As I recall, when I installed SUSE 10 on my laptop I chose "English-UK" as it's close to what's spoken here in Australia. Now I find software thinks I'm in the home of fog, AKA Britain, whereas I'm really in the home of sunshine, aka Perth. The language selection is tolerable, though I'd rather an Australian dictionary (for example) if one exists, so as to have Australian words such as dingo, barramundi, quoll recognised. What really bugged me was starting gnucash and finding it want to use pommy quids instead of Aussie Royals (alright, we didn't call the rowals, but we nearly did. Really) aka dollars. Strange Disk problem

My DVD seemed to be broken, so I replaced the device. I was also having problems updating from YOU, so I ran system repair. After the repair, I was able to complete YOU updates. The only thing repair seemed to do was clean up some dependencies with OOS and some references to USB. don't recall exactly. Anyone know what is going on?

How to set monitor peramters at boot time?

Hi, I am trying to use the 10.0 live eval DVD, when X starts up half way through booting I get OUT OF RANGE on my monitor. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 753s and my graphics card is a RADEON 9250. How do I set the scan speeds of my monitor so I can configure linux? Thanks

copying directories backed up with storeBackup

I was performing some maintenance on our server, and find myself somewhat stumped. I replaced the HD I used as a backup. It had 10 days worth of "daily" backups using storeBackup, and used up ~21GB on the HD. I know it uses hard links and maybe some other 'niceties' to shrink the size of the backups (like bz2). I just wanted to transfer the contents of one to the other. I used rsync -avz /mnt/ /data1 (/mnt was where I mounted the old HD, /data1 is where the backup drive is mounted.). It backed on days worth, which took about 21GB, and I killed it when it was maybe halfway through the second days worth as it had gone to ~25GB. Obviously, I missed something. How could those backups take 21M on the old drive and a lot more on the one I was copying to. Is this making any sense to anyone? I thought rsync would make a "mirror" copy, but obviously not quite. What would copy those storebackup directories so that they would be the same as before, with its use of hard links and all (I'm guessing the hard links might be part of my problem, but I might be way off. SuSE 10.0 Gnome panels on big desktops

I've got SuSE 10.0 running nicely on an AMD-64 box with an ATI X800GTO graphics card. I'm using the ATI provided drivers to run "One Big Desktop" across two 1280x1024 monitors. I run a similar set up on an older SuSE 9.2 box as well. On the 9.2 box the top and bottom panels expand across the whole desktop (2560 pixels wide) but on the 10.0 box they will only expand to cover one monitor (1280 pixels wide). I've looked in the configuration database but I can't see anything abot this. Is there an easy way to make them expand to full desktop width ? I know I could run a separate panels on each monitor but that seems like a messy solution to me. Peter

SuSE 10.0 netdaemon and netapplet

I just put 10.0 on a new box which has both ethernet and wireless interfaces. I don't want to be able to mess about with the networking as a user, so how do I disable the netdaemon and netapplet (which seems to assume I would only ever want one or the other but not both interfaces up) ?. Peter.

raid5 degraded mode; trying to diagnose

Hello, I have been trying to figure out how to fix my raid system, SUSE 9.3, linux 2.6.11.4-21.9-default. A hard reset put my raid in unstable state, almost same errors as http://sumo.genetics.ucla.edu/pipermail/nelsonlab-dev/2004-August/000150.ht… except, sda1 seems to be the problem. md: kicking non-fresh sda1 from array! I did mdadm -A -f /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 and then /proc/mdstat shows the 2 disk raid active, but I could not mount it, mounting /dev/md0 hangs. If the raid is ok in degraded (missing 1 drive) mode, shouldn't I be able to mount it? Also, another strange effect before I had the guts to run any real commands was that I could only run one mdadm command; all commands after the first would hang. Because of this I could not reboot, I have been doing soft resets and booting a livecd ever since this problem occured. The next potential step after mdadm -A -f is mdadm -a /dev/md0 /dev/sda1. Since I really don't know what I'm doing, I thought I'd ask for help and I kind of value this personal data, I don't really want to risk losing it. I'm considering paying to get some help in debugging this remotely ... Exim with ClamAV on SuSE10

