dhcpcd and problem obtaining IP Address

I am running Suse 8.1 Pro on my laptop. The ethernet interface "eth0" (using dhcpcd) is unable to obtain IP address from a DHCP server (on office LAN). I added DHCLIENT_DEBUG='yes' parameter to "/etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0". Even then I could hardly make sense of the error messages (pasted at the end). I used to be able to connect before (until a week ago). The only thing I remember doing is compiling "orinoco-0.13e" wireless driver, which, I guess, has "hermes.c". I dont know if that has anything to do with this problem. I can't figure out what is wrong. I really appreciate your help. k3b on SuSE 9.0 versus SuSE 8.2

Is there any incompatibility between k3b as it comes with SuSE 8.2 and k3b as it comes with SuSE 9.0 ? In the past I burnt some W-R CDs using k3b on SuSE 9.0 and then I was unable to read them on SuSE 8.2 as well as I could not rewite the same rewritable CDs by running k3b on SuSE 9.0 My goal is to be able to write and read and reuse W-R CDs on both SuSE versions. Can I do that safely ? Thank you. MEM

Konqueror is crahed with SUSEFAQ website

wireless config question

Is there any quick & dirty way to cause the driverloader from linuxant.com to change its designation to that of the card? Right now, the card is recognized by SuSE as IEEE 802.11g and the driverloader wants to designate it as IEEE 802.11-DS. Linuxant's support has not responded to this question, so am hoping someone has experience. I have no clue as to why this happened, but it might explain why three days ago it worked and yesterday it didn't. Thanks... ...CH

VMware-Samba Printing Problem

I posted this on the Samba discussion list, but haven't gotten any replies, so I'm posting here. I'm running 9.0 Pro with Samba 2.2.8a and VMware Workstation 4 installed. There is a Windows 2000 Professional guest OS installed and functional in VMware. Samba is configured correctly as far as file shares are concerned; the W2K VM can access, read and write to Samba shares, follow symlinks, etc. with no problem. Connected to this box via USB is an Epson C84 color inkjet printer. It prints fine under Linux, and is shared out in Samba. In the W2K VM I can browse to the printer, install it, and W2K gives me a "Ready" status just fine. But, when I (try to) print from the W2K VM, the print jobs never make it out the printer; the printer is totally non-responsive. If I watch /var/tmp as I send a print job from the W2K VM, I can see the spooled job file (smb-somethingorother*) momentarily appear and then disappear. But nothing comes out the printer! There is probably an rpm that hasn't been installed yet. AFAIK, "uname" and all it's options, including "uname -a" doesn't give the SuSE distro number. See man uname. Whereas "pin k_athlon: should show the version.. I am running k_dflt on SuSE 8.1; and when I do: "pin k_deflt" I see (among other things): Distribution: SuSE Linux 8.1 (i386) To change your splash screen you could edit the GreetString variable in: /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc from: GreetString=SuSE Linux 8.2 (%h) to: GreetString=SuSE Linux 9.0 (%h) See: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Feb/0549.html What I am suggesting is a bit of a kludge, I am sure there is a better way, but this would work for today. Help with Pine and IMAP

Hi all, I've been using Pine for POP3 servers only. Now I got an account with IMAP and still want to use this nice client (IMHO). I configured Pine to access the IMAP server and it works fine but when it comes to see the folders, I only see the "INBOX" one... I created some sub-folders under INBOX, such as: INBOX.Sent INBOX.Trash INBOX.Drafts INBOX.SysAdmin etc, etc. So, as I said before, I only see "INBOX" in Pine's folders menu. Any suggestions on how to configure this client correctly? Thanks in advance and regards, Martin

properly removing a usb 2.0 card

I'm Using SuSE 8.2 with the 2.4.21-144-default kernel on an old Compaq E500 laptop. I have two PCMCIA cards, one is a network card and the other is a Belkin USB 2.0 card. I can insert and remove the network card on the fly with no problems at all. The USB card inserts just fine and the system picks it up and installs it like a dream. Right now the only thing I use with this card is a 40GB buslink drive that the system also sees and installs automagically with no problems. When I'm done with it I unmount it and disconnect it from the card. At this point everything is still running fine. When I remove the card however, the system freaks out and locks the keyboard. Everything else still works, I can still navigate with the mouse but I can't type anything. Ctrl-alt-delete doesn't work, it doesn't seem to see recieve any input from the keyboard at all. Also, when this happens, I can't shutdown properly, it hangs immediately after shutting down kde. Is there some way of properly turning off or disabling the USB 2.0 card before removing it or do I need to kill a process of some kind? Best Way to Update Kopete? Gaim Still Dead

