I have a Billion BiPAC 7000 ADSL USB Modem. When I plugin my ADSL modem into my USB port, SuSE detects it. Hi all. I have Suse 9.3 Pro for 64bit. I want to upgrade my OpenOffice version via Yast/You. Question regarding running multiple VNC servers as daemons

I would like to set up 2 VNC servers, one that uses a resolution of 1024x768 and the other that uses a resolution of 1280x800. I currently have the 1024x768 server running which I started using start_daemon ( I don't want Xinetd to start it because I want the session to persist after I close my VNC client ). If I try to use start daemon to start a second vnc server it doesn't start, presumably because Xvnc is already running. I'm sure there must be a way to get two instances of Xvnc running listening on 2 different ports but being sort of a linux novice I can't figure out how. Anyone have any tips? Once again, I don't want to use Xinetd. I want Xvnc running as a daemon. Thanks, Scott

System Freezes at Shutdown

I am running suse 9.3 AMD_64 bit operting system with kernel 2.6.11.4-21.8. I have a wireless card D-lin dwl g520 Whenever I shutdown, it freezes at the ethernet shutdown at ath0. I can not tell what is happening at that point. Can anyone provide me with the information to try and look for additional dignose. One thing that I notice, If I remove the antenae, it will shutdown with no problem. -- Joseph Loo jloo(a)acm.org

I found a solution on my own. For anyone who is interested: I've searched for the old SUSE Linux 9.3 Updates, to find the Multi-Media-Option Packages. It seems to consist of more than only one package. I use xmms, so i downloaded: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/9.3/rpm/i586/xmms-lib-mad-1.2.10-68… and installed it. Works fine here. Another package, that seems to belong to the Multi-Media-Option Package is: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/9.3/rpm/i586/kdemultimedia3-mad-3.4… Matthias Eckert

I'll try to orginize this all in a more coherent writeup later (if I'm successful) but if anyone is attempting to backport nfsv4 to suse 9.3 x86_64 and you are building it from the instructions found at http://www.citi.umich.edu/projects/nfsv4/linux/user-build.html you will soon learn that while compiling the libgssapi, the "configure" complains about the following: susebox:/build/NFS4/libgssapi-0.4 # ./configure ... checking for Kerberos v5... configure: error: Kerberos v5 with GSS support not found susebox:/build/NFS4/libgssapi-0.4 # At the end of this email is the diff on how to hack a fix into the "configure" script so this false statement can be corrected and allow you to compile. Basically the for loop does not look in /usr/lib/mit which is where krb5-config is ultimately found (/usr/lib/mit/bin/krb5-config). But that still doesn't do you any good since it returns that libs are installed in "/usr/lib/mit" HOWEVER the configure script is looking for "include/gssapi/gssapi_krb5.h and "lib/libgssapi_krb5.so" and these guys are install with the prefix "/usr" NOT "/usr/lib/mit". Furthermore it not picking up "/usr/lib64/libgssapi_krb5.so" which it should since this is a 64-bit installation. The first problem is CITI didn't think to look in /usr/lib/mit which is paritially a suse issue since this seems like a really non-standard location. The second is a suse package problem which is confusing the correct thinking of the "configure" script to look for build information from the krb5-config program. Not sure who owns the 64-bit issues: Suse or CITI. I hope this is corrected somehow in Suse 10 Update 1. Huh? My thoughts entirely. I just logged into my machine at work and was presented with this prompt: I have no name!@anat0010:~> What is going on here - I've been having all sorts of weird problems relating to being unable to run openoffice, and I'm beginning to suspect that my environment is screwed (or I've been hacked). Actually I think that Suse should lighten the load with Kde most people do not need all the crap that comes with KDE and if necessary just have it in a repository , FreeBSD has a kde lite which is quite good.
