Hello, I'm trying to set up autofs to handle mounting of all my drives. I have it working for the most part. My issue right now is that it doesn't allow writing to my Zip drive. I had the same issue with my floppy but I decided just to get rid of my floppy, I don't really use it anyway. Right now my auto.master file contains: /media /etc/auto.media --timeout 1 /windows /etc/auto.windows --timeout 60 And my auto.media file contains: cdrecorder -fstype=auto,ro,user,exec :/dev/cdrecorder dvd -fstype=auto,ro,user,exec :/dev/dvd zip -fstype=auto,user :/dev/hdg4 I took the options for the Zip drive from the fstab file generated by the installation. It automounts file when I enter the directory, it just won't let me write to it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Vincent

Is it mounted read-only, or do you get "Permission Denied" when you try to write to the disk? -Michael
The exact message I get when trying to create a new directory (with the default name of Directory) on the media is: "Access denied to /media/zip/Directory" As far as I know the disk itself is not write protected. Vince On Monday, June 16, 2003, at 03:35 PM, Michael George wrote:

Ok, I checked and the disk itself is not protected. I also changed my auto.media file to just -fstype=auto,rw for the Zip drive and still nothing. I get the same error as listed below. If anyone has any more ideas I'd really like to get this working. If anyone who's using autofs on SuSE could send me the text of their auto.* files (specifically the floppy line or any other writable removable media) I'd appreciate it. Okay, I'm making some progress. I set a umask=0002 and I am now able to create a directory on the zip drive. However, if I create a file with KDE (for example, right clicking in the Zip window and choosing new -> text file) it creates the text file but then gives me an error saying "Could not change permissions for /media/zip/Text File". I'm now convinced this is all just a matter of setting the correct umask. The problem now being that I don't know what the correct umask would be that would actually allow me to change permissions of items on the Zip drive. If anyone who is more familiar with umask could help from here I'd appreciate in. I've looked in my books and I'm digging through Google results right now but I'm not finding any useful information. It actually appears that most people are using the umask=0002 line for their zip drives. Thanks, Vince

From my /etc/auto.master: /mount /etc/auto.mount --timeout 4
From my /etc/auto.mount: zip -fstype=auto :/dev/hdb4 maczip -fstype=hfs :/dev/sda
ls -ld of /mount: drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 0 2003-06-12 16:40 /mount ls -ld of /mount/zip: drwxr-xr-x 10 george george 1024 2003-06-17 08:30 /mount/zip I don't know if any of this helps or not...
