Problem with sound on one Suse 9.2 PC (OK on another)

Hi I posted the following to suse multimedia a while ago, but got no response. Sorry to anyone who is suybscribed to both, but I am hopingthe larger subscriber base of suse-linux-e will perhaps help me solve this problem with sound: I have 2 PCs running Suse 9.2. The older one works fine, but this second has probems with sound. The problems are: - some apps do not work: amarok and xine in particular. Amarok gives the impression of being "stuck": the progress counter does not move off 0:00. What makes this odd is that other apps do play sound: xmms, grip, ogle. - when I use the "test" button in Yast2 soundcard set-up, it too seems to get stuck. It plays a sound, but instead of the full sample, it plays the first chord and a bit of the next, over and over and over again. I get the same with alsaconf. - sometime this effect happens with xmms etc as well, though they generally work, as I said above lspci says that the soundcard is VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60). This is consistent with what the soundcard set up says. (The PC that works has Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 20)) I have tried various settings for ac97_quirk and dxs_support, but while these change the quality of the sound, the test sample is still "stuck" (expect for some which remove it altogether). I have tried adding and removing modules snd_via82xx and via82cxxx_audio, but no improvement. (By default, snd_via82xx is active and via82cxxx_audio is not.) Has anyone got any ideas on this? The 2 PCs use NIS etc so that the family can use either and get the same environment ... except that if we forget which app it is OK to use (and remember not to play mpeg4 files on the affected machine at all), we can crash everything. RedHat to Suse migration

Hello! Is there any simple way to migrate from RedHat do Suse? All users and passwords must remain the same. Problem is with users which have been on the system from RH7.3 and have also been migrated with upgrade to RH9. Thanks for all your help. M.

MacOSX interoperability problem via Samba

Hi I am trying to incorporate a Mac OSX system into my network but am having problems with copying files from my SuSE 9.0 server to OSX. I am using Samba 3.0, standard configuration including using UTF8 on the wire. When I look at a directory containing filenames that include accented characters from OSX Finder, those filenames are either replaced by a sequence of Japanese or other characters starting from the accented character, or the file is omitted from the list. I know that OSX filesystem uses UTF-8 normalization form D whereas my Linux is using ISO8859-1 and I presume Samba is trying to convert this to UTF-8 using normalization form C (filenames look correct from a Windows client). If I list the same directory using OSX Terminal, the filenames are replaced by a string of ??? starting from the non-ASCII character. Anyone know of a fix for this? Nick

unsigned packages

I know about the --no-checksig option, and I've done apt install rpmkey-* but there are still unsigned packages turning up. Is there another source for these packages that have been signed? Is there a way to locate the package maintainer to ask that they sign the package? Could signing be added to the script that creates the packages? Hi, Yes, ksynaptics adds some more controls to the touchpad, so now I can make it behave better. but still I cannot understand why after a reboot from SuSE to Windows I loose the tapping in Windows - if I power off and then start Windows everything works fine. Does the driver modify the device somehow which is not reset during the reboot??? Or does it modify some hidden BIOS entry (there is nothing to be configured by a user though)? I used SuSE 9.0 before and it didn't happen. What can be wrong with 9.2? It is available within Control Center under Peripherals as Touch Pad. Hope your laptop has the Synaptics Touchpad. Maximum swap size

One thing I've noticed, is that while there's been lots of talk, over the years, about minimum swap partition size, I don't recall seeing mention of a maximum size. For example, 32 bit CPUs have a maximum addressing range of 4 GB. Since swap is the virtual memory area, does this mean that it's also limited to 4 GB? If so, does that mean that the 64 bit CPUs can have a swap partition(s) of up to 16 exabytes? tnx jk

MS malicious software tool

Just for discussion, I wanted to talk about the MS tool released to help detect malicious software. My main concern is wondering why MS decided to classify this tool as a "critical" update? Isn't this pushing the legal limits of this tool? Should this really be rated "critical" since there are many companies out there with competing products which have been available for some time? Wouldn't this be the same as entering the Antivirus business, and labeling the software as "critical"?
