Digital Camera

Trying to get my Agfa ephoto CL18 digital camera to work for the first time: I'm running SuSE 8.1 personal with k_athlon 2.4.19-66. I purposely used the usb port my scanner is connected to, because I know it works. - Tried to set up the camera in Yast - 'unable to initialize camera' - Tried to setup in gtkam - 'no camera detected' - Did dmesg - I couldn't find the camera there - Did cat /proc/bus/usb/devices - Not there either - Did cat /proc/scsi/scsi - nope - Tried to manually mount /dev/sda1 to /mnt/camera - '/dev/sda1 not a valid block device' - Also tried other devices (sdb, sdc...) - same results I googled and did a SDB search and found that my camera is supported (as evidenced in Yast and gtkam available camera selections). Found nothing definitive in my googling, short of rebuilding the kernel. I also did a search on the list and found a thread in February called [SLE] Digital Camera (second try). Followed this thread and tried everything in it that applied with exactly the same results this person had. It was never solved. Please help! I complained to one of our bench techs and he ran iometer against a SuSE 8.2 box. He ran iometer on RH boxes I think, definately not Macs. He found Samba to be 10x faster than NFS. I need ideas for Linux training course (OT)

Hi All! It is a nice coincidence that we have a headline "Indian president in favor of Linux". I have been approached by a training company in India to help develop course work for introductory Linux course (eventually advanced topics). In the first stage we will be developing a course for people who are moving up from Windows to Linux. That is, they have some basic computer knowledge (at least what is necessary to run Windows), so they need Linux-specifica. There are the obvious things like differences in commands/options, dual booting, SAMBA, and so forth. However, I would really appreaciate some brain storming ideas on what I could/should include. My partner tells me that India is pretty much "Microsoft country" and there are no companies that provide Linux training. This would be a great oppotunity to show IT people the power of Linux. Machine wont boot...

Help!! I configured my SuSE 8.2 machine to use LDAP authentication, now it wont boot. It gets to the second phase of SuSEfirewall, and hangs. It says: Warning: interface eth1 is not (yet?) active. My eth1 is a PCMCIA card, and it is present in the system. How can I force the system to boot? It just sits here....please help! Thanks in advance, Greg Jamison

A couple of questions re fundamentals

Hi all I just set up a minimalistic system, using SuSE 8.0. I have installed the bare minimum software, plus those things I intend the server to be used for: Apache, PHP, Perl, and Firebird. No X, KDE, etc. Having done this, I have come to realise how little I actually know about how Linux works "at low level". I therefore have a couple of questions which will, no doubt, reveal my ignorance to the world, but at the same time get me on the road to recovery from ignorance :-) 1. How do I set up Telnet? I mean that. From the beginning. What do I install and what files do I modify in order to get it working? 2. In order for Firebird to work, I had to install xinetd. When I did so, Yast told me I would have to set START_INETD to NO. Where do I do this? 3. Will xinetd automatically start at boot time? The reason I ask is that even after installing inetd and rebooting the system, I had to manually start it up. How do I ensure that these things start at boot time? 4. Following on from the above, what is the general rule for getting something to run at boot time? What file should you put the commands in? As usual, all comments and help appeciated. Over Freq Monitor after Install

I finished the entire YAST installation, including patches to the current packages. Yay! I did my reboot and when it came up, the monitor I had barfed with an Over Freq signal on the monitor and shut down. I put on another monitor and it worked OK, I logged into KDE. But... If I don't have an extra monitor available, how do I reconfigure X to a lower Freq Range since I can't run the GUI? I'm more than a little green on how Suse does this configuration management stuff. I've always used systems that are CLI configuration only. Can I launch something from CLI that is at least "safe" without too much trouble?

APIC settings

Hello I'm experiencing some trouble with interupts being lost from my cdrom while trying to rip audio cd. I notced my motherboard is using APIC mode in bios and my kernel (on suse 8.2) was initialy installed with CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC=y CONFIG_X86_UP_IOAPIC=y I would like to disable APIC (also change to PIC in BIOS) in linux and see if it has anything to do with lost interupts.. Haalp on Konqueror crash!