I updated Gaim with the security patch but it still fails to connect with Yahoo. Anyone know if Kopete is handling Yahoo's nonsense any better? What is the best way to apply the latest Kopete update? I have downloaded the 0.8RC1 file and opened it with Konqueror but read about lots of plugins, etc. and fear potential dependency and file location errors. I looked for a step-by-step doc on the Kopete site for the update but found none. Thanks! dmc

Gaim 0.75 configure and SuSE 8.2

Hi Folks, Thanks to Scott I have a working version of Gaim 0.75 with security patches on my 8.2 Pro system, however, I'd like to be able to build it from source. My understanding is to do this, download the tar file, unzip it and in the unzipped directory: ./configure [options] make check install (to build an RPM for us rookies) problem is, when I perform a "./configure", I get the following error: checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.0.0... no *** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly installed. configure: error: *** GTK+ 2.0 is required to build Gaim; please make sure you have the GTK+ *** development headers installed. The latest version of GTK+ is *** always available at http://www.gtk.org/. the log says: | #include <gtk/gtk.h> | #include <stdio.h> | | int | main () | { | return ((gtk_major_version) || (gtk_minor_version) || (gtk_micro_version)); | ; | return 0; | } configure:14109: error: *** GTK+ 2.0 is required to build Gaim; please make sure you have the GTK+ *** development headers installed. SuSE 9 Pro & Mydoom Prevention

Questions, please? 1. Do I understand correctly that the mydoom virus cannot harm a Linux box (SuSE 9 Pro in my case)? 2. Is it possible that the Mozilla 6 E-mail app could forward mydoom intact or are the occasional E-mail notes I get from other servers false positives for the presence of mydoom on something I have supposedly sent? 3. What is the best app to be certain that such garbage is stripped both incoming and outgoing from my E-mail activities? Thanks! dmc

Mozilla freezes with Flash

I've seen at least one other person on the list had this problem, but I didn't see a solution posted. After installing the newest Flash plugin from Macromedia for Mozilla, whenever I visit a site with Flash, Mozilla completely freezes. Anyone know how to solve this? thanks, Peter.

The HowTo helped a lot - Thanks. I put the patch description files and the *.patch.rpm files on the CD and ran YOU. YOU was able to get the list of patches from the directory.3 file on the CD, but when I started the update, it couldn't find any of the files. Do I need to rename the .patch.rpm files removing the <version>.<architecture>.patch part of the file names? I noticed that in the patches folder on the source web site, there was also a file named <rpm name>.rpm and it was linked to one of the other files in the folder. Is that the file I actually need? If so, that seems to be at odds with the shell script described at the beginning of the HowTo. Restricting users to internal mail

Hi all, This is not my decision, but company policy of one of our clients: I need to restrict some users to sending mail internally only, and also receiving no mail from outside. So far I've done: main.cf: smtpd_recipient_restrictions = check_sender_access hash:/etc/postfix/restricted_senders check_recipient_access hash:/etc/postfix/restricted_recipients permit_mynetworks check_relay_domains smtpd_restriction_classes = local_only #local_only = # check_recipient_access hash:/etc/postfix/local_domains, reject local_only = check_sender_access hash:/etc/postfix/local_domains, reject And of course, made the appropriate restricted_senders ect files and hashed them. As it is above, it works as far as blocking senders go. If I uncomment the commented lines, it doesn't work at all. I think the way I typed it is wrong (in form). If I don't put the second "local_only=" in and just put the check_recipient_access and check_sender_access lines underneath each other, mail.log tells me that it's ignoring everything after the first "reject" What is it supposed to look like? Printing man pages from Konqueror

