Hello, Simple problem: Canoscan LiDE is newly supported by Sane ==> can only install drivers with latest tarball from Sane. 1) in april: Laptop Toshiba 4000CDS SuSE-7.3 Sane_backends tarball Xsane from SuSE-7.3 package Click-click ==> it works 2) now Same Laptop SuSE-8.1 latest sane_backends and sane_frontends tarballs Xsane from SuSE-8.1 package Same /usr/local/etc/sane.d/plustek.conf Click-click ==> scanimage -L ==> no scanner were identified. Usb port is OK because the USB HD are working. HP Usb ScanJet 6200C that is well recognised (and works) on a laptop with SuSE-7.3 is not recognised on the Toshiba laptop (with same config of etc/sane.d/hp.conf). The difference was: SuSE-7.3 ==> SuSE-8.1 Sane tarball of april ==> latest Sane tarball # ls-l /dev/usbscanner ==> permissions 666 OK # /cat/proc/bus/usb/drivers usbdevfs hub 48-63: usbscanner # /cat/proc/bus/usb/devices: Canoscan well recognised (and worked in april) sane-find-scanner finds the scanner on /dev/usbscanner or /dev/usb/scanner0 Normally the sane files are well installed in /usr/local For information, Canoscan LiDE 30 was installed in 15 minutes on Windows XP (beek). Thus my choice is: reinstall SuSE-7.3 use Windows XP Thanks for any suggestion. Everytime I install a scanner it takes a few days but as it worked immediately in april I did not expect this. -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631

Other option - upgrade to 8.2. Not ideal, possibly (but better than WinXP!). My LiDE30 worked out of the box with 8.2 - just plugged it in and configured scanners through YaST. Detected as Lide30, driver installed and no problems thereafter :-) John -- John Pettigrew Headstrong Games john@headstrong-games.co.uk Fun : Strategy : Price http://www.headstrong-games.co.uk/ Board games that won't break the bank Knossos: escape the ever-changing labyrinth before the Minotaur catches you!
Solved
1) Put Sane-backends-1.0.12 in the trash-can
2) Download and install Sane-backends-1.0.10 (that worked in march
with SuSE-7.3) and Sane-frontends-1.0.10
3) Only problem: xsane: the tarball xsane did not work. I installed
the SuSE-8.1 xsane package and it took me 1/2h to convince YaST2 that
I did not want its outdated 1.0.8 Sane version but only xsane.
It works now.

Most strange. As I said, I merely plugged the scanner in and it worked. My system has sane 1.0.10-36 and xsane 0.90-44, as on the 8.2 DVDs. I have no trace of packages called "Sane-backends" or "Sane-frontends", only "sane", "xsane" and "yast2-scanner". sane-backends-1.0.10.tar.gz and sane-frontends-1.0.10.tar.gz are the tarballs dating back to february 2003 you can find in http://www.mostang.com/sane and which were probably used to make the SuSE-8.2 Sane package. The last 1.0.12 Sane version seems to have a problem with Canoscan LiDE30 (buggy driver?). The Sane tarballs are very easy to install.
