Hello one and all, I did a search of the known bugs and also the mailing list archives but couldn't find any mention of this so here goes. I have a couple of middle aged laptops (300-500 MHZ class) that use drive overlays due to large hard drives and dual booting with Windows. When I installed Suse Pro 9.1, I had to use the command hda=remap during installation and in the grub config file. That works just fine. 9.2 had the same command but didn't support my touchpad properly and I never tried 9.3. When I attempted to install 10.0 using the store/for sale set of CD's, the installation CD took and properly interpreted the hda=remap. However, on reboot, the kernel-default package has ide-core as a module rather than being compiled in so the command just got thrown away (it's there, the kernel just ignores it). So I never get past the first reboot since the partitions aren't seen properly. So, I figure I have several options at this point. 1) find a kernel rpm that has ide-core compiled in rather than a module (are there more kernel packages on the DVD? I haven't looked at the DVD yet) 2) Boot to RECOVERY and hack the initrd and figure out how to specify "options hda=remap" when it insmods ide-core and hope I remember how I did it so that when a new kernel is released I can do it all over again. (does mkinitrd read modules.conf? If so, I might be able to put that command in there and see if it gets picked up by mkinitrd) 3) Build my own kernel 2.4.x RPM under 9.1 and call it kernel-ide or something like that so that it never gets replaced during the upgrade 4) Open a bug, stick with 9.1 for now and hope that 10.x fixes this Anyone got any ideas, especially where I can find #1? Does the multi-processor kernel have ide-core compiled in? I didn't try that one. Thanks Dave

Problem with Autofs on a SuSE 9.3

Hello, I´m having a problem with OpenLDAP and autofs integration at SuSE 9.3. Before to try this I moved the directory "user1" from "/export/home" to "/export/home/students2005", but it likes that I have to do more than this. NFS in V 10 and Apple OS

I have an Apple OS X 10.4.3 that was successfully connected to Suse Linux 9.2 NFS server. I upgraded to Suse 10.0 and now the Apple cannot find the Linux server. It can successfully ping the Linux IP address. What settings do I need when starting the Linux NFS services? There must be some differences between 9.2 and 10.0 that I'm missing. MaxDB 7.6 on OpenSuSE v10.0

For those interested, the following package MUST be installed prior to MaxDB 7.6 installation: compat-libstdc++ v5.0.7 To install it, insert OpenSuSE CD #2 and run yast2. A non-default lightweight installation of OpenSUSE (without graphics environment) won't include this package, default install (tested using Gnome desktop) already includes this package. Kickstart with PalmPilot please?

Hi all, I have a Palm device (actually a sony clie) but I'm failing to get any of the Linux (SuSE 9.3) software to work with it. I've tried telling them to use /dev/ttyUSB2, /dev/ttyUSB3 (which devices actually seem to exist) and I did a mknod to create /dev/ttyUSB0 (same major device as the other two ttyUSB devices, minor node 0) that didn't work either (though interestingly, the device disappeared without my help?) Changes in cron.d-files are not detected automatically

Hi, When I change a file in /etc/cron.d, that change is not detected automatically. In my case, I commented out the beagle call in /etc/cron.d/beagle-crawl-system.crontab. But still, every night beagle-crawl-system gets called, cron didn't recognize that change. The cron entries get reloaded when the time stamp of the directory /etc/cron.d/ changes, though. I confirmed that behavior for 9.1 and 10.0. Is that `works as intended', or is that a bug? Hotplugging in SuSE 9.3

My USB card reader, which works fine under SuSE 8.2, is erratic under SuSE 9.3 . The reader seems to work if it is plugged in at boot time. Also, once I unmount and remove it, if I plug it in again, or plug it in with a different card, it is not seen. If I try to mount it I get: mount: /dev/sdc1 is not a valid block device I have disabled automount per the instructions here: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2005/05/dkukawka_subfs_nomount.html The "usb_storage" module not getting loaded appears to be a symptom rather than a cause of the problem. Any suggestions? Also, if someone wants to put in a kind (or unkind) word about 9.2 or 10.0, I would be happy to read it. Thanks, Peter Taylor

Thanks Carlos E.R for those interesting hints. Did you mean I should enter "resume=/dev/sda6" in /etc/grub.conf ? I entered it there and then ran /sbin/SuSEconfig but did not find any refernce to "resume" in /var/log/boot.msg or /var/log/messages Am rather edgy about altering configuration files outside Yast. In older versions one had to always run /sbin/SuSEconfig - is there any other way of involving Yast in this case ? Roy

9.2 update and apt

Packet command error on hard disk

Please, can somebody explain the following entries in the error log? There are hundreds of them. Does it mean a bad disk drive? This occurs infrequently (once every few days) and goes for about an hour, then suddenly goes away.
