I never would have imagined that this would be so tough.
If it's not working using yast, you could try editing the file manually. /etc/syscofig/displaymanager
find this section, it is where the suse kdm theme is loaded
"the blue, full screen login panel SuSE installs"
## Type: string ## Default: SUSE # # Define the theme to be used by kdm. If empty, the traditional login # window is used (which lacks some features) <==================" the old small grey one" #
DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="SUSE"
change it to
DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME=""
that should be it. That is what I had to do anyway. hope that does it for you. Hope I didn't double post this, I don't know if it got sent the first time. No double post here.
I never wanted to spend this much time on such a (seemingly) trivial matter but this has now officially turned into a quest for me..... I checked the file and the YAST editor correctly changed it to "" already. You say it worked for you. Does that mean that you were able to get the small panel on a custom background or were you referring to the config file edit? It does work, but you probably never restarted kdm for it to take the new settings into account. Drop to a console (Ctl-Alt-F1), login as root, issue init 3, and after it is done, init 5, which will take you into your new kdm session. Hit (Ctl-Alt-F1) again, logout, Alt-F7 to get back, and you are done. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

You should be able to simply log out if all you want to do is restart X. I believe that restarts everything. The init 3, init 5 bounce is not always the best idea. It can cause some things to run with the wrong environment. I prefer init 1, password, init 5, or simply init 6, and go get coffee. Steven

I'm having problems with this seemingly simple thing too. /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager has DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME="" I've done the directions above, and I've also completely rebooted. I still get that new full screen blue login display. I have also gone into the KDE control panel as administrator and set up the kdm behavior there. I set an alternate backdrop for kdm, and for a moment it does appear on the screen before the blue screen appears.

I found another post about this general subject and a writer stated that manually running SuSEconfig was required to update /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm files. I ran it manually and it coughed up more verbose information including: ATTENTION: You have modified /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. Leaving it untouched... Well I don't recall editing that myself, so I assume the KDE control panel for kdm manipulated that file. In that file I found a line: Theme=/opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/tmemes/SUSE I changed it to Theme= And the old panel now appears.

Battling config tools. I confirmed this with a new install today (not an update). If the /etc/sysconfig editor is used FIRST to clear out the DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME setting there, then it all works and kdm uses the standard grey login box. Later the KDE control panel can be used to customize the kdm logon dialog. But, mess with the KDE control panel for the kdm dialog first and it will alter the /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc file, so SuSEconfig will then refuse to update the theme setting.