When I use man:/ls from Konqueror it displays the page nicely, but when I select print it opens a dialog saying generating page 1 and sits there forever. xkill gets rid of it. It does it for all the man pages I've tried, prints normal web pages OK though. Any idea's where I should look? Oh yeah, I'm using box standard Suse 9.0 Phil

Slowdown SuSE 9.0

For some reason it seems to take ages for applications to start up in SuSE 9.0 Top shows CPU% user as 98% with kdeinit using 54% and X using 44% ps -ef shows 23 instances of kdeinit running with most of them being kio_file /tmp/ksocket...... I also seem to have 14 instances of mysqld running for some unknown reason. The current open konqueror is not accessing mysql and neither are any other applications that I know of. vmstat shows zero memory swapped in or out and I have 1Gig of Ram in this machine. Anybody know what might be happening? Sorry the information isn't that detailed, but I need some help in where to look further. Phil

In which crontab? I checked the root crontab and there is no script which is responsible for logrotation. Hi list, I have a problem. My fresh installed SuSe 9 rotates the access logs of the apache each day. But the httpd.conf is clean of logrotation statements. I had a short look into yast but could not determine where to modify in order to stop logrotation. Can you provide me a hint for solving this problem? Greets and thanks in advance Daniel

It's not like I don't know what I'm doing! Problematic CD burning was the final straw with Red Hat 8.0 for me. I actually filed a bug that got to be well known on their list, but the bug remained through 9, and it's probably still in Fedora, though I'm well past caring. I guess I'm just writing this to vent my frustration. If by some miracle, someone can actually tell me how to fix this, I'll just consider myself lucky. And, yes, I Googled myself silly with these messages. I even downloaded the entire backlog of the cdrecord-support listserv. Lots of people have the problems *like* this, and apparently NO ONE has any answers, even the guy who wrote cdrecord. Post mortem: I stared at my navel for a few minutes and downgraded to the k_smp-2.4.20-100 kernel. That was it. It's apparently been that long since I tried to burn a disc. I still say that there's no excuse for this. Why did a security fix break burning CD's? Who knows. Again, this sort of thing is pretty hardware-specific, I know. Aaaargh! Sigh, dk P.S. Quota problem

I've just updated my system via the online update, and now I get this report when checking quota: olga:~ # quota -v ingrid quota: WARNING - Kernel quota is newer than supported. Quotafile used by utils need not be the one used by kernel. Disk quotas for user ingrid (uid 505): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace /dev/hda5 0 2048000 2048000 0 0 0 /dev/md0 0 2048000 2048000 0 0 0 I don't even know where to start looking for what's wrong! The user "ingrid" has 400+ files that occupies about 500+ MB of disk space on these two volumes, still the quota reports nothing at all? Can someone please point out to me what can be wrong here? Wireless security?

I've got my lan cables in little stick-on plastic channel running from 2nd floor to basement, and to several rooms. It's not utterly ugly, but it ain't pretty. I'm just not ready for the kind of poking, drilling and breakage that would be needed to hide the wires inside the walls. However, my wife was just wondering, out loud, how the existing cable runs will look to potential home-buyers if we put the house on the market this spring. Actually, she was asking in that tone that women reserve for phrases like: "You're not going to wear that shirt with those pants, are you?" Neither one of us wants to be without net and internet for any length of time, so I've just started thinking about wireless lan. I've also read about war-driving and stealing residential wireless access and getting hapless owners in trouble with their ISPs for spamming and cracking done via hit-and-run pirated wireless. And I certainly don't want anybody downloading kiddy-pron through my ISP account. So, is the current generation of wireless lan stuff (router/gateways and wireless nics, etc.) well protected, by default? I want to stick with DHCP and avoid static IP if I can -- I occasionally bring home different laptops from the office. I'm not supposed to monkey with extra profiles on the office machines, and they're all set up for DHCP. What's the mechanism that's used to ensure that somebody driving past my house can't grab a connection to my ISP if I deploy a wireless lan? Is exclusivity/ privacy based on MAC addresses or on certificate exchange? or.... what? Your words of enlightenment will be appreciated. Regards, /kevin

