Interesting thoughts, but I almost have to wonder, (know that AT&T had stolen code from FreeBSD) did SCO copy the code from Linux, rather than what they claim? Lan Browsing problem

Hey, Ok, so I managed to get all the packages installed for KDE Lan browsing. My problem now is that I can't connect to my OSX G3. I see the IP address in the LAN Browser but clicking on it does nothing or gives me an error message. If I simply type smb://vmcg3 then I can get to it but clicking on the IP in the LAN Browser doesn't work. Any clues? Thanks, Vince

Samba security or is ftp better?

HI everyone. I want to hear your opinions as to the security of having samba running on my linux box. I have a small lan running behind a broadband router which acts as a firewall. I have a linux box (suse 8.2) which I use as an apache/php/mysql server. On the linux box is a personal website containing a very large photo album - I would like to have samba running to speed up the process of transfering files (photos) from a (ehhhh) win2k machine to the SuSE server. How much of a security threat would I be opening myself up to if I enabled Samba. My router blocks traffic, except port 80. Would it be safer / better to use a FTP server instead? XScreensaver Configuration

I'm using SuSE 8.2 and I am trying to configure the StarWars screensaver. I'm positive there is a way to change where it gets the text to display or to change the settings for the fortune cookie program, but just can't find it. Practically none of the screensavers have a setup dialog, and I've found XML files for them all in "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xscreensaver/config", except that in "starwars.xml" there's no mention or indication that it uses "fortune" for the text. Proxy settings in 8.2 and Win2000 network

I'd be grateful if someone could help me out here. I'm currently in Qatar on business, working in a hospital that runs a Windows 2000 network. I can have access to this, have a username and password, and the IT dept set up the Windows XP Pro installation on my laptop to use the proxy server on port 8080. I can surf the web from Windows OK but can't access my pop3 mail. I dual boot the laptop with 8.2, though and would prefer to use that. I have set up the NIC (DHCP) and proxy settings in YaST with the same settings as in Windows, but I can't access the internet. I have also set up the proxy in the browser (tried konqueror and mozilla). Despite specifying that konqueror should ask for a username/password as needed, it doesn't. I just get an error message, saying connection refused, authorisation error. What am I missing here in terms of set up? Interesting to note that System V was originally tainted by FreeBSD code, I just wonder if Caldera/SCO cut & pasted Linux code into System V? A lot of the functionality that they claim linux stole from System V, System V did not have in the first place. Remember, it used to be just a single Intel processor unix system. squid hung up

AutoFS and Zip Drive

Hello, I'm trying to set up autofs to handle mounting of all my drives. I have it working for the most part. My issue right now is that it doesn't allow writing to my Zip drive. I had the same issue with my floppy but I decided just to get rid of my floppy, I don't really use it anyway. Right now my auto.master file contains: /media /etc/auto.media --timeout 1 /windows /etc/auto.windows --timeout 60 And my auto.media file contains: cdrecorder -fstype=auto,ro,user,exec :/dev/cdrecorder dvd -fstype=auto,ro,user,exec :/dev/dvd zip -fstype=auto,user :/dev/hdg4 I took the options for the Zip drive from the fstab file generated by the installation. It automounts file when I enter the directory, it just won't let me write to it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Vincent

SuSE8.2 PHP+apache problem with gdlib

Anyone got gdlib to work on SuSE8.2 ? I installed apache, PHP, gd and gd-devel. When using PHP to generate a image no error shows - Dont know other ways of testing it. But the image looks like a broken image in webbrowsers . Any ideas ? Best wishes Jan Nielsen

Installation source cannot be set

Do not know why but after some changes I had made and some which I had to make I am in a mess with my SuSe 8.1. I had to change my video card and am not yet back in KDE. I was missing some programs and thought it a good idea to do that in console. Going into Yast I went to the software part and wanted to download some software from my cdrom. It did not work and after looking into the source of installation I found that there was no source mentioned. Simply adding did not work because Yast protested with an error and said it could not mount my cdrom. I would like to force an input but have no idea where this information is stored. Where is the file with the info and what should be written in it? -- " Every little BYTE helps " NTReader v0.36w(P)/Beta (Registered) in conjunction with Net-Tamer.

X Virtual Desktop Size (no SCO content)

Greetings, I'm posting this on behalf of a co-worker who recently installed SuSE 8.2 at home. He loves it except that his desktop is bigger than his display resolution. He hates having to scroll back and forth and up and down. I can't say that I blame him, either. I know this should be easy to fix, but I'm not sure what to look for in which X configuration file. I'm sure this question has been asked before, but here goes anyway... I'm trying to install a couple of apps on my newly installed SuSE 8.2 and I cannot install them becuase they require that root nteracts with X. One of the apps is Netscape. Method for searching list archives, more than 1 month at a time?

Is there a way to search the list archives for subjects and/or body content and be able to search more than one month at a time? I had an 8.0 installation die on me this morning (no /etc and hence no mtab/fstab/everything else), and I have a backup 7.3 installation that I can't figure out how to upgrade the base system to 8.0 or later without cds. Don't have access to my 8.0 cds anymore. I'd like to search the archives before hitting this list. TIA. Spell checking AWOL

Hi Folks, I have a SuSE 8.2 KDE 3.1.1 system that has been working fine for months. Spell checking has worked fine in KMail and KEdit. Now after a logout and logon spell checking refuses to work. Click 'tools' > 'spelling' yeilds a popup that says "ISpell/ASpell could not be started, make sure it is properly configured and in your path". But if it has been working correctly, and there has been no catastrophy, why does it fail out of the blue? I know there is an unresolved bug involving spell checking and KWrite but this is a new failure of a working feature. [OT] Latest nmap cans SCO (Unixware)

Due to SCO's attack against Linux and IBM nmap have drop support for Unixware. Here is a quote directly from the changelog: o SCO operating systems are no longer supported due to their recent (and absurd) attacks against Linux and IBM. Bug reports relating to UnixWare will be ignored, or possibly even laughed at derisively. Note that I have no reason to believe anyone has ever used Nmap on SCO systems. Unixware sucks. CPU operating temp while using SuSE8.2

I've noticed something odd with my computer since I've installed SuSE8.2. The idle operating temperature is about 10C higher than normal, and CPU load is almost zero (sitting idle). My case has a temp probe, and a digital display on the front. When running SuSE8.1 the idle CPU temp was around 39C. This was exactly the same as when sitting idle running Win2k on the same machine. BTW, it's an Athalon 1Ghz CPU if this bit helps. Since installing SuSE8.2, I've noticed the idle CPU temp as high at 50C. As a test, I just rebooted to Win2k and let it sit idle for 30 mins. CPU temp dropped to 39C. I rebooted to SuSE8.2, and let it sit idle (no applications running except KDE) for 30 mins, and the CPU temp is 46C. This is the output from top.... top - 18:35:58 up 25 min, 3 users, load average: 0.14, 0.22, 0.18 Tasks: 73 total, 3 running, 70 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.0% user, 1.0% system, 0.0% nice, 99.0% idle Mem: 709140k total, 345028k used, 364112k free, 37724k buffers Swap: 1052248k total, 0k used, 1052248k free, 198168k cached OK, I know... these temps are not in the critical range, but I am curious why the temperature difference. I haven't yet been able to find any reason for the higher CPU temp when running SuSE8.2. All fans are running. Anyone have any suggestions or pointers? What's different in 8.2 from 8.1 that would make the CPU temp rise? C.
