[opensuse] custom liveDVD: can not find the CD I was booted from

Hi, while booting with a custom liveDVD (created using livecd project in forge.novell.com) it fails showing the following message: can not find the CD I was booted from It boots with the cd (actually an iso file). Why it says that? I tried to manually create the iso using the files at the SuSE10.0LiveDVD, but it did not work either. I created the iso with the command: mkisofs -r -sort ../sorted-CD -no-emul-boot -b isolinux.bin -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -A "00" -V "00" -p feedback(a)suse.de -publisher "SUSE Linux Products GmbH" -o ../outer2.iso -pad . OOo 2.X Bug?

Hi, Using OOo 1.x Writer, when I inserted the field Insert-> Field-> Other-> DocInformation-> Modified-> Date, updated the field each time I saved the file. In OOo 2.X does nothing. The field doesn't change, remains empty. But, in this version, if I insert the field Insert-> Field-> Other-> DocInformation-> Created-> Date, the field changes each time I save the file. The interesting think is that the help says: Modified: Inserts the name of the author, and the date, or the time of the last save. Created Inserts the name of the author, and the date, or the time when the document was created. Did anyone had the same results? -- Regards, Lívio Cipriano

Laptop Test Under 10.1

Since I've been hearing many issues with the laptop functionality under 10.1, I thought I'd give it a test this day. I'd been using SUSE on my laptop since I bought it back in July last year. It has been running 9.3, 10.0 and 10.1. Many of you may remember my issues with 10.1 updates, which were solved with SMART. I've been running happy for the past few weeks. This morning before work, I fired up my Dell 600m laptop. It booted in about 40 seconds (about half the time it took to boot 9.3) and immedietly connected to my WPA encrypted WiFi network. I'd never been able to get this to work prior to 10.1. Prior to going to work, I suspended to disk. At work, I turned on the laptop after plugging in the ethernet cable. The laptop resumed in about 20 seconds and immedately the corporate network was found and announced in the taskbar. I worked on the laptop on and off during the day, without shutting it down. At the end of the day, I suspended again and went home. Upon arriving at home, I turned the laptop on again. 20 seconds later, I was up and running and the WiFi was correctly connected to my network. (There are at least three other networks in my vicinity, two of which are unencrypted. 10.0 and previous would usually connect to one of these and not my network.) In my opinion, three of the most important items to me as a laptop owner - speed, WiFi funcionality and suspend - are working as I'd expect. Of course, I'd expect the rest of the system to "just work" and it does as well. aarrgg: yast lost my repo data!

Hi again! i just came across a most hideous bug in yast and i'm looking for a workaround: If you open the Installation Source yast tool while you're not online, it will warn you that it can't contact remote repos (of course). That's fine. However, if you then click "Abort", which warns you that "all changes will be lost", the remote repos are still removed from your list (as i assume they are if you click "finish" instead of "abort"). So much for "all changes will be lost"! How about "all remote repos will be lost"? Can someone tell me what file(s) i can back up in case yast does this to me again? It is a very slow process to add repositories (sometimes i have to wait up to 5 minutes before a repo is added), and i don't at all appreciate having to re-add them more than necessary. This warning concerns printpal, a supplier of replacement printer cartidges and ink-jet ink. There is a "choice" of getting a 15% discount on future purchases. The trick is that they want your credit card number, and in the fine print, it says they will bill you monthly for the "privilege," whether you buy anything or not. Obviously this is a scam, altho their product seems to work. Watch out! --doug

getting sound card back?

Hi, all! i'm still trying to get my new PC up and running, and just came across a really weird error in the sound config module of yast... i have an on-board SB400/AC97 sound card from which i'm not getting any sound. So in the bios i disabled it and plugged in my PCI SB AudioPCI128 card (which works like an Ensonic). The older card has worked for several years in all versions of Suse, and was working yesterday in Suse 10.1 before my machine's main board died, so i know the sound card works. In the yast sound card configuration we see two columns: NUMBER and CARD MODEL. The cards start with number 0 and go up from there. Despite the fact that i had disabled the on-board card in the bios, yast still sees it and gives it the ID of card 0. To get around that, i used the Delete button to remove the card so i could get my Ensonic to have ID 0. Curiously, i then couldn't change any volume levels on the Ensonic card (the volume screen was completely empty except for the Test button). So... i deleted THAT card from yast and rebooted once. Now in yast i see both cards, first the Ensonic, then the on-board SB400, but niether of them have a number next to them. And when i click on one of them, the sound module simply crashes. i tried to be clever and use the ADD button to add a new card. However, after selecting my driver yast says there was an error loading the driver and won't let me continue the setup. i can see, using lsmod, that it DOES load the snd_ens1371 (and related) drivers. If i remove them and re-add an ens1371 card, yast still tells me that there was an error loading the module and that it can't continue, even though the module has demonstrably been loaded. The weirdest part, howver, is these two entries - one for my disabled on-board card and one for my SB PCI card - neither of which have a card ID number, and both of which cause yast to crash when i select EDIT on them. i can't even DELETE them now. They just sit there, mocking me. The BEST doc/howto for 10.1 updates?

Hi, all! This morning my main PC - the household router/gateway/firewall - lost its motherboard. Since i work from home, this was especially tragic. i rushed out and got a cheap PC to replace it - paid only 370 Euros for a box with an AMD Sempron 2800, 1GB of RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD writer, Realtek NIC, and an on-board ATI Radeon. When i got it home, i immediately put my old hard drives in it and found that i couldn't boot from my old installation. Not a big deal - i simply reinstalled Suse 10.1. Getting the Radeon to work right was a PITA, but other than that, no problems. Now... i would LIKE to do some software updates on this box, but i'm not about to start with the headaches i had before with 10.1's updater tools, and therefor i have a simple stock 10.1 installation. i know this has been asked, answered, discussed and cussed many times on this list, and that "the answer" to my question is somewhere in the archives, buried amongst a dozen or more hyperlinks, but... What i would like to ask is: what is THE best, most up-to-date, most accurate HOWTO/doc for replacing the 10.1 update tools with "something else." My main criteria is that i should be able to use Suse repositories for updates (including 3rd-party repos like packman). All i'm looking for is "the single best" link. hostap

I'd like to install hostap under suse 10.1 but, as root, yum install hostap yields nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I dl'd the tarballs from hostap's homepage but I wanted to know if I could install with yum instead. I googled up a link to Novell that said hostap was on dvd1. I've got my installation sources pointed to official suse servers and 10.1 installation media (on suse's mirrors) as well as pacman and some other third party source servers. I really like 10.1, but configuring all these different installation sources seems to be a bit of a PITA. I guess I just wish there were more apps available from the official suse mirrors, rather than having to use other third-party hosts. Maybe there's a better way of accessing source files for different apps that I'm not aware of. I read an article and followed its instructions to set my installations sources to a variety of different servers, but I still have a lot of trouble updating and finding apps that I want. I might just go back to Gentoo on my notebook, I am really missing portage here. But any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks, Steven
