vftpd problem

Hi-- I'm trying to set up the vsftpd daemon. If I only allow anonymous logins, I get the following error message: 500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writable anonymous root If I allow local logins, this is what I get: 500 OOPS: cannot open chroot() user list file Can someone tell me how to get around either of these problems? Scanner permissions

I have an HP 6200C scanner. I set it up with Yast, and edited the /etc/sane.d/hp.conf file so that it could be used with USB. I have two questions: 1) The aforementioned config file says I only need to uncomment those lines if I'm NOT using usblib, but I can't find any info on what that is. What is it? 2) It works as root, but I can't get access to that scanner as a regular user. I've checked to see that the devices are all in /etc/logindevperm, but there must be a device that's not in there that I need. Does anyone know what that might be? Thanks, dk

Network is Unreachable

I am putting 8.2 on a Micron laptop. suse recognizes and sets up both a pcmcia 3com 575 and Sanyo in the docking station. Neither will connect to the network. With ifconfig, I see that each in its own turn has an inet6 addr and HW address listed. There is not an inet addr for either. What am I missing? 8.2 Pro freezing solid

Hi all, I need some assistance with my brand new 8.2 Pro system. Until a few days ago I ran 8.1 Pro and was happy. Then 8.2 came out, and for some reason I decided I wanted to upgrade. I did a clean install of 8.2 Pro and everything looked ok. But after a few hours my system was hung/frozen. I restarted it and let it run overnight with no apps running. Hung again. Looked in log files and can see nothing special. The last thing I see is in /var/messages where it's a MARK entry from cron. But nothing in the other files. And by freezing I mean solid. Nothing short of a PWR Reset will make it move again. Nothing has changed since 8.1 hardwarewise, I have: AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz 640 MB RAM 40 GB Samsung HD Asus DVD-ROM Plextor CD burner ATI Radeon 8500 Soundblaster Live 5.1 Intel Express NIC 10/100 I've tried both with and without ReiserFS, ext3, acpi, apm, dma. A couple of reinstalls to make sure everything is proper. I'm currently running with ext3 and all the "fancy" options off and vga=normal. Athlon kernel and the CPU temp is 40-50C. Looking in Google and this list archive I don't find any really good ideas as to solving my problem that I haven't tried. Any suggestions as to what else I can try before either going back to 8.1 or turning it all into ext2 ? (How long would a fs check take for 40GB on ext2?) Anyway, it's a lesson learned to not upgrade just because there is something newer available :-) thanks in advance, Anders

lilo, SuSE 8.2

I got the following error, when trying to update lilo to 22.5.1. After /sbin/lilo run: Fatal: /boot/message is too big (>65535 bytes) Yes, "message" file is 142091 bytes, but all were OK with previous lilo version (when I just installed SuSE). Can I just ignore this error?

[SLE] Radeon 9000 under 8.2

I just replaced my old video card with a Radeon 9000(not a pro). But I'm having some trouble setting it up for 3D. It seems to work, but something isn't quite right. On gears I get 320 fps full screen(2100 small screen), compared to 100 with 3d off. But on tux racer i get this odd rolling wave where the tracks should be. SAX recognizes it as a ATI rv250 lf, is this the right choice for this card? It uses the radeon driver, but from my search through the archives I thought it would be the ati driver. Any help in getting this to work would be greatly appreciated. I checked the ati site and the only drivers were for XFree 4.1 and 4.2. I assume it would be a bad idea to install these on 8.2, or would this be fine? TIA

X remote

I have two SuSE-8.2 boxes, machine-1.host and machine-2.host, and I'd like to use KDE on machine-2 from machine-1. Hence I've configured machine-2 such that it exports X, by setting DISPLAYMANAGER_REMOTE_ACCESS="yes" and I've opened all SuSEfirewall ports to machine-1 on the machine-2 host by setting FW_TRUSTED_NETS="IP of machine-1" Now, what should I write in machine-1:/etc/inittab for a remote X session to machine-2 to start on tty8 when entering runlevel 5? Or can it be setup in some other fashion? I suppose SuSEconfig will overwrite /etc/inittab anyway? Thanks in advance -- Ch

Cups causing server to dial

I have a machine acting as a dial up internet gateway and as a print server using cups. All is goo but, when I call up the app kprinter, it causes my gateway to dial. It finds my printer correctly so that is no issue there. I'm not running any DNS on my home network. I use the /etc/hosts file for name resolution. All machines on the network are in the hosts file. The /etc/nsswitch file is set up to look at files then dns. On the cups server, I have browsing on and set to the 2 client addresses that are on the LAN. Is there anything that I have missed that could be causing this? I did do a quick google search but found nothing helpful. The clients are SuSE 8.2 and the server is SuSE 8.1. email list management

Does any one have any GOOD resources for email list management? I'm talking about letting dept. managers maintain their own lists so a package like majordomo WILL NOT work. Thanks in advance, Ken
