Ugly Fonts, thin and grainy - why?

Hi all, I wonder why installed applications on my Suse 9.1Pro sometimes get thin and grainy, ugly fonts? The original included Mozilla 1.6 had nice font rendering. But when I installed the newer, general mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-1.7.3-full-installer.tar.gz in /opt, both Mozilla 1.7.3 Navigator and Mail client got ugly, thin and grainy fonts. I read in Suse 9.1 admin manual that most applications use the newer Xft font system. Therefore I wonder if I need to do any special configuration or setup for each application e.g Mozilla before they can use Xft? And/or do each application's fonts directory need to be added in the Xft's config file /etc/fonts/fonts.conf, e.g /opt/mozilla/lib/res/fonts, and afterwards execute it with the command "SuSEconfig --module fonts"? Now I have installed Firefox 1.0 from rpm and web pages get nice fonts as they should. Are there corresponding font undertaking that needs to be done when building new rpms? Any suggestions? Terje J. 9.1 > 9.2 question

I was running SuSE 9.1 pro without problems. Now I did a clean install (format everything and install) and I have two questions (1) mouse. I have an IBM versatile mouse (wheel and 6 buttons) that was designed mainly for win however under SuSE 9.1 work great as a wheel+3 button mouse (the side buttons were not operational). I believe I was using the ps2 intelli mouse driver. Now under 9.2 even though the button and the wheel are active the movement are not controllable. I could not find any driver in the list or do any changes in the mouse setup that work. Seems that the driver for the mouse change from (9.1 to 9.2) I went to the store and I got a logitech optical mouse / ps2 connector. Again I have problems. In this case the mouse works, the three button worked but the wheel does not. (a) is there any way to retrieve and install the mouse driver from 9.1 to 9.2? so I can use the IBM versatile mouse as I have before? (b) is there any way to activate the wheel in the logitech optical mouse /ps2 (c) do you know of any program/driver that provides additional features to the mouse. (d) what's the best mouse for linux? (2) I love the snow in the alps background that came with 9.1 where in the dvd I can find it? BTW I am very impress by the presentation and installation of SuSE 9.2. What a value! Best wishes for the new year for all of you TIA -=terry(Denver)=-

System tray toooo long

Hi: I am using SuSE9.2 with Nvidia drivers, last YOU update. Suddenly, the system tray elnages itself leaving a lot of blank between icons and The panel get the sliding buttons. Normally there is space enough in the panle. Someone can give me a clue (In the panel I have 1) SuSE button 2)KWeather, 3)Pager, 4)Logoff/suspend, 5)taskbar,6)system tray,7) clock) thanks -- Osvaldo Clúa

DLT not recognised

I have been trying to get my DLT working to run a backup. But Kdat would not recognise it. After searching the mailing list I found a referance to mt_st which I installed but after running $ stint I get this "Can't find the tape characteristics database" Any help please Dave

Cheap 9.2 ide/scsi backup solution suggestions

Hi I have a machine that needs a tape backup as my HP Colorado ide 8gb unit id's itself in 9.2 in /proc/scsi/scsi But something on the box is not allowing the unit to be configured. (I need more space than a cdrw can provide) So can i be ignorant and ask Can anybody suggest a cheap 8gb+ storage medium for doing occasional large backups to either an Ide/or scsi bus. I have done a fair ammount of googling - Im admitting defeat. So any possible solutions/suggestion are very welcome ___________________________________________________________ ALL-NEW Yahoo! I have just got a new computer and, of course, have installed SUSE 9.2 again. However, on trying to do some Apt upgrades, I get the messages that suser-jogley and usr-local-bin are either not available or could not be connected. Tried both the gwdg and the mathematik.uni-bielfield repositories. Everything else is working, it's just James' two which are not. Are they still available? I can't find anything in either the archives or on Google. Many thanks for any information Keith

USB Webcam under SuSE 9.2

Hi all Happy New Year to ya! Santa brought me a new Webcam that, it turns out, is not quite supported under Linux. No matter, I was going to give it a go with the ZC030x driver and see if anything happens. (The camera is a Creative Webcam NX Pro). Anyway, it raised the question, when I plug the camera into the USB port, the usb system recognizes that something is plugged in. Somehow, it needs to know to load a video driver to activate /dev/video, but how does the usb system know what to load? modprobe.conf contains a line 'alias char-major-81 videodev' which should get it loaded but "someone" in the system needs to know how to call that. I don't quite understand yet how the USB system pulls in the modules that it might need, anyone have any clues or pointers to further reading on the matter? There is a Missing Person Billboard anyone can use it.