I'm setting up a mailserver using Exim4 and ClamAV on SuSE10. I've installed the ClamAV and Exim packages from the DVD, but it seems there is a slightly permissions issue - these packages obviously don't work together straight out of the box :-) I've tweaked /etc/clamd.conf so that clamd is now listening on the LocalSocket /var/lib/clamav/clamd-socket and I've tweaked /etc/exim/exim.conf so that it's trying to talk to clamd (and I've tweaked an Exim acl to ask it scan messages), and that's fine except that clamd doesn't have the right permissions to read the messages in /var/spool/exim/scan. I get errors like this my exim log: malware acl condition: clamd: ClamAV returned /var/spool/exim/scan/1EipSV-0000Jr-6C: Access denied. ERROR I'm a bit wary of randomly tweaking the permissions on /var/spool/exim/scan to make this work - what's the best way to do this? Can I add the clamd user to the mail group? Looking in /etc/passwd there seems to a user called vscan but it looks like it's for Amavis not ClamAV - or am I missing something here? Thanks in advance for any help... James

Here is a quick one I came across today which I ended up using deductive reasoning over the Internet, Grub error 16. Cause: /boot existed on partition that spanned past the 127 GB mark on older P4 system. Solution: Explicitly set up /boot on small partition (32 MB in this case) below the 127 GB mark. Other symtom(s): LILO errored out when LILO install tool was run. --Jason Snyder--

Firefox mouse pointers

Does everyone see only the mousy black mouse pointers in their Firefox installations? I am running Firefox 1.5 (latest SUSE RPM) on KDE 3.5 final on SUSE 10.0 and I see ugly little black mouse pointers instead of the sleek beautiful KDE pointers. Smart not working

I tried to get smart working (the update tool). First off, it wants to update almost every package on the system, which seems like overkill to me. But whenever I try to update a package, I get a list of Python errors. Which end in this: ... ... File "/usr/lib/python2.3/codecs.py", line 343, in __getattr__ return getattr(self.stream, name) AttributeError: 'file' object has no attribute 'bytebuffer' And that is it. :-( Google gives me no joy in tracking this down. Others have had the problem, but no-one has a solution. Anyone here have any clues??? SuSE 9.2, standard install with YOU/apt updates etc... Python 2.3.4 TIA

jdictionary vs. special chars on SUSE 10.0

Hi, I attempted to use jdictionary on my system with three plugins installed: ENG-GER, ENG-HUN and GER-HUN. (This meaning, that at least one language having special characters in all of them.) Surprisingly all of these chars display as an empty quadrat, making impossible to use the program on a productive way. e.g. searching in words contai- ning special characters works only with regexps, but not with bare- words. Enabling OpenOffice2 Mozilla-browser plugin for Opera?

I just succeeded to get the OpenOffice2 plugin to work for Mozilla Navigator and Firefox browsers using the following procedures for OpenSuse 10.0: 1) Enabling the Mozilla-browser plugin in OOo2 options: Tools -> Options -> Internet -> Mozilla Plug-in -> Enable 2) Created the following symlinks as root: ln -s /opt/openoffice.org2.0/program/libnpsoplugin.so /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/ ln -s /opt/openoffice.org2.0/program/libnpsoplugin.so /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/plugins/ Restarted Mozilla and Firefox and they became capable to display e.g OOo2 Writer .odt files 3) I tried the corresponding for Opera: ln -s /opt/openoffice.org2.0/program/libnpsoplugin.so /usr/lib/opera/plugins/ By default, Opera does start OOo2 externally to display .odt files. Telling Opera to use the pluging program instead didn't work. A message box said that the plug-in wasn't installed. (usually Opera is compatible with Netscape/Mozilla plugins) Any ideas? SuSE 10 Install Failure

