Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? print from K-Mail run together

I don't remember seeing this problem on the list. KMail print on screen is clear and most letters are separated. When I print out a mail, some letters, particularly the "t", the "si" and the "sk" combinations are scrunched together with adjoining letters. I am printing to an HP 2200D laserjet. The typeface on screen (and on paper) is a sans-serif font. Even on screen, it is slightly scrunched in spots. "ri" and "ti" and "tt" and "th" are too close together. Suggestions? TNX--doug

Can't open Transcode tarball or it doesn't exist

Hi Folks, I have been trying to get a tarball of transcode to compile on my SUSE 9.2 system. Every pkg I have d/l'd from the sites listed on the Transcode Wiki page: http://www.transcoding.org/cgi-bin/transcode are unopenable. Every one, including the beta versions. Have I made one of those embarrassing newby errors? Konqi Filemgr says : "The file does not exist" even tho it lists it. Is there a location for a transcode I can open and compile? PeterB p.s. screen, mouse, kb lockup

While attempting to stop a video playing on Macro Media Flash Player 7, I managed to lock out everything. I could not move the mouse cursor, the arrow keys and the rest of the kb didn't work, ctl-alt-del did nothing. None of the function keys did anything. (The video was something downloaded from the 'net via Firefox.) I wound up pulling the big switch, as us hams like to say. Is there anything else I could have done? I'm trying to put Linux to practical use, and this is the first time I've seen 10.0 crash, so it's good, but not fool-proof. (If something can be broken, this fool will break it!)

stopping dictionary attacks on sshd

Hello all I notice several automated break-in attempts appearing in /var/log/messages regarding sshd. A small sample: Nov 7 14:34:10 d8400 sshd[18607]: Invalid user a from 71.129.198.189 Nov 7 14:34:11 d8400 sshd[18609]: Invalid user aaron from 71.129.198.189 Hundreds of entries like the above, working their way through every English letter using common first names, also names of services like Apache. I ran across this Novell Cool Solutions article: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/trench/16341.html It describes the use of a shell script, run once per minute using a cron job, that parses information from /var/log/messages and adds offending IP addresses to /etc/hosts.deny. I saved the script as ssh-block.sh in my home folder, in a subdirectory named cronjobs. I used su to become root and ran crontab -e, and added the script to run once per minute. Entries in /var/log/messages confirm that the shell script is indeed being run every minute, but the contents of /etc/hosts.deny hasn't changed at all, despite the presence of failed sshd log-ins (also written to /var/log/messages). Can someone knowledgeable about shell scripts take a look at the URL above and see if there is a problem with the script? If not, what did I do incorrectly? What's the proper way to run this job regularly? I assume it must be run as root, both to read /var/log/messages and to write to /etc/hosts.deny. Dan

Mounting an SD card with a Ricoh CardBus

Hi, I've a laptop with a SD card reader, which when I use "lspci" I can see is a 06:09.0 Cardbus bridge: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c476 II (rev b3) When I insert an SD card it is not mounted automatically. Should it be ? How can I mount it manually ? Thanks, CPH

Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG under SuSE 9.2?

Dear everyone, I wonder if anyone has any experience of getting the wireless eth-card in a Dell Latitude D600 to work for SuSE 9.2? The card is an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. It is recognised by the system as such, and I am able to configure it in Yast without any obvious problems. However, it doesn't get an IP-address. This is in contrast with the same laptop in the same location booting the XP partition, in which case it finds the network, gets an IP and chats away happily. The setup is the same for SuSE and XP: DHCP, named ssid, WEP-ASCII-5char encryption. The following may be relevant version numbers Kernel 2.6.8-24 wireless-tools 27pre26-10 ipw-firmware 3.3 During boot I get the following messages (some of which sound a bit omnious, but I am not certain how serious they are) that I interpret as related to the problem <4>ieee80211_crypt: unsupported module, tainting kernel. Hi, I'm not sure, that its easily possible, but running few comps in a network, I would like them to pass my root e-mails to my own machine. I setup already the alias, so my "normal" user can read everything already, but only locally. This I would like to change by the following scheme: - if my computer is available, then the messages should be transfered, - if my computer is not online, messages should wait in a queue, until it appears again. This should happen with no error-messages, no expiring, etc. I don't ask for complete solution for this problem, but please let me know, what I would need to get the above system up and running. At present I have postfix installed and running on all the comps; UIDs/GIDs are identical on all of them; all SUSE, but various versions. Thank you, Pelibali

