edit to change the mirror and what mirror schould I use (I am in Taiwan)? Art

How do I block certain senders in Postfix?

Further to my post a few weeks or so ago, how do I block emails from being accepted by postfix. The emails in particular are from one of 2 different IP addresses. I suppose I could block only those 2, or perhaps the entire range if need be. I read a bit on this in the docs, but am unsure if I should make a "hash" for it, or use canonical, and if so, how. I do have a hash for check_recipient_access which is working great. But I don't know how to block a particular IP address for a sender. I'm running Suse 10.0, mostly standard postfix. How to install Posgresql8 on SLES9 ?

How to install Posgresql8 on SLES9 ? I am trying to install Postgresql 8.1.4 on SLES 9. My SLES machine currently has the SP2 and SDK installed. The SLES9 machine also already has Postgresql 7.4.13 installed on it. I found some Postrgresql 8 RPMS for SLES 9 here: http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/suse/projects/postgresql/postgresql-8.1.4/s… and copied them to the directory /var/pos_814 Then I found some more instructions here: http://en.opensuse.org/Creating_YaST_Installation_Sources Which led me to enter these commands cd /var/pos_814 genIS_PLAINcache -f -r . gzip genIS_PLAINcache The gzip command gets an error because the file does not exist. In YAST I went to "Change Source of Installation" and added the "local directory" on dir:///var/pos_814// dir:///var/pos_814/ I didn't see any new Postgresql entries in the "Install and Remove Software" screen. So I tried some more things. This entry did not work either: on dir:///var/pos_814/ dir:///var/pos_814 I also tried running gzip on the "IS_PLAINcache" which turned it into IS_PLAINcache.gz, but it still did not work. Hopefully I will be able to add Postrgresql 8 to yast, and then have either the option of upgrading 7.4, or replacing it with 8. Any suggestions? I'm kind of new at SLES and Postgresql. Thanks!

Volume Controls show up but don't work

Hi all ~ My volume control (and the full kmix program) does not seem to affect the volume of many applications, including realplayer and other media players. Also, the application volume controls also don't always work... Any ideas? Using SuSE 10.1 on an HP Pavillion dv6105us laptop with centronix high-definition audio. [opensuse] Verifying copied files - Global Settings and singular command switch

In DOS there was the ability to verify a singular files integrity by using chkdsk c:/file.dos......The result indicated if the file integrity was so. There was also the ability to set in the Autoexec.bat set verify=ON - which made sure that EVERY file that you copied you did not need to use the verify option C:\file.dos C:\temp\file.dos /v My questions are 1. Is there a global set verify=on in Linux? 2. Is there the ability to verify a single files integrity as above with a similar command such as chkdsk 3. How do I copy a file at the command line and include a verify option. The reason I ask is that I recently lost my home directory and I had KDAR backing up the /home directory every week to an NFS drive. When I came to restore the archive the files header was reported to be corrupted. Also as a backup I copied with Konqueror the /home directory to an NFS drive and some of the files are aslo now not readable due corruption. I have made an Enhancement report to both Konqueror and KDAR that they include a verify option like most backup programs. Over many years I have seen backups unable to be restored because verify was not turned on. Now its happened to me. I understand the file system in Linux is far superior in its disk I/O but I dont want to waste time backing up if I cannot ensure the files are intact. The current backup GUI's do not include a verify option and the only one that does 'cpio do not hav a GUI and due to the complexity of options available it is rather unfriendly. I have made a wish list item in opensuse to for someone to write a GUI for cpio which will also address a request to have the ability to backup to tape. regards to all from down under in OZ Scott

postfix configuration

I'm trying to modify my postfix configuration so that it will modify the sending domain. I've done this on my red hat box by setting the following in /etc/postfix/main.cf: main.cf:myhostname = www.3times25.net main.cf:mydomain = 3times25.net When I do the same on my SuSE box, it does not work. I know that there is a /etc/sysconfig/postfix configuration file on SuSE that does not exist on red hat, but I can't figure out if something there is overriding my settings in /etc/postfix/main.cf Anyone have any suggestions/insight? -- Until later, Geoffrey Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Benjamin Franklin

[opensuse] hibernation issue

Hi, I am trying to install opensuse 10.2 beta on a toshiba satellite laptop (it is refurbished, so i cannot find the model name). Installation completes smoothly, but i cannot find any hibernation command on the desktop (kde has been installed). Kernel is 2.6.18. Should i patch it, to get the hibernation feature?