I purchased the boxed set of 10 and have been trying for over a month to get it installed on my SCSI based system. I put in a service request to Novell over a month ago and we have been "playing" around since then trying to see what's wrong with my system. When we finally reached a point of determining that the problem was that YaST was getting confused with the install because I have more than one CD/DVD drive in the system, it was announced, today, that Novell does not support installs on SCSI based systems anymore except on a pay for call basis and it was suggested I ask about the install problem on this list. So, has anyone had any problems installing on a SCSI based system and if so what has been the work around? System consists of the following: 4 matched removable SCSI HDs, only one of which is turned on during the install 1 each DVD writer and reader and 1 each CD writer and reader. All except the DVD writer are SCSI, the DVD writer is IDE and is the device used for the install attempts (I've tried all 4 devices but all fail during the loading of the packages) because it ( the IDE Sony DVD) is by far the fastest device. Below is a typical error I get when trying to perform the install during the package writing phase: "error: /var/adm/YaSTInstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_ 0X00000001/MEDIA/suse/i586/ghostscripts-fonts-other-8.15rc1-29.i586rpm:MD5 digest: BAD Expected (cb29d41081097a3cd4feeda767aeb453) != (e8aa68850260b19cbc0d44f43a330b2d)" This error will repeat with just a different package name for all packages other than the first three packages. Below is a quote from Novell tech service: "After installation of the first packages the access to /mnt/var/ gets lost, resulting in errors like: Could not open logfile '/mnt/var/log/YaST2/y2logRPM' cannot get exclusive lock on /mnt/var/lib/rpm/Packages cannot open Packages database in /mnt/var/lib/rpm Yast got confused by your quite unusual system." I've installed all versions of SuSE Linux, from 7.3 - 9.3 inclusive, on this box before without this problem. Any help on how to get 10 installed greatly appreciated. dave

SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT-INV What does this mean? I'm having trouble transferring data from a site which I believe is very fast. I've noticed there are messages in the warn log containing the string shown above and also the IP address of the sever in question. Any ideas?

Possible to disable HAL, powersaved, dbus on OpenSuse 10?

Hi I'm running an older server and actually I'd like to disable all services I dont absolutely need.... I saw that by default HAL, powersaved and dbus are running on my system. Is it save to disable them or are these essential system services? The computer isn't a laptop so i dont know if i really need powersaved ? HAL and DBUS is something new to me, i dont have them on my Suse9.0 system -- are they really needed? I've already disabled subfs and since the computer is a server i dont need any hotplugging, usb or something like that for which I guess HAL could be used..... Thanks a lot! Matt

feature-request: Voting in Bugzilla

Hi all! The current openSUSE project's bugzilla has 1 serious drawback - no voting system. Some problems might seems to be "small" by the development community, but turn out as serious issues for users. For this reason I ask you, the openSUSE project leaders to add a voting system to openSUSE bugzilla, like in Mandriva, where users can vote for problems/ bugs/feature-requests, that must be solved first.. Hello suse-linux-e! I would like to set correct german character set setting, but I won't like to have complete german enviroment. Now I have english as default (this is OK for me) and I have two keyboards (Slovak and German). But sometimes I forgot to my charset and I copy some source codes using KEdit which contain german special characters and that is always converted to strange form. All german special charaters are missing. What will be correct to have english enviroment with three keyboards (English, Slovak, German)? How to add an fstab entry to automount an ISO image on startup?

I have the SUSE 10 DVD that I downloaded still on my HDD as /home/samjnaa/SUSE-10.0-DVD-i386-GM.iso. I want this iso to be mounted to /mnt/suse10dvd by default on system startup. Well I just got a small box of DVD-R. I tried it as root and it worked without a problem. I suspect that thestandard user should be able to write with no problem. I did notice one thing, it went into the DAO write mode on my system. I then tried the DVD+R. Again I have some coasters. Looking for postgresql rpms for SuSE 10.0 eval DVD

I just installed the eval SuSE 10.0 DVD, but the only postgresql*rpm it has is postgresql-libs. Are there RPMs available for the server and client? I try to use rpms as much as possible when the distro provides them, but it may be I need to go and install this one from source. -- Andrew Diederich

To compile 64 bit?

Hello SuSE people. Question: Am running an AMD 64 processor. There are still not all programs that are 64 bit. I know that the system will handle 32 bit stuff but I was wondering if an src file can be compiled to 64 bit. Ex: Tonight I went to download smart at Guru's site. There were no 64 bit versions, only i686 and src's. I hesitated to download either because I didn't know if either of them would work without problems. Bob S..

