Gnome 2.6 and Schemas

When I try to select a theme in gnome 2.6 (also in 2.4 from SuSE 9.1), I get the following error message. The default theme schemas could not be found on your system. This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that your gconf is configured incorrectly. Metacity is running, so where is my gconf and how do I configure it? However, I'm pretty sure I did something wrong. When I look at the disk I don't get a bunch of files and stuff but just see one iso file. Do I need to do something to extract the normal files? I can't boot off the disks and I'm not sure I can use them to install 9.1 Pro. What do I need to do before I burn them to cd to make them usable for install? Thanks Jack

non-root login problem

Dear SuSE users, When I tries to login suse8.2 system with non-root users with ssh protocol, it says "cannot find account for UID 500", and the connection closed. But telnet is ok. JUNO

Just tested accessing a juno account via pop3 and smtp which they now support. Everything worked. I also found a listing for their DNS entrys. I am told that you can have network and dialup on the same machine. But can you have two different dialup ISP with their own DNS? Otherwise I can use the primary to log into the net on the second user and access the multiple juno accounts by pop that way. CWSIV

xcdroast, suse 9.1 and nonroot user

So, I'm an old suse lover, but I can see the same problem in last versions of SuSE Linux. It's a xcdroast in nonroot mode. It can't find my cdrw device. But in root mode, the xcdroast quick found my cdrw and work fine. Who know, how it fix? May be, the bug is in cdrecord (it not scanbus by nonroot user too)? thank you all, Nick. ssh sessions terminated

OS: SuSE 9.1 with latest YoU updates I can establish a remote ssh session and work for a few minutes but them the connection is closed with the following error: Read from remote host x.x.x.x: Connection reset by peer My system is SuSE 9.0 running ssh v 3.7.1p2-113 Remote system is SuSE 9.1 running ssh v 3.8p1-33 Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do about it? Winmodem on Toshiba laptop

After a long absence I am back on this list with SuSE Linux 9.1 Prof. - greetings to everbody! Was quite pleased with it on my desktop PC and ADSL, but on the Toshiba Satellite laptop its been quite a headache just configuring a simple analogue dial-up connection with the built-in winmodem and the ltmodem package on CD #5. To start with the winmodem is detected and a symbolic link is created from /dev/modem -> /dev/ttyLT0, and after configuring the modem and provider everything appears to be going fine. However after SuSEconfig runs at the end of the procedure (without any error messages) kinternet fails to dial-up, returning a mysterious <error code 2> in the log. Also when running wvdial it fails to connect, returning a message <unable to find /dev/modem>. To my surprise it appears that /dev/ttyLT0 has disappeared while the symbolic link from /dev/modem remains. Since wvdial.conf contains the line modem = /dev/modem this would appear to be the problem. Problem appears to be that SuSEconfig DELETES /dev/ttyLT0 Hope somebody can help!

dev/lp problems

Hey Group; Can anyone think of a reason that a known good printer and cable plugged into a new motherboard fails to print. I have setup it as ECP+EPP on address 378 irq ? (normally 7) and SuSE 9.0 "hwinfo --printer" fails to find it. /proc/devices shows char. "lp" and /proc/interupts shows "parport0" are found. Cups seems to be working correctly and is waiting for the printer. This is a new motherboard Asus A7N8X-E with a untested LPT port. I wonder if this may be a acpi issue or a defective port. ACPI - spin down second hard drive

Hi, maybe this has been said, or you already knew, but it was new for me. I have two hard drives (hda, hdb) on the first IDE-channel and want to spin down hdb, because it's only a back-up drive and I want to save some heat and sound. Before SuSE 9.1, I put a line 'hdparm -S 60 /dev/hdb' in /etc/init.d/boot.local to make hdb spin down. It worked very well, after a couple of minutes after boot hdb spun down and stopped and stayed that way as long as I didn't mount it. But in 9.1 this doesn't seem to work -- at boot I can see that boot.local is being read and there are no error messages concerning the line 'hdparm -S 60 /dev/hdb', but then it never seems to be executed; hdb never spins down. If ACPI is enabled you can use a powersaving scheme, but it applies to both drives, I want to spin down only hdb. After some poking around with the power saving schemes I found out that it seems as you can use YaST's Editor for /etc/sysconfig-files and edit 'Other - etc - sysconfig - powersave - hdparm - HD_STBY_PERF' and change it from '-B 255 -S 0' to '-B 255 -S 60 /dev/hdb'. The difference is, the way I understand it, that instead of telling hdparm to never spin down anything (-S 0) you tell it to spin down hdb after 60 x 5 sec = 5 minutes (-S 60 /dev/hdb). I've been using it for a couple of days now and it seems to work very well. No problems so far. Five minutes after boot, hdb spins down and mostly stays that way. It's not _exactly_ the way it was before, but I think that has to do with the automount-thing (btw, do not try to "Unmount" a hdb-drive in Gnome, it makes the whole system freeze -- that menu entry shouldn't be there at all :-) /Lars