DSL with kinternet

Hello, I need some help. I just got DSL. Under Windows it runs fine (I had to test it, please don't laugh;-) I configured everything I could with yast (SuSE 9.0), but when I press on the kinternet button, nothing happens, all the script tells me is: SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.06 on lucy4. Status is: disconnected trying to connect to smpppd connect to smpppd Status is: disconnected Interface is eth0. Status is: lurking pppd[0]: Plugin pppoe.so loaded. pppd[0]: PPPoE Plugin Initialized pppd[0]: Plugin passwordfd.so loaded. pppd[0]: Using interface ppp1 pppd[0]: Setting MTU to 1492. pppd[0]: Couldn't increase MRU to 1500 pppd[0]: local IP address 192.168.99.1 pppd[0]: remote IP address 192.168.99.99 And that's it! Now I tried rp_pppoed, but typing always adsl_start is a little bit uncomfortable...I'd rather use kinternet. What might I have configured wrongly? Thank you. I bought an ATI Rageon 9600 some weeks ago. Got it to work with 3D in an sec. But i was never happy with the preformance. Quake3 started nicely, looked great but my fps changed from 40-200 every sec. So now im back in "Nvidia" gameing. Nothing beats it! I have had problems with this driver set. Namely ATI 3.7.0 drivers are a bit on the unstable side - but the card rocks. One problem I have noticed is that by running the "fglrxconfig" you change X config file X reads from XF86Config to XF86Config-4 (back to the old days... ?). I am still investigating the full ramifications with this. However, the question I am seeking to answer is how to get X to look back to the XF86Config file and not the XF86Config-4 file once someone uses the fglrxconfig setup - the advantage to ATI's X setup is that it has all the features/"options" (those that ati allows) such as those for fast writes, agpmode, TLS settings (transform and lighting), etc... So, after digressing from the point of the post here it goes.... Make sure you have the "kernel" source installed (e.g. I have k_athlon version *-166, and the source for the same... 166). Then get the fglrx-3.7.0-0-i586.rpm and the km_fgrlx-3.7.0-0.i586.rpm. Then if you in init 5 (the gui level) got to tty1 (crtl+alt+F1) and enter "root" and "root-password". then issue the command "telint 3". Once in init 3 X will be dead (to be absolutely sure issue the "init 3" command at boot). Now go to the dir where the fglrx rpms are and issue: rpm -Uhv fglrx-3.7.0-0-i586.rpm then cd into /usr/src/linux and issue the following: make mrproper make cloneconfig make dep Ok, now we're sure the kernel is configure for the km_* modules. Now back the fglrx dir to issue the following: rpm -Uhv m_fgrlx-3.7.0-0.i586.rpm. Then cd into /usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx Now in that directory is a file "Makefile.module" which is a script for the real make file ".make.sh". Issue: make -f Makefile.module And then make -f Makefile.module install. As a note, if you need to reinstall the km module to recreate the fglrx.o file then issue make -f Makefile.module clean. Note: It does an rm -f *.o that deletes any *.o files in the dir (the only one being of course is fglrx.o) - Or you could of course issue the "rm -f *.o" yourself. (not having this in you bash/console) command cache file could be dangerous (e.g. arrowing up to find previously issue commands, or tab complete commands could lead one to issue the "rm -f *.o" command. Done inadvertently in the wrong directory could lead to absolutely "no fun in Linux land"). Also be advised that if you're experimenting with configuring you system for 2.4.x and 2.6 kernels on the same system and want to use the fglrx ati drivers that it is advised for the well versed and confident system hacks and not for the light hearted. (aka a pain in the arse :-/ ). Generally the ati code gets very confused at times and certain changes may occur - also not fun! All in all the ATI hardware is IMHO superior to the present nVidia offerings, but the software/drivers leaves a bit to be desired. Lastly, I would recommend if posible, use the SaX2 so that it keeps the X and the rest of the system on the same page, as it were! Do the follow and issue: sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx -b /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/profiles/firegl This will config X for the fglrx driver and leave the XF86Config file as the one the X read from. After this is done, edit the XF86Config: pico /etc/X11/XF86Config And add: Load "dri" At the bottom of the of the modules section of the XF86Config (or XF86Config-4 for those using fglrxconfig instead of SaX2). postfix, fetchmail and RSET

