Changing IP address

I have a reqmnt to switch from a DHCP to a static IP on my laptop all the time. In Red Hat, it is very simple to do this using "System Settings --> Network " from the main menu. How do I do this on Suse 8.2? For now, I am forced to change the ifcfg-<device> file under /etc/sysconfig/network. -Shesh

Samba 3.0

I see that Samba 3.0 was released yesterday. Hopefully Lars Muelle (IIRC) will post a SuSE 8.2 rpm soon so we can start experimenting with it. I know it is supposed to have the ability to fully participate in a AD domain, but that is about the limit of my knowledge. Anyone know anything about it from a bug persective? I'm thinking of putting it on a test server to see how it does, but if it has a bunch of known bugs, there is no point. Greg -- Greg Freemyer

Nvidia and Suse 8.2 Black screen with 3d

Hi guys, I am really having trouble getting the Nvidia drivers to work in Suse 8.2 with 3d enabled. I am using a MSI motherboard MS-6738 which does have an on board graphics card but its disabled when a graphics card is plugged into the Agp slot. There is no option in the bios to manually turn the on board gfx card off. I have a Geforce 2 mx400 plugged into the agp slot. I have tried ver 4349, 4363 and 4496 but they all do the same thing. When ever I try to start X after enabling 3d i get a black screen and cant see or do anything. I am able to telnet into my Suse 8.2 box and kill X. If I then run the switch2nv script i can then start X with no problems but as soon as I try switch2nvidia the same thing happens again. Black screen with no response except via telnet. Toshiba DVD-RAM SD-w2002 hangs system

The recent Toshiba DVD-RAM thread reminds me that I need to ask about a problem I had with my toshiba dvd ram. I'm using ext2 filesystems on my dvdrams. It seems that small transfers work fine, and reads work fine, however when someone tries to copy a large amount of data to the dvdram the machine works fine for awhile, but the load average gets higher and higher until the machine becomes unresponsive. A few times the machine has come back, if I recall correctly, but this has made the dvdram pretty useless for the reason we got it (backup). I'm running SuSE-8.1. I've been meaning to sic vmstat on it, but haven't gotten around to it yet, as I'd have to install the dvdram again. Has anyone else had similar problems with dvdrams? Any solutions? Thanks -Ben

konsole "default" font

Hello... How does "konsole" get it's settings for "normal", "tiny", etc.? How can I change them? Somehow, my upgrade to 3.1.4 seems to have changed my default konsole font to some awful-ugly font, and I'd like to change it. Yes, I know that I can set it to a "custom" font, but I'd like to be able to change the whole "family", so that secting "large" or "medium" will change to a different font in the same family (or whatever word you'd use). I've tried grepping through .kde, etc., and I just can't figure out how to set it. Thanks much in advance! -Nick

help: kdm killed xd2??

Hi everyone, I installed XD2 last night on SuSE 8.2 from vmware. everything worked just fine and i could log into it last night from gdm. this morning however gdm was gone and the irritating kdm reappeared. it has no mention of Gnome2 or any gnome for that matter and compulsively tries to log me into KDE. Now I don't understand what's happening because red-carpet shows me that all the xd2 files are properly installed. so two questions -- 1. how do i start xd2 now? 2. how do i get rid of kdm and return to gdm? thanks a lot, eugene.

Cron can't stop mpg123

I'm using 55 05 * * * mpg123 /windows/H/V*.mp3 ...to play the songs by Vangelis at 5:55AM. It works fine, but I can't use Cron to stop this process, can I? Thanks for any help a.

Why Very Slow DNS on 8.2, But Not on WinXP?

Anyone know why name resolution using my cable provider's nameservers is impossibly slow on a standard untweaked 8.2 install, but quite fast with WinXP on the same machine, same provider, same nameservers? I see the same slowness whether or not my firewall is running, and whether or not I'm running a local cacheing nameserver. Thanks.

Problems with ASUS MOBO....

Anybody gotten the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe to work with SuSE Linux 8.2??? System: MOBO ASUS A7N8X Deluxe MEM 2x 512MB 333 PC7200 CPU AMD AthlonXP 3000+ (333) VGA Saphire ATI Radeon 9600 PRO It's up and running. But without the build in 3Com en NVidia network port, no sound and no 3D for the ATI. And no update's applied. Which kernel do i need to get network and sound on the MOBO to work ??? (2.4.21/2.4.22/2.6.0). What do I have to do to get 3D gaming to work??? Stefan. Thank In Advance.

Hi all, I am working with postfix & cyrus-imap on SuSE8.1 How do I get sieve running? I have followed /usr/share/doc/packages/cyrus-imapd/doc/install-sieve.html including the example-script at the end. The problem is that test-mails do get through straight to my inbox instead of being rejected. I send those messages with the from-header info(a)waidele.biz which is the from-address that should be sieved out. Is there a step-by-step howto that combines the bits & pieces neccessary to get sieve running? Locating cause of signal

I'm having a problem with a signal, (SIGHUP), killing a running daemon, pppd! How do I find the cause of the signal, so I can stop it from happening??? I have tried debugging my connection, and nothing jumps out. Everything is clean around the timeframe of the signal. I have tried strace, yet within the time I need to trace, I would have over 65,000 lines of output. Thanks Andreas, I downloaded the qt-x11-2.3.0.tar.gz from www.trolltech.com (it's hidden on their ftp site, so you must assume that there is a source directory under the root /qt directory: ftp.trolltech.com/qt/source/qt-x11-2.3.0.tar.gz) It looks as if qt-devel isn't distributed with SLES7. Raid help

Hi there folks! I am about to create a filesharing server which will have the following characteristics PIII-350 128 MB ram HD1 : 10 GB HD2 : 30 GB HD3: 30 GB The whole idea is to have SuSE Linux 7.2 on HD1 and make HD1 & HD2 Raid1 with Software-Raid to have complete rebundancy. I have never done this before. I would really appreciate any good manual, site, notes, www pages that you could recommend. I am feeling very nervous about this since I have never done anything similar in my life. Thank you all for your help!!!!!!! Chris

enable Laptop power management

I'm new at this and would like the battery monitoring abilities available in 8.2 to work. I found the part in the Kernel to turn on, but am unsure as to the procedure to 'make' after turning it on Could someone post the procedures and syntax I need to preform to do this correctly. Or... is it not worth the effort? Thanks in advance

If you get a SW for windows which can calculate the md5 sum and you run it over your ISO image file you should get a number.
