ps command output regarding swapped processes

I have recently noticed that according to the ps command's output, all the Postgres processes are swapped to disk. E.g.: ps -ef | grep postgres postgres 1661 1 0 Jul18 ? 00:00:00 [postmaster] postgres 1665 1661 0 Jul18 ? 00:00:00 [postmaster] postgres 1666 1665 0 Jul18 ? 00:00:00 [postmaster] postgres 5984 1661 0 Jul27 ? 00:00:02 [postmaster] postgres 6057 1661 0 08:40 ? 00:00:00 [postmaster] postgres 6673 1661 0 09:30 ? 00:00:00 [postmaster] When I run top, the following is shown about 3 of the processes: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ SWAP Command 1661 postgres 15 0 492 192 140 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.29 300 postmaster 1665 postgres 15 0 424 64 52 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.05 360 postmaster 1666 postgres 15 0 544 220 216 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.08 324 postmaster Maybe I don't interpret this correctly or I don't understand it, but it shows that only part of those 3 processes's memory is swapped to disk. The other funny thing is that the ps command normally showed the command line info of the postmaster processes. I use it to see which users are using the DB. I only noticed last week that the ps command does not show any command line info about the postmaster processes. After some investigation, I saw that ps shows that about half of the processes (including vmware which is very active) is swapped out. This does not make sense. I also did a little test and ran a script that would run ps with a grep for postgres every second. Then I started runiing some bis queries on one of the databases. After a few minutes of hammering the database, ps did not once show a postmaster process to NOT be swapped out. Is this possible? This would mean that a postmaster process is swapped to RAM and back to disk within a second. Well, it will have to be swapped around several times, as I ran a few queries per second. Anybody seen something similar? ssh and limits.conf

Encountered a funny problem with openssh: if I add anything to /etc/security/limits.conf, I'll be unable to ssh to my machine. I've make sure that PAMAuthentic... in /etc/ssh/sshd_config is set to yes. And also enabling resmgr in /etc/pam.d/sshd. I found someone posting that this problem does not appear in version 3.4p1. -- -- Verdi March --

Digital Camera Permissions

Hello, I have a Kodak CX4230 camera. This camera is a PTP mode camera so it does not get recognized as a USB mass storage device and I have to use gphoto2 to access it. As root it works perfectly and I can access it using camera:/ in konqueror. If I log in as regular user and try to access the camera, I get the message "could not claim usb device". This seems to be a permissions problem but I don't know what to change the permissions of. thanks

Success with GRAMPS under SuSE 8.2

It seems the impossible has been made possible the last week. Gramps is running on SuSE-8.2! Although it seems rather normal that an application can be run on suse, in this case it is (was) far from trivial. I'll not go into the debugging details, but the outcome is that suse does not provide a package called pyorbit, that is necessary to prevent an incomplete python-gnome package to be shipped. Even after (re)building those packages it appears that some libraries had to be rebuild. Gramps started but it crashed. The other libraries have been rebuild and at the same time updated. I've provided this information to suse in the hope that suse will do something with it (hopefully updated pkgs will appear for 8.2......) Thanks go to Don Allingham (gramps main developer) and Jon Willeke (python/gnome expert). Now the main question, where is rpm? It can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.2-i386/RPMS.extra Due to the many dependencies, were some of the dependencies need to fullfill a certain version number: I want to advice to use the Advanced Package Tool to install all needed rpms (about 15-20). You need the apt component "extra" to install gramps. I really would like to see people installing and using gramps on suse-8.2, to compensate for the tough job we had to go through (Don even installed suse to debug this!). -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

/etc/security/limits.conf does not apply to KDE

Hi, how to force the setting on /etc/security/limits.conf to apply to user logon to KDE? Currently, the limits only apply to users login directly to tty. -- -- Verdi March --

Thanks Joe, This is more info than I could find, and suddenly all makes sense. In the documentation I always skip the part about creating your own rpm's because I didn't think that relevant to what I want to do. This includes the parts about spec files etc. I see however that this is closely related to building src rpm's. I am sure I now know enough to make sense of the man pages and howto's. Barcode Scanner with a HID (USB) interface

For some prototyping work I'm doing, does anyone know of a barcode scanner with a HID (USB) interface. I definately need it to be HID (Human Interface Device) compliant. I don't care about its long term health, I only need it to work for a couple of months. Since HID is a well-supported standard, I should not need drivers or Linux specific support. The only barcode format I need is "3 of 9". PS: My company is building up a 1000 or so custom barcode scanner's that are going to be HID compliant. (We needed a special feature that is apparently not on the market.) My eventual job is to write software to retrieve the barcode, but I want to start my testing with a basic scanner that is known to work. Thanks Greg -- Greg Freemyer
