"JDB barrier-based sync failed" how serious?

I have SuSE 9.2 on an old Athlon 1.1 system, with two identical 30GB hard drives. One has the "/" and "/boot" partitions, and the other has the "/swap" and "/home" partitions. I'm using ext3, only because I saw some warnings in this list about problems with Reiserfs that I previously used for a few years. Following a recent YOU update, I was having slowdowns and glitches (the system had been up for two or three months), so I shut it down the other night and restarted the next morning. I was unable to load from HD, and unable to repair. I kept getting this message during startup: "JDB barrier-based sync failed on hda3 - disabling barriers" Google gives exactly one hit on that. I re-installed from DVD (including allowing YOU to bring the system up-to-date). At the next reboot, I get the "barrier-based sync failed" message again, but at least the system is currently working (and I"m writing this in KMail). My question is: Am I more likely looking at a kernel-related issue, or a hard-disk hardware problem? I'm considering walking across the street to my friendly neighborhood computer store and buying a replacement hard disk for HDA. There have been no complaints from the system about HDB (which I mentioned is the same model as HDA). But if this is system/kernel related, then I'd be wasting my money. What do the wise ones say? SOCKS Problems

Though I have *finally* succeeded in actually getting dante-server --a.k.a., socks5-- to start I continually get an error regarding the IP addresses I am attempting to use. The network is on 192.168.xxx.xxx & I never know what the IP address will be for my ISP until I dial into same. So... I am really puzzled what should be in the place of 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' in the following part of my config file: == # The server will bind to the address 10.1.1.1, port 1080 and will only # accept connections going to that address. internal: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port = 1080 # Alternatively, the interface name can be used instead of the address. #internal: eth0 port = 1080 # all outgoing connections from the server will use the IP address # 195.168.1.1 external: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx == I am a little concerned about the 'method' area, as well, since sockd seems to have been compiled w/o libwrap ...and there seems no available source. HW Raid diagnostics

I did a Suse Professional 9.1 (x86_64) installation on Compaq Proliant ML350G4 with Smart Array 641 (with Raid1). Every bit of hardware was detected successfully, but now I'm looking for a diagnostics tool for Raid. The server is going to be located in server hotel so I can't have everyday look at the console lights that both HDD:s are online, so I have to be able to get this information through programs. Does anyone have any tools to do this (I don't need anything for configuration, just for diagnostics)? Haven't yet tried if ADU/ACU provided by HP works (there isn't version for Suse Pro). Have been crawling around the net for this but nothing has been right yet. I'll be buying the SLES if there isn't any other way. With regards, J

Kaspersky aveserver v5.0.5

I'm about to install Kaspersky AV v5.0.5 on my 9.2 box, however, they do not provide any start/stop script to put into /etc/init.d that will start and stop the aveserver daemon component. Is there anybody out there who have any ideas on the script? Anders.

Software Suspend (swsusp) in SuSE 9.2

I followed all of the instructions for configuring it, but when I run "powersave -U" to suspend, I get the error "suspend2disk failed on unloading 'aic7xxx'. Trying to recover..." All of my hard disks are SCSI, and the aic7xxx module mentioned in the error message is the driver for my Adaptec 29160N SCSI controller. I've looked in various list archives (most notably the swsusp2 lists) and it appears as though STD may not be supported when a system includes SCSI disks. Can anyone confirm or deny this, or perhaps point me at a resource that will explain how to get this working on my configuration? Updating 9.1 components to 9.2

I tried to update some 9.1 components to 9.2, using the mirror sites, and discovered that the directories for 9.2 seem to be organized very differently from those for 9.1 and earlier. The result was that I couldn't convince the 9.1 version of Yast to accept the 9.2 directories as a valid source. Is there a way around that? Paul

I posted this to the amd64 list, but am not getting any results yet, so I'll repost is here. Hopefully the problem is not specific to amd64, but some know behavior in which alsaconfig modifies some config file/permissions I can't seem to be able to trace. I had my SB Audigy 2 ZS almost completely working (a couple of games were giving me trouble), but I decided (quite regretfully) to manually run alsaconf. As a result I get no sound output now. Even running yast2 sound again, and rebooting. All cable connections were rechecked, and volumes in kmix and alsamixer and in my speakers are up. yast finds the card and everything. But everytime I try to test the volume nothing happens. No audio apps seem to be working. This is stock SuSE 9.2 64bit, completely patched. The card's IRQ is 185. I'd really appreciate some help. Scanning with Epson multifunction cx6400 Suse 9.1

Any suggestions on how to get the scanning function to work? I believe I have the epson.conf and dll.conf files configured properly. The scanner is connected via usb (libusb). sane-find-scanner locates the scanner. scanimage -L also finds the scanner but identifies it as an epson PX-A650 flatbed scanner. >From both the command line and xsane, when I try to scan I get an error message "invalid argument" I get the same result running as root or in a user account. Any and all suggestions and comments will be appreciated.

Mailserver what does and what?

I am investigating setting up my own personal email server to collect emails from my ISP and then view them via a local IMAP store accessible via Mozilla Thunderbird on either my network laptop or desktop. I have heard words like Fetchmail, Postfix, Procmail, clamav and SpamAssassin. however what is the 'correct order' of configuring them ie you don't want to configure the email viewer before you've decided what is fetching it? Hence, this is how I am envisioning the process: Fetchmail only retrieve email from the ISP and it can place it either in the IMAP store or route it to Procmail. It is configured bu going to Yast->Network Services->MTA. Postfix seems to both receive and send email but its exact purpose is unknown, other than it is a MTA/ Procmail, from my reading seems to be a glorified filter mechanism to sort email. Considering I have extensive filters customized into my current Mozilla Mail client that will be imported into Thunderbird, I hard;y think Procmail is necessary. I would assume its use is if more than a single email account's email is collected? clamav is an antivirus mechanism which will be used as Windows clients(my laptop) will be accessing the IMAP store. SpamAssassin is a spam combat tool and should be called into service before the antivirus. So therefore the procedure would be?: 1) A cron job starts pppd and connects to my ISP. 2) Postfix sends any 'Outbox' email. 3) Fetchmail then receive all incoming mail 4) Fetchmail passes it with what to SpamAssassin 5) SpamAssassin passes the messages using ?......? to clamav to check for viruses. 6) Clamav passes the checked email to the IMAP store using ?,,,,,,? putting the spam into the Thunderbird Junk folder and the virus messages into the Deleted Items, leaving all messages UNREAD. What operates in between each step to call the next step ie once the mail has been sent what tells fetchmail to retrieve email? Damn confused and I have looked at tldp.org and not found anything that explains it step for step, or even jump by jump for SuSE 9.2 I have browsed Google till I am blue in the eyes and still nothing. I have setup fetchmail with my own ISP settings on my 9.2 box via Yast->Network Services->MTA. PLENTY more still to be done and learn, so any help appreciated. P.S: I would like to stay as much as possible with packages on the 9.2 DVD/CD's and from what I have seen I will be staying away from sendmail, unless of course it is REALLY needed.