Hi all, Have server running postfix, maildir/ format, courier-imap to serve the clients, amavis for scanning virusses and spam, and fetchmail to get all mail from a dropbox at the isp. Fetchmail is running as root, .fetchmailrc: set postmaster "info" set no bouncemail poll mail.myisp.nl protocol POP3 localdomains mydomain.nl, localhost user "xxx" pass "xxxxxxx" to user * here options fetchall What I want is all mail, that has a to:address to an unknown local user is dropped in the local info box. Postfix main.rc (relevant lines): local_recipients_map = luser_relay = info(a)mydomain.nl I suspect I am wrong here: as I can interprete the logs, postfix gives a RSET to fetchmail, which causes fetchmail to stop immediately, not flushing the already read messages on the mailserver of the isp. Also, the message that goes wrong is not read, and not dropped in the general info-box. What do I have to change? TIA L1

Didn't sound real helpful to me, but then I am not running "wireless". However, if you just installed SUSE 9.0, did you remember to download Using (YOU or fou4s, or whatever) the bug fixes for YaST..etc. As I recall there were lots in 8.1; less in 8.2, and a few in 9.0, but if you didn't I would do that ASAP, as that may be part of your problem. ldconfig: How's it work?

Does anybody have good insight into how ldconfig actually works? I know it reads the /etc/ld.so.conf and creates the /etc/ld.so.cache. I believe the cache simply provides a mapping to the libraries encountered by scanning the list in the conf file. What I'm wondering is whether it also does some kind of memory caching. The reason I ask is because I moved some libraries around, and it seems to me `make' was still building against the contents of the directories prior to my rearrangements. Anybody know if this makes sense? STH

SuSE kind of supports Gnome, but people like James Ogley (james_at_usr-local-bin.org) got so disgusted he started his own Gnome rpm depository where he puts the new packages he has built. http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk/ James is our resident expert on Gnome. I use SuSE's. Given you are are running SuSE 8.2 I would start out with the KDE from the CD/DVD. Only after i got that running would I consider upgrading to to a stable version. Even then, if you have been reading this list you know that some people have been experiencing problems with KDE 3.2 (in fact there is one thread: "Is KDE 3.2 ready for prime time?" ) I use "kpackage" to install a lot of my rpm's. You are probably using something else. But use something which shows you if all the dependencies are being meet. If they are not find out why. You may need to install something else, or compile your own package. I strong recommend not using "rpm --force" in it's many incarnations. I know lot's of users do, I don't as a policy. (I have used "--oldpackage" and i keep my rpms so I can re-install) The other thing to do is make sure your box is up to date on security patches using fou4s (my choice), YOU, apt, red carpet or whatever.... NVidia Drivers

Hey Newbie, Take a chillpill and relax. Nvidia is the most Linux friendly company out there. If the Web Site is confusing just remember they are trying awfully hard to pleas an awful lot of people's different Os's and distros. I do not know of any other company which even comes close when it comes to Linux support. When I run ldconfig I usually do it in the verbose mode (ie "ldconfig -v" ) but there are lots of other options including "expert" options. However, depending on how you moved the libraries, what you may be seeing is some "old" symbolic links. You may need to remove them, but carefully. You might want to do a little googling. I found an article: "How To Upgrade the Libraries without Trashing the System" http://www.unixguide.net/linux/faq/05.06.shtml That talks about how to deal with the symbolic link issue. Gaim Misbehaving Again

I am running Gaim 0.75 under SuSE 9 Pro. It suddenly stopped working (will not connect, no error message, just sits at the connecting window) yesterday. I notice that YaST shows a Security Patch for 0.67 but that version of Gaim was unstable in the experience of many -- esp. given the tinkering of Yahoo. Will that security patch work OK for 0.75? Any ideas what might be tripping up Gaim this time? Thanks! dmc

