Universal trash ? & Log in prob.

Hello SuSE people. First of all reunning 9.2 & KDE 3.4 Universal trash is a question/warning for others. The log in problem is related/caused by that which I don't know how to fix. A little long-winded but necessary to understand the problem. History is: A few nights ago I ripped a movie DVD. When I finished I put the 7 gig file in the trash. Last night I started to do a Kdar backup and started to get error messages. One being that /tmp was full and couldn't proceed. I have /tmp set to empty every time I boot up so I just rebooted. After the reboot, SuSE brings me to a screen message that says / directory is full and KDE is unable to start. I drop down to init 3 and look at the /tmp & / directories and find nothing obvious. Then I boot from the DVD and do a system repair. Still nothing obvious. My / directory is 2 gig and is normally about 20% used. After several hours of this I just start trying different things to empty those directories. /tmp IS empty after the reboot except for the normal boot stuff. Just the / directory is 100% full. I finally see the huge trash files and empty the trash for all 3 users AND root! That empties my / directory. Hence the question/warning. How is it possible that trash can be in root's trashcan?? Is the trash universal with all users? Anyway, that returned my / directory to normal and I reboot. Now I get to the log in screen and attempt to log in as my normal user. X starts it's thing and I am dumped back to the log in screen. I try the other users and they work normally and bring up their KDE screens. Only I cannot log in this way. I have to drop back to init 3 log in and then startx. Then I get my normal KDE screen. Why only me? and how do I go about fixing that ? Bob S.

new cups 1.1.x and 1.2.x and yast2

Hey Group; As a long time Unix person I have run into one thing that I can't figure out. Why is Yast2, when setting up cups it resuses to leave the permissions on /etc/cups/files as lp.lp and insists on changing them to root.lp after I set them as SuSE does lp.lp. Problem seem to be coming from Yast2 near the end of the process when it is going to write the configured data. Up pops an error message. Which causes it not to write the default printer info. I have the cups-user and group set to lp for ./configure. It looks like yast2 is the cause. Also it seem /sbin/mkinitrd is not able to figure out the correct kernel version for modules. Terminal emulation between SCO-Unix, Hotkey, Telnet and Suse

Greetings, I am having a real tough time with Terminal emulation, more specifically on the SCO-Unix boxes, any one heard of or seen an error like " got tint " when hitting the backspace key? The second issue I have is simply strange, and only happens on the Suse9.3 PCs, The enduser uses hotkey to telnet to our central dailing server,a SCO-Unix box. From there they dial-out to our sites, via a selection of 32 modems. The question is how come the terminal emulation is so frustratingly slow when connecting to the Suse 9.3 boxes. But theres a catch. If I telnet into the SCO box from a 9.3 on tty or konsole in X, and connect to one of the "extremely slow in HOTKEY" boxes it work s perfectly. I can't seem to find any relevant docs, that cover this topic in detail, could some please point me in some direction here. I need a better understanding of the underlying factors at work here. Failure to ope floppy in "My Computer"

Clicking on the floppy drive's icon in the "My Computer" folder results in an error: The process for the media protocol died unexpectedly. This used to work just fine. Since I rarely use the floppy I can't pin down exactly when it started to fail but I did just notice it yesterday. One potential culpret is an update to the kernel a few days ago: kernel-smp-2.6.11.4-21.7 Anyone else see this problem? Other possibility is also related to the kernel. I just recently turned on hyperthreading and switched to the SMP kernel. This was shortly before the update to the -21.7 level. Thanks.

Opera updated, now seg faulting

SuSE 9.0 Pro Opera 7.11-0 updated to 8.0-4 Today when I did a system update I noticed that a new Opera update was available. Went through the update process, and now Opera seg faults when I try and run it. I've tried reinstalling 7.11 and reupdating a couple of times, but always end with the same result.

How to umount USB disk in GNOME

Ever since I loaded suse 9.3, whenenver I added a usb disk either a harddrive or a memory media, the system would come up and automtically mount the drives on the desktop. This is an okay but I am having a problem to umount the drive. When I click on the icon and request aan umount, I get the following message: "umount: only root can unmount /dev/sdc1 from /media/usbdisk". The only way I can umount the drive is to go to the root and umount the drive /dev/sdc1. I got rid of the fstab error by adding /media/usbdisk to the fstab. I also set it so users can mount or umount the drive. In KDE, the user can mount and umount the drive with no problem. GNOME should have a similiar property. Is there a configuration or something that wil allow me to umount the drive? -- Joseph Loo jloo(a)acm.org

How do I play a DVD's files off of my hard drive?

yppasswd: You can only change local passwords

I'm using SLES 8 and I cannot change NIS passwords using yppasswd and the root account on the NIS server. In reading this thread, http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Apr/1115.html, I've found that this is /by design/. Commercial UNIX variants (Sun and HP-UX) allow root on the NIS master to change NIS passwords. Is there any way I can make this happen on SuSE Linux 8? Rob A. saving OOo documents

100% of the time, I am unable to save OOo documents to NFS directories in 9.3. What I get when I attempt to save is "General Error \ Input Output Error." I am left with a file with the attempted save name, 0 bytes. The same file saves okay to local directories. Firewall

Hi all, I have a few questions. I am on 9.1 Pro. 1. How can I check if my firewall is running or not? 2. I have a machine at my friend's place running on Windoze. I want to transfer some files from that machine (on a dynamic IP) to mine. Even though I modified the hosts.allow and the hosts.deny files to allow access to all machines (i.e. I put the lines ALL:ALL in the allow file and commented the ALL:ALL lines in the deny file) winscp doesn't connect to my machine. In 9.2 I could disable the user password using passwd -d <username> 9.3 doen't allow this, I need this feature for a specific terminal I run, Would it also be possible to setup an autologin in runlevel 3 ? Synchronising bookmarks

