BASS hanging on SUSE 10.0

Hi, My girlfriend came to me asking, why the BASS doesn't work on her compi. I checked it and everytime she runs it, there is a popup appearing asking for a decision between "Adlib" and something else, but independently what you chose, it freezes the whole desktop in a very low resolution, showing exclusively the top-left corner of it! Please any ideas, what we are missing on her comp, or what could cause the above symptom? I tried the same on a default, but multimedia re- animated DVD-installed 10.0 with no result... Gnome install failures on SUSE 10

I'm primarily a KDE user, but recently wanted to go beyond the base Gnome libs and such that were installed on my system. It's worth noting I'm running a dual cpu, EM64 Intel system, and I had done originally a SUSE 9.3 install, then upgraded to SUSE 10. I had done upgrades to various gnome files that were standard installed even if you opt to go KDE, so when I wanted to install the full Gnome package, I was asked how to deal with conflicts. I chose to downgrade all the existing packages and that aspect seemed to work alright. The problem came when numerous major and minor apps failed in their install, with the following typical message: ***************8 libgnomedb-1.2.0-7.x86_64.rpm install failed rpm output: GConf-ERROR **: Resource problem creating ' -- 'sw_single'/gconfd-root' aborting... /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.13287: line 4: 23123 Aborted opt/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule etc/opt/gnome/gconf/schemas/libgnomedb.schemas >/dev/null error: %post(libgnomedb-1.2.0-7) scriptlet failed, exit status 134 *************** This happened for various apps, including evolution, and not surprisingly since this package couldn't get installed. The resource problem creating 'sw_single' is common to all the scripts that failed. I've only found one reference to this with SUSE in the mailing list, and the original person who posted never got an answer back(it was on the german list, and he had precisely the same problem as myself). Updates are listed for packages such as evolution(even though it failed), and trying to install causes the same problem. Prior to this, I had no troubles at all running KDE, and even the gnome-associated apps and libs such as mono or beagle ran OK. Currently, 'm still running KDE which is fine, but even though a Gnome option is in the login page, it won't start up. I'm suspecting it's either related to running a dual x64, or to the fact this was an upgrade from 9.3. Any thoughts, suggestions appreciated. xawtv4 with a superlong error message

Using xawtv4 in my kde desktop I sometimes get an error message which is two times longer then the width of my screen. This happens in most cases when the signal of the tv antenna is down or very weak. I haven't been able to decipher this error message. Is there a way to capture this message? I could then present it to the experts and see how I can get rid of this message. Pressing on the OK button at the far end of the message will kill the message but I would like to be free of it.

Xlib error

On a new SuSE 10 install, the system froze necessitating a reboot with the computer reset button (boy, I hate when I have to do that). On restart, all users get a warning message window saying the session lasted less than 10 seconds--fix the installation. Using WINDOWMANAGER=gnome startx on the console, I see the X server refused the connection based on: Xlib error: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE. What does this mean and how can I correct it? Long wait for Konqueror

On one of my computers running SuSE 10.0 (a laptop) it seems to take several minutes for Konqueror to come up after I click on it. Where should I be looking for the cause of the delay? Paul

Hi List; I'm thinking about moving from Fedora to Suse. I have a few questions before I try it out.. - How hard/easy is it to setup the ipw2200 package for Suse to use with my centrino laptop? - Once installed how do I control the wireless interface? - I have a new Treo 650, my Treo 600 would sync with Fedora/Kpilot but not so with the 650. Is it known to work with Suse? - What version of KDE is shipping/packaged with Suse v10 ? - What is the defaulyt filesystem type for Suse, can I choose Reiser via the install? - Will redhat RPM's work on a Suse install ? - Where do In find additional sources for updates (Like adding repo's for yum) and how do I configure them ? - What's the best sources of help. (I found that the Fedora mailing list was hands-down the best support for Fedora) ? - How stable is Suse v10 and why would I choose the commercial version vs. the open source project? I checked the file and the YAST editor correctly changed it to "" already. You say it worked for you. Does that mean that you were able to get the small panel on a custom background or were you referring to the config file edit? rpm

I have downloaded several rpm's several times. the progress bar says complete but then when I close firefox it says all downloads will be canceled. all the downloads said complete and I put them in a certain folder. they are not there. once the progress bar reached the end it stopped downloading but I got the message that it will be canceled if I close firefox and they are no where to be found. Script to check if an application is running

Hi All, I want to write a bash script which can be executed by cron every minute to check if an application is running. If it is not running the script should start it again. What I normally would do to check if it is running is execute: # ps aux | grep App root 7479 15.4 0.7 21300 7816 pts/1 Sl 06:34 0:00 /usr/local/bin/App root 7495 0.0 0.0 2880 700 pts/1 R+ 06:34 0:00 grep App Is there a way of doing this? Group Membership Strangeness

I'm on SUSE 9.3 on a desktop machine. I created a new group (wworkers) and added myself (joe). But I found that I could not write to a directory that was group-writable for that group. On investigating, I found: joe@myhost:/srv/www/vhosts> whoami joe joe@myhost:/srv/www/vhosts> groups users dialout video joe@myhost:/srv/www/vhosts> groups joe joe : users dialout video wworkers Note that 'wworkers' is in the output for 'groups joe' but not for 'groups'. Similar results for 'id': joe@myhost:/srv/www/vhosts> id uid=1000(joe) gid=100(users) groups=16(dialout),33(video),100(users) joe@myhost:/srv/www/vhosts> id joe uid=1000(joe) gid=100(users) groups=100(users),16(dialout),33(video),1000 (wworkers) Any ideas about what might be going on here?

Annoying cyrus-imapd error message

Hi, I have cyrus-imapd installed as I want to use it eventually. In the mean time, I get a daily error message from cron "DBERROR: reading /var/lib/imap/db/skipstamp, assuming the worst: No such file or directory" How do I provide that file properly? The cyrus-imapd documentation doesn't mention any file named skipstamp. Of course, I could disable the cron job in cron.daily/cyrus -- but I'm afraid to forget to enable it again when I come around to look at cyrus-imapd. So I would prefer to have an other work-around. Sound not working correctly in SuSE 10.0?

Hi - I just upgraded my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 8100, to SuSE 10.0 from 9.2 and now my sound is no longer functioning properly. When I boot up, KMix comes up with a red X across it's icon in the systray and does not present any volume controls or work. I did some searching on the internet and found one person saying to run alsaconf and this I did. That seems to partially restore my sound for some applications and if I restart KMix after doing so it works. But other applications, such as GAIM continue to not produce sound, so this remedy seems to only partially succeed. YAST reports under Hardware > Sounds that I am using an ESS Maestro3 PCI Card Model. When I try to "Edit" its configuration however I get a blank screen and can do nothing with making or setting any sort of configuration settings.. I don't know if this is expected/normal behavior for this sound card, but it seems rather odd to me... Any suggestions or help as to how I should proceed with getting my sound system working will be greatly appreciated of course! ;-) Marc....

You could run Archibus (www.archibus.com) WebCentral on a aolely Linux platform, with either Oracle or Sybase as a back end, but you requested a "good" FM program, so that's out. Does anyone know of a good facilities maintenance program that runs entirely on linux? Preferably web-based. So far all the ones I have found are based on Microsoft Access or SQL Server. I found an article on a LAMP based solution developed for a firm in the UK, but I haven't been able to find the contact information for that company.
