avoid boot from CD and floppy

dear all, Days before I've got my root's passwd changed by a friend. He told me that he booted from floppy which contain small linux distro, then "linux rescue" my system. Out of the list though.. but could not figure out to whom to send this to.. so the group would be ideal I hope.. Hi, I was wondering why does not Suse strip the @ sign from our email-IDs before making it available to all search engines.. wu-ftp does it like myname _at_ mydomain dot com I have already started receiving spam because of this.. as some of the smart spammers are now using email archives to spam people around.. It should since the real issue was 2.0.9 -> 2.1.0. I ended up documenting this last night after I ran into someone on IRC having a problem compiling Gaim 0.62 on SuSE 8.1 and walked him through it. I figured if it was effecting him and I, plus the Pan user with the problem, Bluefish users, etc. (see Google), I should post my resolution in a couple of areas and get the solution in a couple of mail archives at least. What I don't understand is why SuSE/RedHat/etc wouldn't release new pango-1.0.5 packages compiled against the newer freetype2-2.1.3, which ships with their products. Very strange. Stranger still is that I only had the problem on one of my two SuSE 8.1 boxes. Not sure why the other one was fine, but it was. Good luck! Since my 8.1 install went south with the respawn problem i decided to just reinstall from scratch an load 8.2 on that machine. I'm going to drop in a new harddrive. Is there a way after getting 8.2 up an running that I can put in the old harddrive an then mount it an copy some things off of it over to new install. thanks. jack

Postgresql difficulties

I have installed 8.2 pro on 2 machines, one using the default installation and another having just the minimum install (it is going to be a DB server so I don't need the GUI part). On both machines I have installed postgresql (server and client) and accepted all additional packages YAST2 recommended. On the machine with the default installation, I have no problem starting postgresql. On the machine with the minimal install postgresql will not start displaying the following error in /var/log/postgresql: Failed to initialize lc_messages to '' FATAL: invalid value for option 'LC_MESSAGES': 'en_US' My guess is that the postgresql RPMs may be missing a dependency, but I am not sure how to find out which one it is. 8.0,8.1, and 8.2 nvidia/PNY cards

Since 8.0, when installing, and having a PNY video card with nvidia ti4400 vidio chipset I have to use the non-graphical mode of the installation. It seems that the offered rezolution/freq rates don't agree with this card. Anyone else had this problem and maybe know of a solution. I'm getting tired of putting in my old TNT card just to install in graphical mode. Thanks Mark

setting up linux on a (IBM 390) laptop

Corel draw in sodipodi

Hello, I found the 'sodipodi' vector drawing program, it is really nice, but i would like read (and modify) a corel draw file (*.cdr) in it. cups server access

I made cups working as a server, but I think not in the way it should. At the moment I assign each allowed client to the <Location /> and <Location /admin>, but that actually controls access to the related directories. It is not handy as well as all clients may now change the printer definitions and each client must be assigned individually. What "tag" arranges which clients may access the cups server.
