Problem with KDE 3.1.3

SuSE8.1 was running KDE 3.0.1 without any problems. Thuis evening I upgraded my laptop and my linux tower to KDE 3.1.3. No problems with the laptop, but when I go to open X on the tower I get the error message: could not start kdeinit check your installation What do I do? Amy help will be much appreciated, as I really really prefer KDE over Gnome. Thanks in advance

proxy user authentication

hello, I got an unusual request today. I site wants to control internet access for it's users (a school). They are having a lot of problems with microsoft viruses/worms as well as trying to stop P2P stuff like Kazaa. They would like to only let users who have been authenticated have internet access. They currently have routers doing DHCP for IP addresses, so anyone can plug into the network and get out. So...after thinking about this for a while, I started thinking about using a decent PC box running Suse with the Susefirewall, a few NICs and squid. The next thing became setting up squid so it can do user authentication before giving internet access, after some research I see that I'd have to use one of the mod_auth_db or mod_auth_mysql modules. Since it's a school with a bunch of kids, I started wondering about how to control user accounts and passwords. For sure, I'd have to use mysql or something like it for the ACL's and accounts/passwords. Then, I was wondering about an intranet management website for this system, I've seen some CGI scripts for this. So, the kids would come into school, sign in at the front desk, their info gets entered into the system - at this point so they can get a user account and password. The password would only last a few months and expire. The susefirewall would control what traffic is allowed in ( I have to also figure out a way to stop Kazaa or other P2P sharing), the squid running proxy authentication would give only authenticated users access to the internet. I don't want the internal machines to see each other (helps to reduce spread of viruses) so I block microsoft file sharing ports (135, 139, etc.). The kids have no rights or say over the network! My goal is to make it as fast and reliable as possible, if some microsoft windows functionality is lost, so be it. The last thing is monitoring of IP addresses....I have to come up with a log monitoring system that catches any IP addresses that are being used too much (being abused - either virus, worms, P2P file-sharing, etc) and stop them. The user account using that IP address would be emailed or called by the school and told that their account has been disabled. Of course, they'll know it's been disabled before the school will! So, the school just has to wait for them to call. I recall seeing pflog or some name like that which does log monitoring........is this correct? I'd have to figure out a way to parse the logs and if an IP address shows up too frequently within a period of time, that IP address needs to be blocked somehow. Basically...from what you see, am I on the right track? Any hints, advice, experiences trying to tame crazy microsoft windows machines are all welcome ! :) Oskar

hmm. Abiword is disappointing ..

Wow. I started using Abiword 2.0 today since it appeared so nice. But when I opened this tiny (16 page) .doc file it snapped up 100% of the cpu just changing the font of the document and never recovered. I've just edited the hell out of the same document in OO 1.1rc4's writer and it just hummed along. :/ I guess abiword isn't that good with plain no macro word docs created in OpenOffice. :/ Anyway... /end rant of disappointment. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

Envelope_from and normal header from.

Hi, I'm thinking about how can I modify my "header from" (the one seen above), while at the same time leaving the "envelope from" intact - as this is the one used by the list software to post mail to the list and allow me in. I was told that mutt can do it - but the mutt interface pisses me: I simply do not know what to do there even to see my mail! q:Quit d:Del u:Undel s:Save m:Mail r:Reply g:Group ?:Help ... ---Mutt: /var/mail/cer [Msgs:0]---(reverse-date/date)-----------------(all)--- I know that mutt is a good program - it has to be. But my firs OS was, I confess, MsDos (and a bit of CP/M and a Vax). I Lent with programs like wordstar 3 and Turbo Pascal, with magnificent user interfaces, so... I'm not too used to spartan or user unfriendly interfaces. O:-) So... any other way to do the trick? I normally use Pine, but I also use sometimes (depending on to whom I write) balsa, kmail, and mozilla/netscape. Is there something that could be changed in postfix to do the trick? An intermediate filter? anything? Is there any "further reading" I could read to learn more about all this? Ideas out there? System is SuSE 8.2, not up full time, no full network connection, but a modem now and then, and no internet domain name. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Audio cd ripping - permissions problem?

I've got a problem in ripping audio tracks off my cd-rom that appears to be permissions related. Normally, I can work this sort of thing out myself, but this has got me stumped, so I thought I'd let the experts on this list set me straight. When I try to use k3b for ripping an audio cd, k3b sees all the tracks on the cd but fails when it tries to copy any to my hard drive. Thinking this was a problem with k3b, I tried another ripper - abcde. This again failed with the message that it had received an error from cdparanoia. So now I tried cdparanoia. X error

I have a machine running SuSE 8.2, when I type "startx" it comes up with and error saying "fatal server error: Caught signal 7. Server aborting" after a few lines it says parse error: line 1 of stdin Errors encountered in stdin; not compiled. X10: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with - events remaining. Anyone have an idea of whats going on with this machine?

Fonts ( More Weirdness )

Okay, if I go into the fonts directory, and run mkfontscale and mkfontdir Then restart X via switching to init 3, and back. Staroffice can see all the fonts again! Both type1 and TT. But... KDE can now only see TT fonts. They preview fine in the font installer, they show as activated in the X11 font directory, but KOFFICE apps and others can only see TrueType fonts... If I run SuSEConfig --module fonts, then.... KDE can see all the fonts, Type1 and TT But staroffice and anyone else can't see any fonts encoded as adobe-fontspecific, adobe-standard, or iso10646. So the bug is somewhere in SUSE's setup... -- The Meek shall inherit the Earth, for the Brave are among the Stars!

Hello folks: I am running a single server hosting several domains, websites, email and email lists etc. I am a bit nervous about have a catastrophic failure that takes the service down for as long as it takes me to rebuild things from backups. I have a second box running the same version of SuSE. I thought it would be cool to be able to have an automated method that keeps the second box ( secondary backup box ) updated with the current files on the main server. Any suggestions how to achieve this? Could it be as simple as using the "mirror" program? Rsync? -Jim-
