I'm getting hammered by a lot of emails which have different subject lines and a different sender. Kmail displays it in plain text, does not say that it is a html message which can be viewed if you click here but there is html view available if scroll down to the description box, below the email. Clamav does not pick any virus. Spamassassin and bogofilter although set to learn, do not pick them up. (All uptodate). The message of the email starts with something on the lines of: "ListPrice: $550.00 OurPrice: $69.95 YouSave: $480.05 ( 87%) Availability: Available for INSTANT download!" followed by several references to microsoft type products, no links, so I assume you contact the sender (which suggests the email address is valid and not one from a compromised machine). I'm running suse 10.0 OSS on a standalone machine. Using Kmail. (Direct access via kmail to pop and stmp from my isp). Do I set a filter on body or message, containing the listprice etc quote from above, to mark as spam? Or could that compromise some valid emails where I have requested details on say holidays etc from somewhere else? Peter C

Session management error

Hi New to Linux: SuSE 10.0, GNOME 2.12.2, Kernel 2.6.13, single user 32bit desktop Ran a System Update (after installing SynCE rpm as part of a project to sync Thunderbird/Sunbird with my iPAQ) and now, on boot, "gnome-volume-manager" always quits unexpectedly. Similarly, I now cannot run several routines from the desktop that require root privilege e.g. yast or many in GNOME control centre. I can run, and have run, yast2 as su in a terminal even though I get a "Session management error: ...". If I try to log in as root I get: 'Xlib ":0.0" refused by server ... ' (and then the dreaded) 'Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key' message [Note: this is an improvement, for at least now the system will not allow me log in as any user when using the root password ... (which it did until now)] I've Googled "MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1" but a workable solution eludes me ... Can anbody help me with a fix for this problem (... other than a complete rebuild)? Thanks Brian

Firefox with apt-get

Hi Tried to install Firefox with apt-get. "apt-get install MozillaFirefox" But the ver of firefox there is just 1.0.7, is there another way to install the firefox with the apt-get? How can I install it in another way if it is not possible with apt-get? Have tried to just download the compressed file from mozilla.com and have been able to get 1.5 to start but what is the right way to install a program from a compressed file (where do I put it and so on)? Have no knowledge in the world of Linux, but hoping to learn :)..... /Per

Strange behavior in konqueror and kmail

While in the above two programs, pressing the ctrl key brings up many 1/4 inch yellow boxes with different letters in them over the top of the application. Pressing the alt key removes them. Doesn't appear to happen on other apps. I little bit annoying, wondered if it was of concern because often these boxes appear on top of links. Running opensuse 10.0, kde desktop. Peter C

Anyone managed to check epson ink level using the kde printing manager. Seems to require raw mode, but then you can't specify a printer driver! mtink compiles but doesn't run, kink won't compile. Geoff

eth0 now eth1 WTF? Network woes....The saga....[Long]

Mates, I have built a new box for the house, and it is testing my understanding of Linux. It is also testing logic. I know I'm aging, but I have ruled out Alzheimer's. Here is the scoop. When I first installed SuSE 10, the network would come up and it used eth0: Simply /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-id-00:4c:69:6e:75:79 would bring up the Linksys card as eth0. This is how it worked. Then on a subsequent reboot the network doesn't come up. I mean loopback is fine, but the NIC fails to load and the error is "unable to load mandatory services.." Yes, I understand the mandatory devices loading and /etc/sysconfig/network/config. On reboot, the network fails. dmesg says it is now trying to load eth1? Ok, cp ifcfg-eth-id-00:4c:69:6e:75:79 ifcfg-eth1 rcnetwork restart -- presto! it comes up. So then I leave both ifcfg-eth-id-00:4c:69:6e:75:79 and ifcfg-eth1 in /etc/sysconfig/network. Some subsequent reboots work some fail. OK, easy enough: cp eth-id-00:4c:69:6e:75:79 eth-id-00:04:5a:87:c8:43; rm eth-id-00:4c:69:6e:75:79. rcnetwok restart -- it works! Reboot. I understand that the pci bus and the order that devices are activated and their addresses are dynamic. But where do I stop the randomness?? doneWaiting for mandatory devices: eth-id-00:04:5a:87:c8:43 19 17 eth1 device: Linksys NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (rev 11) eth1 configuration: eth-id-00:04:5a:87:c8:43 eth1 IP address: 192.168.6.16/24 doneSetting up service network . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .done OK, great -- for now. Obviously, I can't have a server that when it goes down, it comes up and the network (for whatever reason) is "guessing" at the hw address for the NIC. What in the heck is going on? So the questions: (1) why is my system now wanting to load the NIC as eth1 instead of eth0? (2) how in the heck is the hardware address changing? (I set the kernel parameters noapic and nolapic in grub to try and cure it -- no joy) I have read all the discussion on eth0, eth1 -- I know it doesn't matter what binding the system makes, but I just want to find a way to have my NIC come up each time in case I'm 1000 miles away when the power exhausts the UPC. Do I go to a straight ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-eth1 setup in /etc/network/sysconfig? Do I put both eth-id-00:4c:69:6e:75:79 and eth-id-00:04:5a:87:c8:43 in there (seems like a lame Band-Aid approach) What is the best way to solve this conundrum??? -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