Font shadowing in KDE 3.2

I'm probably missing a long discussion as I just subscribed to the list: (I was out on an adventure trying different distros and broke my mail) However, I'm kind of stuck on one element of the NVIDIA video card problem: According to ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/XFree86/nvidia-installer-H… I should download kernel sources and the like to install the driver. That didn't work at all. Then I hit the SuSE database and found another entry where you just manually select the fetchnvidia driver package and reboot (I never heard of rebooting a Linux box, but OK) Now, how do I verify if I really do have 3D support? SAX2 says I don't have it. Do I? The FTP site said to ignore the 3D errors I would get.... Since the fTP site directions didn't work 100% I'm less than confident.

KDE 3.2: tiny font for Google under Konqueror

For some reason the font on the Google web page under KDE 3.2, using Konqueror (3.2.0) is really tiny. It wasn't tiny under KDE 3.1. That font size seems to be unaffected by the font settings under Konqueror's Settings, although I can enlarge it temporarily with View. Is there a way to enlarge it permanently?

Lost window thingy on taskbar after KDE 3.2 upgrade

I upgraded to KDE 3.2, which was kinda painless, but I lost my window thingy that was on the taskbar. I'm taking about the thing on the taskbar that shows apps that are open....not the pager. Lost sound with KDE 3.2

One of the side effects of installing KDE 3.2 is that I've lost the sound. The problem started when I logged in and got a segment violation from, I think, artsd (or whatever it's called). I couldn't get further without disabling it (one of the choices offered in the dialog). How can I reenable it and get my sound back? Or should I be doing something else? Paul Abrahams

Dumb Question

As any of you who have subscribed to this list for any time at all, a massive amount of email collect rather rapidly. At the risk of starting another flame war, what do you do with all of that? My mail folder is currently about 84MB, with over 20,000 emails. I have plenty of space on my hard drive. Is it best to leave it be, or is there some sort of archive nethod? Hi again, I have being trying next: 1.- I download and infected mail with the virus. 2.- Execute the strings command on the attached exe file. 3.- I write down "key" keys. For example: sco.com CurrentVersion rundll32.exe Next is my doubt: 4.- I try to add a /etc/postfix/body_check list to reject mail containing those strings but since mail is send encoded with MIME base64 I first convert them with a command similar to before: echo "sco.com" | perl -MMIME::Base64 -ne 'print endoce_base64($_)' Step 4 fails because is the strings are not correctly encoded with my perl "microscript" and so mail is not rejected. Any idea how to do it? Thanks in advance for any help!

Would you be so kind as to tell me exactly what you did to get your wireless working in 10 minutes? I have spent 2 days working on it and it still isn't working. I just got a Fujitsu S6120D laptop and put SuSE 9.0 on and want to use the wireless. I am dual booting with WinXP and the wireless is working on the WinXP part. I have a builtin Atheros 802.11G. I've looked on the SuSE Website (2hours on a dialup) and can't see anything relating to why SuSE changed the bootloader or anything on why one is better than the other. Not yet having a copy, i'm just wondering if anyone has a thought or two on this. I've looked on sourceforge but can't see any reason either. As someone with five operating systems on my test/development machines with variations for each in LILO I really don't want to have to start again. scsijon

