upgrade 9.1 to 9.3

Two questions please ... 1. Is it possible/advisable to download a 9.3 update to install over 9.1 Pro installed from DVD? 2. Will doing so give me an opportunity to update my installed apps especially Apache2? I've been running 9.1 Pro installed from DVD for some time and I'm having a niggling Apache and mod_python problem. I have never successfully mastered compiling from source and being a user more than a compiler person I'd rather not get into that. Maybe I'm just not brave/smart enough. Thanks Mike

Anothe perplexing problem with 9.3 install -- this time it's the printer. :o(

I know there have been some posts this weekend regarding printing problems with 9.3. Perhaps I'm not understanding those posts, but I could not find a solution to my problem in them. Did I overlook something in those posts? Again, a clean install of 9.3 It recognizes my HP Laser Jet 5P, and as far as I can tell the printer was configured properly during the install. But no matter where I try to print from (e-mail. or a word processor, or a page from a website) all I get is a line of gibberish at the top of one page and then blank page after blank page after blank page. The only way to shut off the printer is to clear the printer memory. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. Has not helped. No matter what I do I get the same result. The printer was working great this morning under 9.2 before the upgrade. Wife and I are totally stumped and don't have any ideas. Thanks for your guidance. Gil

usb not working

I'm having trouble getting USB to work on a SuSE 9.3 system. I don't know much about how it all works. I tried usbview and it gives me an error "Can not open the file /proc/bus/usb/devices" and indeed /proc/bus/usb is an empty directory. usbview says "Verify that you have USB compiled into your kernel, have the USB core modules loaded, and have the usbdevfs filesystem loaded". I don't know how to check what's compiled into the kernel but it's the standard SuSE kernel (2.6.11.4-21.7-default) so I hope so! I have set hotplug debug to verbose with yast, but I don't see anything in /var/log/messages when I do. I have created a /events directory but don't see anything there. (I rebooted and saw a lot of stuff but nothing when I plug or unplug devices). USB is enabled in the BIOS. The mobo is an MSI K8M Neo-V. I've looked in the admin and user manual, in the suse sdb and mailing list archives, and with google, but haven't managed to find a solution. I'm sure I've missed something obvious, but what is it? Configure servicename for kinternet/smpppd

Hi, I am trying to set up a DSL link with SuSE 9.3. I need to specify a "service name" but I have no idea how to do that with the setup (smpppd and cinternet resp. kinternet) I use. The provider is data.bg, a Bulgarian provider. Any ideas? A more detailed description of the problem has already been given on another mailing list: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-kde/2005-May/0078.html Under Windows XP the same hardware setup works, user name and password are correct. DSL modem can screw up YOU

I've installed SuSE 9.3 for an acquaintance on a system that has a wireless connection to a DSL modem/router (which was supplied by sbcglobal.net) Some days ago, YOU stopped working on that system. [YOU worked correctly on that system before that.] I've now tracked down the problem. Apparently an interruption occurred on the DSL connection (perhaps assigning a new IP address to the DSL modem itself). Something (perhaps the DSL modem/router itself) changed the 'relaying' of the HTTP protocol (through port 80 on the DSL modem <i.e., proxy>) in such a way that a webpage is returned that says "The broadband connection was interrupted but is again working. Please restart your browser. If this message is still displayed, please reboot your system". When YOU tries to fetch the list of mirror sites (this was likely my first use of HTTP after the system with the wireless connection was booted the next day), what YOU displays is a string in which 'broadband\error.html' has been appended to the base URL of where YOU tried to fetch from. Obviously, this does not work. Not only did something (perhaps the DSL modem itself) "corrupt" the HTTP dialogue that YOU was using, but there is no mention of how to __clear__ this situation. Rebooting the system that has the wireless connection *can* get rid of the "Restart your Browser" page if it was Mozilla that was showing it, but it does not get rid of it for YOU. Whoever programmed the something apparently believed that only specific browsers ever used HTTP. [Even power- cycling the DSL modem does not get rid of the problem to YOU.] mikus

NVIDIA impossible to download

Hi, For many months now the NVIDIA drivers site for the linux drivers had been broke. When I try to d/l the drivers it always stalls. I have tried different browsers and KGet w/o being able to get the drivers. YAST install depends on the NVIDIA site to work to complete the driver install. And we depend on it to get the newer drivers whenever there is a new kernel in YOU. Have any of you found mirrors that have the latest drivers? Is there another workaround. PeterB

Multiple wireless configs?

I've been trying to get multiple wireless configurations to work, so I can visit my friend, or a coffee shop, and just have wireless work immediately. I found two ways to configure wireless--particularly with respect to encryption stuff. Both start from Control Center. Option 1: I select yast2 modules->Network Devices->Network Card then select my wireless card, click on Next, and that gives me the chance to provide an SSID and key for the card. Option 2: I select Internet and Network->Wireless Network. This gives met he chance to create multiple configuration sets with SSID and encryption keys (and multiple keys per SSID too). Unfortunately, which option 2 looks like exactly what I need, it reliably crashes the machine totally when I try to activate anything. Option 1, by contrast, sometimes crashes the machine when it's restarting the network services, but on a reboot, the changes seem to have worked consistently. Is there something wrong with my system that's confusing option 2? Can I find out what files this thing is writing to and create them by hand in such a way that it scans multiple configurations to find a workable one? Or do I just have to configure a single network by hand each time I move around? I didn't backup the /var/lib/imap directory - did know about it. Now I know... I don't know if this should make a difference, but I was running Debian on the notebook before I reloaded. I eventually cleared the /var/spool/imap directory, then one by one made all the folders and subfolders through my mail client, exactly as they were, restored the tarball, chmod the whole thing, then ran reconstruct, one by one, on each subfolder, something like reconstruct user.hansdp.sent and so on. Took me about an hour but all is back to normal now, except which mails was read and which not, but that's minor. Thanks for the help. Now I just need to figure out sieve so my inbox can become manageable again.... :-) Thanks Hans