Mysterious cron problem with Suse 9.3

Hi all, I'm running Suse Linux 9.3, and I'm having problems with cron not actually running cron jobs. I suspect this is the kind of profile issue that commonly happens with cron jobs, but I don't have any idea how to debug it. For example, if as root, I run crontab -e and enter the following very simple cron job: 22 12 * * * /usr/bin/touch /root/hello.root In /var/log/messages, I have the following output: Dec 2 12:21:23 hypervisor1 crontab[7015]: (root) BEGIN EDIT (root) Dec 2 12:21:25 hypervisor1 crontab[7015]: (root) REPLACE (root) Dec 2 12:21:25 hypervisor1 crontab[7015]: (root) END EDIT (root) Dec 2 12:22:01 hypervisor1 /usr/sbin/cron[6536]: (root) RELOAD (tabs/root) so it sure seems like cron is waking up, finding the job, and then going back to sleep. However, the file that should be touch-ed is not there, and there are no error messages, either in /var/log/messages or as an email. Can anyone give me advice on how to debug this problem, or why cron does not appear to be actually running the job? Thanks, Eric

The SCSI drives (DVD reader, CDROM writer and reader) run off an Adaptec 29320 Ultra320 card, the IDE DEV writer runs of the IDE primary chain. There is no problem other than YaST is broken and Novell refuses to either admit so and/or fix it. They have refused to support my paid copy stating, after a month of jerking me around, that their "free" support does not include SCSI installations. Note that the install is being performed using an IDE drive, not via the SCSI chain at all. The drive in question performs the entire text portion of setting up to install, provides the gui portion of the install to include identifying the HD to be used, setting up the partition scheme for the drive, formats the drive, finds the mouse and identifies it, picks the time zone and location, and performs the package selection by default or lets me elect to personalize what I want installed, it then proceeds to the package install phase, loads (repeatedly) either 3 or 4 packages (always the same set) and then gets "lost" trying to find the drive its being running from all along. This setup is what I've been using to install versions 7.2 - 9.3 inclusive, and it's never gotten "lost" before. Thus my opening statement, there is no multiple drive problem. OBTW, the behavior repeats regardless of which of the four drives I use to do the install and it repeats when I used different pieces of media. So, is 10 crippled, don't know about "10" per say, but I'd say YaST is totally hosed. dave

Wireless ieee80211 patched for PEAP/MSCHAPv2 connections

I wanted to post this at the time it was resolved in hopes it would help someone scanning this list, but never did. Though the recent wireless discussion though spurred me to fire off helper statement for folks looking for clues. Useful for those running Suse 10 with a centrino laptop (ipw2200 driver) and are attempting a PEAP/MSCHAPv2 encrypted session. For those able to make PEAP/MSCHAPv2 session but can't maintain it due to wpa re-keying, download and patch the ieee80211 kernel code and install it to solve your problems. http://www.bughost.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=829

An issue I'm having with SuSe... I switched over from Fedora to SuSe on this particular server, and I've discovered (much to my dismay) that once a file has been saved, you cannot use Backspace in "Insert Mode" to delete characters or lines in your files. You can only delete text in that way if the text has been "freshly added," so to speak...if it is unsaved data. I don't know if this is typical of VI, since I'm a fairly new Linux user and am mostly familiar with Fedora Core 4 (and teensy bit familiar with Red Hat 9.0 from back that one class I took back in college). Is there any way to get around that...at all? I figure it's probably a real long shot but I figured it'd be worth investigating... -Myles

Postfix mail server

Hi, i currenty have a couple of servers running a qmail/vpopmail that server some mail for me. However i wanted to convert to postfix due to its good reputation and the fact that i'm now using SuSE and it seems to be the preferred server. 1) what are the requirements to get a server that authenticates SMTP requests, serves imap/pop3 mail and does everything with virtual domains. I would prefer to use mysql as the virtual domain handling, however - the default install of postfix on suse 9.3 doesn't support this correct? so... 2) what other method that suse's postfix does support is recommended. I _have_ googled this and unfortunately nearly everything i have come across that uses virtual domains, uses mysql, and i would really like a 'SuSE config' . However, if mysql (or any SQL db really) is the best way - then i'm happy to compile from source. I'm just being overwhelmed with the different daemons/programs people are using to get a mail server running, and i'm sure from one tutorial to another they are simply replacing one program with another - but then i see both of them used in the next tutorial. (ie one has SASL, then one had mysql - then one had SASL and mysql :( ). 3) If anyone has a suse specific mail server set-up tutorial, i'd love to have the link.

