DVD Writer under SuSE
Hello, I would like to know if DVD writers (more precisely Plextor PX-708A or Sony DRU-510A) work under SuSE 8.1/8.2 ? With which software ? Thanks, Fred
It has been my experience that most all of the DVD+RW writers will work without any problems for normal CDR/RW media using the normal cdrecord software on the generic scsi devices. In fact I recommend that you have the drive working in this mode before proceeding on to the more difficult operations. If you are looking to use it for the DVD+RW type operation, then please visit this web site; http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW The author here offers some programs that will allow the formatting of the DVD+RW media and burn ISO images. I have several of the HP dvd100i units myself and one DRU-500A in the field. I use the drives also for doing backups using the tar command and an available program called "sdd" that aligns the buffers correctly through the raw device. This mode of operation WILL require a kernel patch to be applied and a new kernel to built and installed. I did at one time attempt to copy a single layer DVD by using sdd to read the DVD image and then use sdd to write it to a DVD+RW with success. This operation also requires a kernel patch. You may be able to use cdrecord-ProDVD I think it is called to burn DVD media more like normal CD's. It is available from the following site; http://www.fokus.fhg.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/... I did try this program and it was working. I say was because I never have much need for this type of functionality. Perhaps it will be of some help. James On Thursday 18 September 2003 16:22, Sparrox wrote:

Yes, they should work.
With which software ?
The usually suspects: cdrtools (formerly cdrecord) and cdrdao. For the frontend, you can use k3b. IIRC, you might need to use k3b CVS though for DVD's. Charles -- There are no threads in a.b.p.erotica, so there's no gain in using a threaded news reader. (Unknown source)