External disk choice

I have a 4-year old DELL desktop with a heavy CRT monitor that I'm going to give away soon . I also have a 2 month old laptop. Both computers run Linux/SuSE. I would like to buy an external disk to save most of my s/w development now residing on my old desktop. But I would like to be able to use it also with my laptop. Both computers have some USB ports so I daresay an external USB disk would be fine .. I'd appreciate some suggestion about a USB reliable, large capacity but portable, external disk or any alternative solution. Thank you in advance. Maura

SCSI RAID recovery

I have a fileserver running SuSE 8.0 with 2 IDE Drives and a SCSI RAID (RAID5). The system boots up to one of the IDE drives, and the SCSI RAID drive runs as a mounted filesystem (/dev/md0). (all filesystems are REISERFS). Problem: The SCSI RAID drive has crashed (won't boot up), and I need to recover it (repair it, through some utility). Further: The software does not seem to want to mount the disks, even though the SCSI BIOS (Adaptec) recognizes the disks, and they are listed as OPTIMAL. I tried to repair the disk(s) (with reiserfsck), but it produced an error message: reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2 reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16 reiserfs_open: neither new nor old reiserfs form found on /dev/md0 The literature suggested that this error message is hardware related (either a disk is physically damaged, or maybe the RAID isn't recognized), but again, the disks are recognized (and therefore, so is the SCSI Card). I tried to boot up with SuSE CD 1 in Recovery mode, but not sure what to do there (i.e., after the root prompt - just run reiserfsck?). Literature suggests there are plenty of tools to handle disk recovery, and especially RAID support, I can't find reference to them anywhere. The installation of the RAID was trivial (using the YAST2 partitioning GUI window on startup), and yet recovery seems to be a mystery. This can't be right. Does anyone know where there are "decent" and "usable" recovery tools? OR ... does anyone know what "specifically" to do in this case? Can I re-partition without formatting, and recover the existing data? Any help is appreciated - I'm sure I'm missing something "obvious", but can't find "obviously" what to do in the literature, docs, etc. Thank you. Apache2 Won't Start

Hi all. I'm setting up a new SuSE 10 install. Apache 2 won't start. I had apache2 working, with php5 and squirrelmail, but something dorked up. I get the following error... ------------ Starting httpd2 (prefork) Syntax error on line 10 of /etc/apache2/mod_status.conf: Invalid command 'Order', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration The command line was: /usr/sbin/httpd2-prefork -f /etc/apache2/httpd.conf [1A..failed --------- mod_status.conf reads as follows... -------- <IfModule mod_status.c> <Location /server-status> SetHandler server-status Order deny,allow Deny from all Allow from localhost </Location> </IfModule> -------- I'm not sure what this means, but I don't see any misspellings. Not sure what other module it might be looking for. It was working, basic index.html came up (set owner and group to "root" in htdocs. Using k3b

I have a large jazz CD collection, a lot of which may not be available forever. I'm concerned with things I've read that CDs and DVDs may be subject to deterioration. I also know that CDs can also be damaged by scratches, etc. I'm familiar with and have successfully used the CD cloning utility of k3b to create a playable (with a standard CD player) duplicate CD, but I want to copy the entire image to my hard drive, so I can keep it there in case the original becomes unplayable later. I have no interest in creating a bunch of duplicate CDs, most of which will never be used in my lifetime. When I clone directly to my hard drive, the program created two files: k3b_0.img and k3b_0.img.toc. This is fine, but I can't figure out how to write this image to another CD. 9.3 Review

Linux Magazine (Linux Pro in the US) has a 4 page review of the 9.3 release in the June 2005 issue, pgs 44-47. "Novell's Suse Linux 9.3 is a feature-rich, and robust Linux distribution. At first glance, the new version does not seem much changed from 9.2, but a lot of work has gone on under the hood. The distribution is definitely good for new users. If you already have Suse Linux 9.x or a similarly recent system, the update is only worth the effort if you are unhappy with your current setup.