Compiling and installing a kernel

Hi, I am running 10, and I had a couple of questions regarding compiling a new kernel. 1.) Is there any way to just compile a default kernel. The reason is that I don't know what all is compiled in my current version and don't want to take any risks. 2.) Will this screw up my rpms? I think the kernel was installed as an rpm.

SSH issue

Well, this is not really a "huge" issue, since it doesn't prevent me from SSHing into my server; it's just one more button I have to press. I just installed SuSe 10.0 yesterday on one of my servers and things are working pretty okay (I'm about to get Samba going for a PDC, if I can). I have, however, discovered something interesting. I try to SSH into my server from my desktop, and I get the message "Enter Your Authentication Response" and a text box to enter my password, which is all fine and dandy. But when I hit OK afterwards, another box appears, stating (once again) "Enter Your Authentication Response." This time, however, there is no text box into which I may enter a password, so I simply hit OK again and I'm into the system. Anyone know why this is happening? -Myles

Argh, after a period of perfect w-lan connectivity with SuSE 9.3, 10.0 causes agony again. After the system update, wireless didn't work. I then installed the ipw-firmware package; after configuring the w-lan interface it worked fore a few hours until I rebooted. Since then, the wireless connection has gone. I tried to install the latest ipw2200 and ieee80211 versions, but neither compiled. I then reinstalled the original SuSE 10.0 kernel modules (via system repair), rebuilt ipw-firmware from the src-package (as I picked up in a SuSE mailing-list), but still, no connectivity. At this stage, I just don't know what's wrong: kernel modules, firmware, or network setup. And it all worked so nicely with 9.3! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi everyone, the sixth Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting (commonly known as FOSDEM, [http://www.fosdem.org/] will take place during the last week-end (25&26) of February 2006 in the city of Brussels, Belgium. It's an annual 2-day event hosting talks, tutorials, and stalls for the free software/open source community. It is organized by volunteers at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. Access to all parts of FOSDEM is free, but donations and sponsors are welcome to help fund the event. As you may have already noticed (because Pascal blogged about it), we will have an openSUSE 'DevRoom' (Developer Room) @ FOSDEM and most likely a booth as well. Therefore, we are in the very early stages of preparation and would like to team up with you to organize the openSUSE @ FOSDEM event. To start off, we would like to get your opinion on what topics, presentation, talks, tutorials, etc. you would expect from openSUSE @ FOSDEM? And if you would like to deliver a presentation, talk, tutorial? The ultimate goal would be to have presentations distributed equally amongst community members and SUSE / Novell employees. I am not sure .. Are you using KDE? If so, then I will hazard a guess that you have the rpm gtk-qt-engine installed. If so, try uninstalling it. I had the same problem with the GTK build of CVS Emacs under KDE, and removing that rpm solved it. The price you pay is that you don't get the KDE window styles with Emacs. But the colors work. (This issue was reported to the CVS Emacs bug list some time ago, but to date hasn't been fixed.) If this solves (or rather, works around) your problem, feel free to post it to the SLE mailing list, so that it might help others. My system is: AMD K7 1200MHz Athlon 266MHz MSI-K7T-266-Pro VIA-KT266 socket-A GEFORGE-2 MX-200 32MB AGP + TV-Out LG CDRW 16x10x40x DDR-DRAM 256MB NEC ZIP drive DVD drive PHILIPS TRUST AMI MOUSE Serial During Update from SuSE 9.0 while CD2 was in the drive the monitor image disappeared and the mouse did not move anymore. After a restart the following CD's worked well, while the mouse did not work; the monitor worked well. At the INTERNET test I could move with the keys to 'no test''but after that the test ran and failed, as my connection should be made by hand, which I could not at that moment. Proxy Settings

Hi All I'm having trouble getting my SUSE Linux 10 machine to connect to the internet on our LAN. I'm looking at trying to use YOU to get my system up to date. Via YAST-Network services, I went into the proxy and configured my proxy settings there. Authentication on our proxy works using NTLM. I've tried all the different syntaxes to get it working i.e. \\domain\username; domain\username etc. but when ever I try the "test proxy setting" it fails. I'm able to connect to the internet via firefox which does not use these settings but Konqueror uses these settings and also fails. Anybody out there in a similar work environment been able to get this working? Thanks Stephen
