Getting better perfomance out of my nVidia card.

I've been trying to tune my nVidia car a bit to get a better frame rate out of it - I am sure I can get it runnign faster. I've done some digging, and people mention frame rates much much higher than the maximum I've ever been able to get... Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to maximize the performance? First Time User - Problems/Questions

I am a first time user of SUSE Linux. I installed 10.0 on an HP Media Center PC 873n with a Dell 2001FP monitor and a HP LaserJet 4 printer. So far I have three questions/problems which I'm hoping someone can help me with ... In the /var/log/messages file there is following messge: "linux kernel: DMA write timed out". The message was being output every ten seconds from initial boot but it stopped in the middle of the night last night. Can anyone tell me what would have caused the message? I cannot get the printer (HP LaserJet 4) to function. The following error messages are being sent to /var/log/messages when I try to lpr: unable to open /var/run/hpiod.port: No such file or directory: prnt/hpijs/hplip_api.c 75 unable to connect hpiod socket 50000: Connection refused: prnt/hpijs/hplip_api.c 693 unable to send ProbeDevices: Broken pipe I cannot get display mode "1600 X 1200 (UXGA)" to function which, by the way, was the default mode of installation for me. The highest resolution which functions according to SUSE installation is "1600 X 1024 (WSXGA)". However, when I interrogate the monitor (Dell 2001FP) it says it's displaying only 1280 X 1024. In my previous installation (Mandrake 9.0) 1600 X 1200 functioned fine. Eval DVD iso confusion

Hi >From previous post the Eval-DVD at the ftp mirrors is exactly the same as the one in the retail box? I downloaded the above iso and installed SuSE 10. I am missing some packages in my iso like java 1.5 and Thunderbird. Is this how it is supposed to be? If so, meaning the missing packages are expected, what is the url for the directory at an ftp mirror where I can download and install the missing pacakges so that I can add it to Install Sources in YAST? If not.. maybe I downloade the iso too soon and now the iso has all the packages so I should get the iso again and install SuSE again? thanks in advance -H

Starting all x, icewmbg and icewm from a single command.

Hi, I have a SUSE 10.0 machine with runlevel 3 as default. There is a single normal user on the comp, sometimes having to run icewm. I tried to put all the needed startx :0, icewmbg and icewm commands to a single script, allowing the user to run it without typeing all the previous stuff separately. The only _bad_ thing is, that my method doesn't work at all; x starts, but icewm(+bg) doen't find their "normal place" and complain about not existing display. I have no experience with such a system, used to have always runlevel 5 as default; would be great, if someone could give me advice what to do. (I also tried various export statements and played around with .xinitrc as well, giving still not the wished result.) Thanks, Pelibali

Changing the default Thunderbird icons for KDE.

Hi, I realized quickly, that the Thunderbird icons provided by SUSE (16x16 and 32x32) in SUSE Linux 10.0 having not enough quality and e.g. while moving the mouse through the Thunderbird icon placed onto the panel, in the popup, next to its description a very pixely picture shows up even on rel. low resolution, 1024x768... I decided to replace the icons and got to an issue I can't explain. In the mean-time I found a work-round of this, but would be interes- ted, if anyone could please explain me, why this happened: with an up2date locate database I identified two exsisting thunderbird.png-s on my system and replaced them with the variants I wanted to have. In addition I put also 4 others with different sizes to their respec- tive location, so ranging between 16x16 and 128x128. I logged out and then in again to my KDE session, and _was_ surprised; independently, that both the previous pics I have overwritten and added new ones, KDE partially still remembered them: - on the panel the _old_ picture was present, but when I opened the popup with the details, showed me the _new_ (~larger) image, - on the K-menu still the _old_ version was there, but while opening the menu-editor, on the right the _new_ appeared; here when I wanted to chose a new icon, in the apps section for "thunderbird" still the _old_ was there, but browsing to its normal path /opt/kde3/... got me to the _new_ variant... I also tried to restart the whole comp, without any result, the repla- ced old pics didn't go away just by themselves; had to do really this last approach. Is there a cache or something alike for the icon-collection for KDE, which simply didn't get flushed in this case even after first KDE-, then after _system_ restart?!
