Asus A7N8X onboard NICs and 8.2

I know I must be missing something. For a fairly long term Linux user, I'm getting deeply frustrated. I bought this board thinking it had all of the cool features I needed, it does - but apparently it sucks for Linux. I've installed 8.2 and most everything is cool, except for the NICS, which I absolutely can not get running. Of course, I have downloaded the ASUS/Nvidia Linux drivers (suse 8.1, I believe) and installed them (rpm) - no go. Next, the src rpm, wouldn't build, tons of complaints. So, I'm stuck. I've never recompiled a kernel (so maybe I am a newbie, but never had to).. has anyone managed to get this mobo to run on 8.2 with at least one of the two nics (asus nvidia or the 3com). If it is simple, I've screwed up somewhere, if it is complex (i.e. kernel rebuild), I wouldn't know how to do it - so please tailor your response for me (please!). This is my home machine for remote working, and the longer it takes to get the a nic running, the more I sit in the damn office. error in sendmail standard config?

Hi I recently changed our mailserver from an old sendmail installation (SuSE 6.3 and sendmail 8.9.3) to SuSE 8.1 with sendmail 8.12.6 (with latest security-patch form SuSE of course). After that change I realized _a lot_ of entries in the mail log with "[SENDER-IP] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA" This alone would be no problem, since we know all that there are a lot of people out there probing mailservers or using strange MTAs for sending spam. _But_ from two of these sender MTAs I got complaints about being not reachable for them to send normal mail to our users! They also sent me an extract of their maillog, which looked (in both cases) like this: [senders log extract] Attempting SMTP connection to [MY-SERVERS-IP : 25] Waiting for socket connection... Socket connection established Waiting for protocol initiation... 30 second wait for protocol timeout exceeded. [/senders log extract] It looked like they have a connection timeout of 30s - and it seems that this timeout was coming from my server :-( (Funny, that both complaints came apparently from the same sort of MTA, probably MDaemon). Checking some RFCs about recommended timeouts gave me a vague information like '5 min would be nice'. But the RFC was from 1989... and to be honest, 5 minutes would be nice in 1989 but isn't it a little bit long for today? After searching the sendmail docu for the "did not issue..." error, I found a hint in the "enhdnsbl"-section of "cf/README" of sendmail version 8.12.9 (the special hint is not in the README of prior versions...): [hint] Set the EDNSBL_TO mc option to change the DNS retry count from the default value of 5, this can be very useful when a DNS server is not responding, which in turn may cause clients to time out (an entry stating did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN will be logged). [/hint] I'm not sure if taking this value from 5 to 1 really helped and I also tried to tweak the "confTO_RESOLVER_RETRANS" and "confTO_RESOLVER_RETRY" until I realized that the DNSRBL, which is activated in a standard SuSE setup (in /etc/sysconfig/sendmail, SENMAIL_DNSRBL), is "relays.orbl.org". Trying to do a manual nslookup on that list timed out after 10s!! Counting the standard values for resolving names together gave me: first try 10s + timout 5s + second try 10s + timeout 5s (and so on, until 4 retries are done) more than 60s! I assume, that this was the reason for at least _many_ of the "did not issue MAIL..." error-messages. [thank you for reading until here ;-) ] Now my question is: Am I right, with assuming that the "did not issue..." errors came from a lookup timeout? If so, shouldn't SuSE take the "relays.orbl.org" out of the default config, if it is unreachable anyway? Or did I completely miss something in my investigations? It _seems_ at least, after replacing "relays.orbl.org" with "list.dsbl.org" that the "did not issue..." error appears much fewer (but it's weekend now and therefore less traffic anyway). Better question in my opinion: Since SuSE 8.2 seems to fully support ACLs and Samba uses them, what backup solutions handle ACLs. My answer: The only ones I know of are star and xfsdump/xfsrestore. I think both are on the CDs. I hope others can extend my list, but I time I check one, I get a negative. Or not untill the 2.6 kernel is released. I think the real problem is that RH does not support ACLs in any way shape or form to my knowledge. --- star is targeted at ext3, but I assume works with all FSes. xfsdump/xfsrestore requires the data be on a XFS fs, but it is a commercial grade fs dump with lots of bells and whistles. --- If you need data-center like functionality where you have a single backup-server and multiple SuSE nodes to backup, then Amanda can be layered on top of xfsdump as a backup manager. I don't know if it can also manage star, but I assume so. I have never used amanda, but it is highly recommended on the xfs mailing list. HTH Greg -- Greg Freemyer

Galeon scrollbar?

Has anyone else noticed that Galeon's side scrollbar doesn't pay attention to your chosen Gnome theme in 8.2? I use KDE as my desktop environment, but all the other gtk apps behave as expected. [SLE] Yast2 problem

Mike, I have solved the problem! This is what i did... I update (reinstall) some files from the cd with Yast, these files are for Yast2. I use apt-get and synaptic to, there i found these files, the are all for yast. Here a list off theme; yast2 yast2 controle-center glibc mesasoft xfree86-libs expat freetype2 libgcc libpng qt3 libstdc++ zlib bash perl ncurses Hope it works for you to. Let me now. SuSE 8.2 w/usb keyboard

Have a Dell Inspiron laptop and install SuSE 8.2, fresh install. The USB keyboard I have pluged in now longer works. It worked in 8.0 and 8.1. Any suggestions on how to fix it? (It does work in GRUB at bootup, but after that, nothing) Art

SuSE 8.2 file associations

When I try to open an attachment, a .doc file, in Eveolution 1.2.2, all I can do is save it to disk. I set the file associations in the KDE control panel for OOo Writer, but it still does not work. This worked in 8.0 and 8.1.. If I click on a .doc file with Konqueror, it opens on OOo. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this to work with Evolution? Art