Printing problems - printing off the top edge of paper

I have a printer (HP LaserJet 2100M) connected to a (red hat *cough*) Linux Samba Server. I have had it in this configuration for years. I have a SuSE 8.2 desktop box that is configured to print to that printer. Everything works perfectly, every time. I have a SuSE 9.0 notebook configured to print to that printer. It worked fine... until about a month ago. I didn't (that I remember) make any changes to the configuration. It may have happened after an online update, but I don't know. paper = US Letter all configurations are set to the correct settings. Correct printer. Correct paper. Correct tray. Correct everything. I've gone through the printer configuration, on both ends about 5 times looking for an error. The page is bring printed (from this machine ONLY) about an inch off the top of the page. Now, IF I print from OpenOffice, it prints perfectly. If I print from ANYTHING that going through LPR, it prints off the top edge. Could there be a setting in a config file that's throwing me off? Is there something that I'm missing? I just installed Rhytmbox using Synaptic and the APT repository at usr-local-bin. Dylan, I understand what you are saying, howver my ISP is MSN and microsoft is infamous in its withholding of info even to microsoft users , contacting Micrsoft Corp is very dificult, then finding someone who can answer your question becomes another hurdle. Has anyone here successfully installed KDE 3.2 on a SUSE 8.2 box with Ximian Desktop 2 installed? They have a couple packages that overlap (libxslt, libxml,libart_lgpl) and don't want to screw up either setup. If you've been able to do this, whose KDE packages did you use? KDE's or SUSE's? Are there other things off of SUSE's FTP servers you needed to install to be completely up to date? Shutdown Problem --Post Update

Before using 'YOU' I was able to touch the off switch & I'd auto-logoff KDE and the box would shut down. Post 'YOU' touching the off switch auto-logs off KDE and brings me to the using login prompt, instead; then, when I choose 'shutdown' I am prompted for the root PW before the box will shut down. Why would this be?? I have checked the settings within KDE & the 'powermanagement' file and they seem to be unchagned. Anyone else had this problem, or did I unknowingly change something else that caused this? Thanks... ...CH

Comcast and NAT

In another post I commented that I had trouble yesterday with what seems to be Comcast blocking ports 21 and 80 so I couldn't serve ftp or http. I mentioned this to my brother who said he remembers reading somewhere that Comcast is "going after people running NAT" but he didn't remember any more. Has anyone else heard this? After converting to KDE 3.2 using red-carpet I discovered that the login screen announces I'm running SuSE 8.2 when in fact I am running SuSE 9.0. Typing "uname -a" yields Linux suillus 2.4.21-166-athlon #1 Wed Jan 7 03:05:30 UTC 2004 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux which includes no SuSE version info at all. How can I update the SuSE version info? Quota problem

I've just updated my system via the online update, and now I get this report when checking quota: olga:~ # quota -v ingrid quota: WARNING - Kernel quota is newer than supported. The user "ingrid" has 400+ files that occupies about 500+ MB of disk space on these two volumes, still the quota reports nothing at all? Can someone please point out to me what can be wrong here? I'm a novice with Linux and need a little help with some basic stuff. I want to install my Zip drive, Ive plugged it in and when I open Yast 2 the hardware information can see it. So I'm hearing about SuSE 8.1 users installing KDE 3.2. I've looked for the update but can't seem to find it.. SuSE9/USB on Intel Desktop Board D865GBF (2)

Hi. I just installed Suse 9.0 on my box which run RH8 before. First of all - my previous Linux distro (RH8) worked fine and I didn't encounter any of the problems described below. My board came with BIOS P07. Unfortunately, this version isn't compatible with SuSE9, for instance, Suse memory test (available from boot screen) always halted my box. Therefore, I had to upgrade to P13. This BIOS is buggy in code which detects IDE devices, so I finally downgraded to P10. The point is, that I want to connect my HP2210PSC (USB). Unfortunately, as soon as the system starts up the autodetection phase, I cannout move the mouse pointer, and everything is frozen. I already disabled all extra USB features available in BIOS, but it does not help at all. My questions are simple: 1) where can I get the fixed USB modules (drivers+tools)? 2) how can I downgrade my current USB modules to those shipped with RH8? 3) any thoughts what can I do to connect HP2210PSC under Suse9? SuSE 9.0 and S-ATA RAID

Hello all, While I'm considering updating from 8.2 to 9.0, I am wondering if a S-ATA RAID configuration is supported, either as software RAID or through chipsets found on motherboards. Crystal Semiconductor soundcard

Hi List: I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 on which I am trying to configure SuSE 9.0. The only hitch so far is the soundcard. It is detected as a Crystal Semiconductor sound card and the sound module that the installation chose is cs4236. This machine ran SuSE 8.2 before which worked just fine out of the box with sound and all. Upgrading to 9.0 was possible, but when the kernel was rebooted I ended up with a kernel panic upon loading the sound module. The sound system yields an audible crackling sound when the module gets loaded and then the system hangs. T41 and SuSE 9.0