Hi all I know how to transfer bookmarks from Firefox to Konq and back, but has anyone found a way of keeping the two sets of bookmarks in sync? Or of using one set of bookmarks for both browsers? (both read and write). Importing and Exporting all the time is not so hot. cheers jalal

Evolution has no spell check dictionaries installed

I have a SuSE 9.3 / KDE installation and when I installed Evolution I find that there are no dictionaries installed for the built-in Evolution spell checker. I verified that gnome-spell2 is installed. Anyone else run into this problem? Thanks, -Mardy

To ALL: First, I wish ALL guru's or othewise being an authority on all of this, would get together on whether to top or bottom. I have had one or more say they do not want to read through old information, but want new on top, and, then I get those who say the convention is to post on bottom! Well, it is obvious to me and to anyone who can read, that there is NO CONVENTION that is generally accepted! Secondly, I am NO TROLL, that description fits those who refuse to help, as per the additional message from someone in need that I included in one of mine!!!! I will post the way I have until someone can get all together and make sure which way it should be! As for my problems with Suse, I will state, again, but maybe in better words or wording, I am staying with SuSe 9.2 Pro as I am tired of the constant upgrade grind, and have NOT gotten full use out of it, yet! For everyones information, this is my third version of SuSe, but, because I am no way near mastering it and because it does NOT respond the way it is supposed to when certain information is fed into it, I am very frustrated at it. For instance, how to untar a tar or tar.gz, many have tried to give me directions over the computer and I do enter the outline as shown, yet SuSe keeps coming up either with "NO SUCH COMMAND" or freezes after I press the enter key after entering the info as directed! The really ironic part is it will not "take" an rpm, which I downloaded and tried to install and which YAST states it has, yet absolutely NO SHOW! I have had some good help from one individual, who must remain nameless per his request, plus my club SIG, but it is a shame the help is so uneven and that Suse itself has left so much to others, who do it for FREE and, again, I congratulate them on their ability. I am a college grad and a Vietnam Vet with 100% disability, and thereby hangs a tale of itself! :-(

trbl installing an rpm

I just installed, on a new hard drive, not an 'upgrade', Suse 9.3. Note: it does not come with dosemu! I downloaded the rpm, and when I attempted to install it, I got the following error: error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1) error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm Any ideas? 9.3: broken mkinitrd

Hi, Just tried to install mainline kernel 2.6.12 on SUSE 9.3. Works fine, but had to assemble initrd manually. Seems that SUSEs mkinird copies modules to initrd from wrong kernel release ( 2.6.11.12 on my case ); anyone here that might have read that script through and figured out what goes ballistic with it? -- // Janne

I've been having a problem with my ethernet card not initializing when the system is booted. This has happened on two different systems, with the same kind of NIC. I don't have as much information on the second system, but the stuff below is from one of them. Unfortunately, this is an intermittant problem. Sometimes it boots just fine. I recently turned off ACPI because I noticed it was using IRQ 11, as are both my video card and NIC. In ancient days, it was unacceptable to have two devices share an IRQ. Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to change either the video or the NIC's IRQ. what's an ag_bootloader?

I had a really bad hardware day today. I'm not really sure what happened, but one of my systems had a harddrive that started having read errors. It's a pretty old PII with a 2.5GB Maxtor HD (and a 340 MB Western Digital that has been rock solid for over a decade), and 128 MB of ram. The BIOS is kind of flaky, and it can be hard to be sure whether I'm having hardware, or configuration problems with it. reiserfsck was telling me I had bad blocks, which may, or may not actually be true. The errors were happening near the end of the check process, which may mean the physical peremeter of the disk. I tried rebuilding the tree, but that failed, and I got an error (IIRC, from reiserfsck) after that saying that there was a problem reading block 0. Well, I had already decided to cannibalize another old system and add a harddrive to this one. I decided to slick this harddrive, and reinstall the OS, using the problematic HD as the root. (I was betting the read errors weren't really from hardware, but from the BIOS not being configured correctly.) It seemed to take the installation OK, but I couldn't get YaST to install the bootloader, I couldn't even get it to install it to a floppy. What happened was that it would run mkinitrd, and then say it was copying the configuration files. I could hear it grinding away for a while, so I suspect it was doing something like that. But then it would just sit there waiting to start actually writing the bootloader to disk. (I *believe* that was the third and final stage). I looked at top from tty2, and saw a few processes going which seemed related to this. One of them was ag_bootloader. After about a minute, it would jump to over 90% CPU utilization, and stay like that for over 20 minutes. Note that I was able to boot the system if I first started the installation process from CD. If I tried to boot directly from the HD, it just printed GRUB and sat there. I finally rearranged the harddrives so the new one is the root, and the problematic one holds /opt. (This box is mostly used for stuff like SVN, so a broken KDE won't kill me.) The system installed OK with the new arrangement. But I'm still curious as to what was wrong. I was able to dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/boot/current_mbr bs=256 count=1, so it seems the MBR was accessible. Does anybody know what ag_bootloader is, and why it would behave as I described? -- Regards, Steven

A short time ago, I and some coworkers were taking a MySQL class. (We are porting an MS Access app to SuSE Linux and MySQL.) During the class he stated that Microsoft uses Linux to run their web server. Is there anyone out there that can confirm or deny this claim? It doesn't really mater much...except for its humor value.
