He says " In question is the System 390 version of Linux, written by IBM. " when in fact it was SuSE who ported Linux to the S/390 Mainframe. They had hardware and support for this from IBM but it was SuSE who did it..hence SuSE being the only viable Linux port to run on these beasts. Other then that Cringely is one of the better pundits..but still a pundit nevertheless. ;) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org The IQ and the life expectancy of the average American recently passed each other going in the opposite direction.

Sorry Ben, but I beg to differ. Even though SuSE was an early adopter of
Linux/s390 and actively pushed the port forward, most of the kernel work
was done by IBM people in Boeblingen, Germany. SuSE just picked up the
work from IBM and continued from there, with lots of support from IBM.

No, that's not true. The port to S/390, specially porting the basic core stuff like kernel, gcc, binutils and glibc was done by and is still maintained by people from IBM. SuSE's part was (and is :) mostly the classic distributor's work, i.e. package it all in one distribution together with an installation program, integrate patches/code drops from IBM and so on.