Dear Friends, I am a dedicated Linux user and have been using SuSE 8.2 since about three days. My past installations were 7.3 / 8.0 / 8.1 and 8.2 which I now use. However, on 8.2 whenever I try and open the home directory upon clicking on it the window pops up and then vanishes and I get another window that says: "The application Konqueror (konqueror) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)" I have installed everything that came with the CD's and have a AMD Duron with 256MB SDR, and Nvidia video board. I did check with the conflicts while installing the provisions yet maybe I am mistaken at some junction which you could solve for me. Please do haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalp and save Mua! CD mounting problems

On my desktop (8.2) I have my CD burner. I click on it to mount it and nothing happens. I right mouse on it and select mount, nada. I go to xterm and type 'mount /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder' and I get a message back saying only root can do that. Fine, I'll show you Mr. Computer...I su and do the same. Mr. Computer says to me: 'mount: block device /dev/cdrecorder is write-protected, mounting read-only /dev/cdrecorder: Input/output error mount: you must specify the filesystem type' I say to Mr. Computer, "Bite me!" then check my fstab. It says: /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 So what's the problem. I'm pretty pissed off at Mr. Computer. This episode reminds me of Office Space where the printer isn't working. Any help here? Also, sorry about the 'Mr. Computer' thing. I've been hanging around my kids too much. USB Memory card reader suddenly given up

I have been using a PQI memory card reader to transfer data from my digital camera to my hard drive (linux SuSE 8.2) for a while now. when I went to use it the other week, it popped up the icon on the desktop sde1 and it let me look at the root directory : dcim but if I tried to click on this, konqueror froze. I killed konqueror manually and i looked at the command prompt. If I try to go into dcim, it is successful, however, when i do an >ls I get a whole load of corruption and random characters over and over again followed by : is not a directory or something similar. The size of the files are wrong, they are reading at like 1GB when the card is only 64MB. I have got a brand new drive to see if it was faulty, but i get exactly the same effect. Can anybody say why this has suddenly given up? I was using a (faulty) 4 port hub before on my lapotp, now i have a working 7 port hub. I do get problems when the laptop doesn't enable the USB at startup, so i have to restart the computer, because linux senses there is a USB port, but can't access it (the lights don't come on brightly so the USB port isn't connecting with the devices). I don't think this is the problem though, as all of my other USB devices work fine. Xntp

After a great amount of work, I managed to get ntp running...I think. After configuring the IP address, I ran /etc/init.d/xntpd. I noticed it said "resetting time to IP ...." I tried to run 'ntpdate' and I got: ntpdate: no servers can be used, exiting. Do I need to run ntpdate? How and what do I setup to have my clock set itself on a monthly basis? Each machine should have its own disks with an "data" volume that should be mirrord in realtime between the machines. Can somebody guide me, what applikations should i use? Dail-out mailing: freeing up the mail queue

Hi Folks, The problem I've solved below may have bugged you too, so I'm sharing the solution. To set the scene: Probably like many of you, I do my email work "off-line" and then, when there is mail to be sent, I dial up to the ISP and send the mail (basically using "sendmail -q"). However, I've been bugged for ages by the fact that sendmail can lock some or all of the mail-queue files (as shown by asterisks when 'mailq' is run) for many minutes, which can block the queue for ages. My usual solution is simply to sit around until 'mailq' shows no asterisks, and then dial out and send, but I've also tried other, more drastic, approaches which have their disadvanrages. Yesterday, however, I got an idea (could have seen it years ago). What process is locking the queue? No doubt sendmail itself. So I did a 'ps -aux | grep sendmail' while the queue was locked. And there is was. First, check whether the queue is locked: # mailq Mail Queue (1 request) --Q-ID-- --Size-- -----Q-Time----- ------------Sender/Recipient------------ VAA00979* 16895 Tue Jun 3 21:09 efh (host map: lookup (<destination domain>): deferred) <list of recipient addresses here> So there it is locked (see "*"). Now check for what sendmail is up to: # ps -aux | grep sendmail root 160 0.0 1.1 1256 720 ? S May 23 0:00 sendmail: accepting root 1027 0.0 1.4 1336 940 ? S 21:11 0:00 sendmail: VAA00979: And there is sendmail working on "VAA00979", with process ID 1027. So now stop it: # kill -15 1027 And now see what has heppened: # mailq Mail Queue (1 request) --Q-ID-- --Size-- -----Q-Time----- ------------Sender/Recipient------------ VAA00979 16895 Tue Jun 3 21:09 efh (host map: lookup (<destination domain>): deferred) <etc> and there is it unlocked! Short, sweet, snappy and instantaneous. What I did above could very easily be implemented in a suitable script for sending mail as a batch job when dialling out, which I intend to do. So the "algorithm" is: Run 'mailq' and grep for any "*" If found, extract message identifiers (e.g. "VAA00979" from "VAA00979*") run 'ps -aux' and match on "sendmail: <identifier>", and extract its PID kill -15 PID Lines 3, 4 and 5 could be little 'awk' jobs, feeding the 'grep' output from line 1 to 'awk'. There it is. Any comments?
