Hi. I'm having SuSE 8.2 on this computer, and also WindowsXP. I want to reinstall the XP. I have tried to work with Kpilot, but it seems less intuitive and rather limited in its functionality compared to jpilot. Hi all, Can you guys give me insight to this gentleman's email? Seems RH can't cut the mustard, so they are looking for alternatives. I am not sure if SuSE can fit the bill either, but believe they can. I am including his information from his emails, as he is not a list member. If anyone has any info to offer him, please respond directly to him or me. Also, if contacting SuSE directly would help in resolving their concerns/problems, pass along that info. Thanks for you help. Eric Singer's first mail: Hi everyone, It's been a while since I posted or been to any meetings, but I plan on changing all of that soon. The company I work for is considering the purchase of a two node Linux cluster with share storage between the two nodes. The objective of this is two fold. The first is to prove the Linux will work well in our environment for our next generation of server purchases. We're currently running Sun servers with Solaris 8. The second is for us to move off two Oracle database instances to this two node cluster to give us a little breathing room on our Sun cluster. We've been looking very heavily at the Redhat Enterprise Server distribution. It looks like has all the support and stability that we need for a production environment, however we had a nasty wakeup call that has somewhat derailed our purchase proposal. We spoke with another company that has already purchased the same hardware and software that we're considering and although Redhat Linux itself is very stable, their having a nightmare of a time with the clustering software that in the Redhat distribution. They've reported to us that for no apparent reason, the cluster software decides to perform a failover from the primary node to the secondary node. They have Redhat support involved with their problem, but there's no resolution as of yet. Their combination of software is different than what we'd be running on our cluster, so we're not sure whether we can trust this information or not. Does any one out there have any experience with failover clustering in Linux? If so what are you running as far as clustering software and application software? I run SuSE at home myself, so I do lean towards them as well. My manager uses Redhat and he leans their way, however if SuSE has better failover clustering software than Redhat then that might push him over to SuSE's side. My manager's rational for looking at Redhat is the following: 1) It has a bigger market share in Linux. 2) He believes their 24x7 support would be based the US (as opposed to some companies that I've dealt with that have after hours support in India or Asia, the language barrier can be quite a challenge). 3) Redhat is North Carolina based, so we could drive down the road if we ever need to see them in person. I'm okay with you posting to the SuSE list. Just explain to them that we're looking at purchasing a two node cluster with shared storage between the two nodes (more than likely a Dell solution). The application that we'll be running will be Oracle 9i. We're not interested in Oracle RAC. If you took a look at the pricing for Oracle Real Application Cluster you'd know why, list price would be $240,000.00 for this small cluster. So to give us High Availability we're looking a failover cluster where one node is actively running Oracle and the other is ready to take on Oracle if the first node fails. Thanks! Philips DVDRW228 : kernel: I/O error

Hello, I've been reading faq's, downloading tools, compiling ... but it still doesn't work :-( . This is the problem : I'm trying to mount a DVD so I can copy the vob files on my portable which does not have a dvd-rom drive. When I mount it, autofs uses the udf filesystem. All files are readable except the main movie files. They produce an I/O error. Strangly enough, mplayer can play the dvd normally ( I reinstalled mplayer with css decryption support ). I tried to dd the disk directly to my portable, but this breaks the movie ( garbeled image and bad sound ). Once the kernel has had an io error, the drive stays blocked ( even the files I could read are now unreadable ), until I open en close the tray. I upgraded to suse 8.2 and upgraded the firmware of my drive to 1.51 to be sure. I tried with several disks, even with really old ones ( to check if there was a copy protection of some sort on there ). Since mplayer can play the disk , I suspect there's something wrong in the udf fs, since mplayer uses its own udf driver ( quote the mplayer homepage ). Does anybody know of anything I could try ? Samba 2.2.7a - add user script only worked the first time

I have WinXP machines loging into a samba domain. I am using this add user script: add user script = useradd -d /dev/null -g 300 -s /bin/false -M %u This worked beautifully with the first WinXP machine I set up. I immediately booted up a second machine and got the "Access Denied" error. I have tried two more computers since and keep getting the same thing but the first machine still logs in and out fine. The samba.log keeps saying that the user does not exist on the domain. All of my WinXP machines were ghosted from the same image so I don't believe the problem is on that side. Hello, I'm running into problems making copies of my 8.1 disk set. It's funny as I've burned Debian disks before and cdrecord wasn't an issue. Now though my burner is having issues with something. Yast can't find CD

YAST needs help finding my cd-rom drive. Originally my cd-rom drive was at "hdc" (master on secondary IDE). I recently installed an additional hard drive as master on the secondary IDE (hdc) and moved the cd-rom drive to slave (hdd). Now, when I install software using YAST I get an error that it can't access the cd-rom. When I display the error details it indicates that YAST is looking at "hdc" for the cd-rom. The error-details dialog allows me to enter "hdd" and it then allows me to proceed with the install. How do I inform YAST that my cd-rom is now at "hdd". By the way, my desktop CD-ROM link works fine. Thanks, Matt

Canoscan LiDE 30 on SuSE-8.1

Hello, Simple problem: Canoscan LiDE is newly supported by Sane ==> can only install drivers with latest tarball from Sane. 1) in april: Laptop Toshiba 4000CDS SuSE-7.3 Sane_backends tarball Xsane from SuSE-7.3 package Click-click ==> it works 2) now Same Laptop SuSE-8.1 latest sane_backends and sane_frontends tarballs Xsane from SuSE-8.1 package Same /usr/local/etc/sane.d/plustek.conf Click-click ==> scanimage -L ==> no scanner were identified. Usb port is OK because the USB HD are working. HP Usb ScanJet 6200C that is well recognised (and works) on a laptop with SuSE-7.3 is not recognised on the Toshiba laptop (with same config of etc/sane.d/hp.conf). The difference was: SuSE-7.3 ==> SuSE-8.1 Sane tarball of april ==> latest Sane tarball # ls-l /dev/usbscanner ==> permissions 666 OK # /cat/proc/bus/usb/drivers usbdevfs hub 48-63: usbscanner # /cat/proc/bus/usb/devices: Canoscan well recognised (and worked in april) sane-find-scanner finds the scanner on /dev/usbscanner or /dev/usb/scanner0 Normally the sane files are well installed in /usr/local For information, Canoscan LiDE 30 was installed in 15 minutes on Windows XP (beek). Thus my choice is: reinstall SuSE-7.3 use Windows XP Thanks for any suggestion. Static version of Synaptic?

Anyone had success building a static version of synaptic? I am going to try to build one today. Last time I tried, the autoconf stuff was always changing my gcc flags to non static... I don't have the details in front of me or I would be more specific. Anyway, if someone has done this, let me know.