I am trying to do a network installation of SuSE 9.0 Pro on my T41 (2379DJU). I am repeatedly getting the following messages in syslog: ACPI-0297: *** Error: AE_TIME while evaluating method [_L18] for GPE[ 0] ACPI-0345: *** Error: Handler for [EmbeddedControl] return AE_TIME ACPI-1121: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_.GPE._L18] (Node cdff1fa0), AE_TIME This happened with normal installation boot and with "pci=noacpi" boot parameter. With normal installation boot, installation proceeded up to 90% thru SuSEconfig but then apparently hung. All the way thry the cursor control was very shakey (probably lag). With the "pci=noacpi" boot, cursor control was good, but at some point switched to text install from the initial GUI install. It is running extremely slowly, like something critical hangs and then times out. Any hints, URLs, etc. appreciated. Jeffrey

Displaying a Banner at startup

Is it possible to display a banner at the startup of KDE? We currently have an NT machine that, when you CTRL-Alt-Del to get the Login dialog, displays a banner first that discloses the acceptable use of the machine for Government purposes. This message is several hundred characters in length. We need to do the same thing before logon for Linux boxes we're adding. Loud Speakers Hissing after install of KDE 3.2

Good Day, Since install KDE 3.2 my SLP 9.0 i386 AMD Athlon has been spitting constant hissing noises. My sound cards is an Ensoniq AudioPCI ES1371. Any combination of kmixer modifications do not disable the hissingf. If I play a video with sound, the sound is fine until the video is over and then hissing. I have tried configuring ALSA 0.9 with alsactl and kcontrol->Sound->Sound System. When sounds in enabled during boot (via I believe /etc/init.d/alsasound) the hissing starts before KDM comes up. If I issue a: /etc/init.d/alsasound stop as root, the kicker dies and so does my xterm. This all started with the install of KDE 3.2. I have changed back from ALSA to OSS. Is anyone else experiencing this behavior? Does anyone have any suggestions? I recently downloaded Kylix 3 Open Edition from Borland and I am wondering does anyone know where I can find a book that covers the C++ part of this program. I have searched the major book sites and can only find books that deal with Delphi. I am learning C++ and any books covering Kylix 3 would be helpful as long as they deal with C++. Kbear not working after kde 3.2 upgrade

I have had the same problem with the kde 3.2 beta release: after installation, kbear can be launched, but all ftp sites are greyed out in the ftp manager and it is impossible to connect to any ftp site. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, to no avail. Mplayer ASF streams problem: Update

After reporting that the mplayer plugin for Mozilla seemed not work --and some sleep-- I attempted an asf audio stream using mplayer from the command line. That one works,though it takes roughly 20 seconds or so before starting (the mplayer plugin was given several minutes and would still emit no sound). Any ideas what might be going on, here? RPM Repository?

Hi there, Is there perhaps an RPM repository similar to that of freshrpms.net for SuSE at all? I'm looking for newer versions of certain packages that YAST doesn't seem to have..... For example Eterm.......current version is 0.9.2........yast seems to think eterm-0.9-766 is the current. Still getting use to the whole YAST thing........maybe an easier way to get newer versions installed using YAST?? --Alan

Can't startx from runlevel 3

Hi: Suse 8.1 I close my X session, then CTRL-Alt-F1 and log in as root, then init 3. Then I go to Alt-F2 and log in as my normal user. When I startx I get to the serpentine pattern of X before it starts a windowmanager, and it sits there with the X in the middle, which I can move around, but that's it. The WINDOWMANAGER is set to /usr/X11R6/bin/kde If I log into an extra user account which has never been used for anything, that user can startx and gets KDE. So something must be corrupted in the main user. Running the system in init 5 there is no problem for the normal user, the kdm login appears, the user logs in, and KDE runs. How can I fix this so I can run X from the CLI in runlevel 3? Thanks. -- ____________________________________ Christopher R.
