I just updated XFree86 in apt. I ran SuSEconfig. Now, I'm sure I need to restart x. How do I do this without rebooting? ( I think I asked this question before, but I can't find the answer in the archives.) Thanks, -=Thinker

log out and in again. Are more rough: <ctrl><alt><backspace> -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Simply log out and back in will restart X for you. But in order to be really certain you should drop to a text console with ctrl-alt-f1 after you've logged out, log in as root, run rcxdm restart, then back to the graphical login with ctrl-f7 and log back in

Anders, Is this the same thing as pressing ALT-e after logging out (once your at the graphical login screen)? Thanks, D.C.

I'm not familiar with that shortcut (I don't restart all that often :), but if that's the hotkey for "restart X server" then yes

You can do the brute force method. As Richard mentioned ctl+alt+bkspc--no finesse but effective. Or from a root terminal "/etc/init.d/xdm restart". Or you can reinitialize the whole runlevel which is the next best thing to restarting "telinit 1" then "telinit 5". This is usually overkill but I've used it to solve problems when I have trouble getting things to reinitialize. Of course you don't want to do that if you have network connections that you want to keep open. John S.
